There was this old game called Riders of Rohan. It was a game that was more cool than really "worked", but it reminded me a bit of Freedom in the Galaxy. You have your characters, like Aragorn and Theoden, and you use them to help recruit and lead the armies, but they don't directly fight.

At some point, you have to go blow to blow with Saruman's forces, maybe with a little help from the Ents, but you're going to have to do most of the heavy lifting with your actual human soldiers, maybe with a bit of magic to help you out.

It was cool, but kind of low on replay value; your score at the end of the game was measured in how many leaders and soldiers you could send to Gondor's aid. Getting the full 6,000 and everyone who survived in the books is HARD.

But once you did that, the game had a low replay value.

Try a game with 8 black, infernal mastery, conjurer, and someone who can build cathedrals; I like halflings. (They build fast)

The ability to spit out death knights for a pittance a unit, and every city you've got able to pump out 30 mana a turn, and you will win the game. I can and have killed a 6th xp level Torin with Artifacts by piling up enough death knights and charging.

Although yeah, white is very powerful. Torin, Just Cause, Lionheart, Crusade, just about any of those spells can win on their own.

I feel a bit embarassed for admitting this, but I tend to pick Tauron's portrait.

If I pick Tauron, he won't be in the game. A super red guy casting Armageddon in 1406 is bad enough the first time; and risking it again scares me. So I try to make sure he doesn't come out.

Lords of Magic
Turn-based on world map like Heroes of Might and Magic series (but MUCH more complex), real time combat with active pause.
You choose a lord, if they die you loose. Can't recruit units until you liberate your great temple. Only one map that is an entire (not very big) planet. Great music. Pretty buggy.

Anyone ever play this while we're on the fantasy game kick?

It was a lot like Panzer General (which is really good too), but it's more maneuver and annihilate based, more dependant on terrain and the right unit for it. The lack of entrenchment makes combat a lot faster and more lethal.

They're both well worth playing.

So, in the interest of keeping this thread alive:

Lords of the Realm 2. What's your balance between cows and grain for your agricultural needs?

I usually play with advanced farming and armies eat on, and I've found I have trouble harvesting more than 1 field per 500 or so people, so I tend to do that, leave enough fields fallow to keep it on excellent fertility, and fill the rest with cows.

I've always meant to try a full grain economy, like what the Countess does, but been too scared to try.

Hide in buildings, and have lots of rangers. The warlocks can't see invisible units, and they don't have a lot of HP, a skirmish line of shooters will be able to kill the warlocks in one volley.

And the fireballs can't hurt buildings. So if they're planning on assassinating your clan leader, have him hide in your town center, with maybe a squire or a knight at the door to absorb fireballs.

IIRC, the Obblinox don't harvest resources, they just train out of a stockpile. Keep them off your back long enough, and you will win eventually. The hard part is that first five minutes while the roaming warlocks can hit your clan leader.

The one that really always gave me a hard time was the one immediately before that, where you had to deliver the tree to the Shama'li.

I don't know why, I usually do well on those no-base purely tactical missions, but for whatever reason, the Tha'Roon always gave me a hard time there.

And yeah, the last mission is definitely anti-climatic; I think they attack you like once, and with the magic of tree regrowth, you can literally wait for an infinitely large army if you want.

Yeah, as someone whose childhood pretty much revolved around WarCraft II, I have to say it's my favorite. I actually like the winter sprites for WarCraft II, though they don't really feel "WarCraft-y" to me.

I remember back around 1999 or 2000, I couldn't wait for WarCraft III to come out, but a while after buying it I really lost interest in it. Gameplay-wise, the upkeep system and RPG elements really made it feel half-assed, and the combat felt a lot less visceral than the previous games (the units seemed to feel really underpowered).

I also hate the art style of the later games, and all the retcons and additions to the lore (pandarens my ass). Even if the WarCraft universe was always a derivative fantasy world, I appreciated the grimdark, mysterious feelings the first game evoked and the series lost as time went on. I suppose it's pretty inevitable as technology advances, since for me 3D games never seem to get your imagination working the way 2D ones do.

Dune on PC/DOS (tryed it now when I'm 15 years older and I thought it SUCKED)

XCOM and UFO on PC/DOS.

Warlords (Amiga), loved it. Still do just because it does not contain very much building/maintanence elements. It's very simple and fast and pretty straight forward. The "modern" remake Warlords IV on PC was epic, played the shit out of that one.
