I think the contemporary CUHRAYZEE/DMC-style game has a large emphasis on combos and developing a fighting style.

Stylistically, the CUHRAYREE/DMC-style seems like a descendant of the beat-em-up. Beat-em-ups seem somewhat similar to fighting games mixed with a platformer, but without the jump or obstacle hazards that defines a platformer (Compare Mario or Ninja Gaiden to Streets of Rage, for example).

In other words, beat-em-ups tended towards combating incoming hordes of enemies, echoed in DMC's formula. I think Dynasty Warriors is a good example of a modern beat-em-up (probably because I'm a fanboy of the series): 1-2 players versus an entire army in a series of relatively open levels. DMC remains the best example of hack-n-slash/CUHRAZREE/third-person combo-oriented combat game, although I've heard that God Hand is another defining game in the genre.

I remember sections of DMC where you had to jump over things and the game is almost entirely about avoiding obstacles

>> No.1151658

>>1151654

I've played more fighting games, which I think bears more similarity between with the beat-em-up than a platformer.

I'm not sure, for example, if classic Ninja Gaiden is more platformer of beat-em-up. It doesn't seem like a beat-em-up, it looks like it plays more like a platformer. The goal is to kill a boss, however, but I don't know how combo-intensive the game was.

In other words, the categories of what DMC is and whether or not any retro games can fit into those categories is not that clear. I found most similarity between DMC and fighting games due to it's emphasis on stringing together attacks, I don't know if any /vr/ games are like that.

>> No.1151660

>>1151656
You do avoid enemy attacks, primarily via dodging. Most of the game seems to be more about combat rather than platforming, however.

In Mario or Sonic, to defeat the final boss you have to traverse an entire level. That's the primary obstacle. In DMC, the primary obstacle seems to be traversing a level and clearing rooms of enemies before engaging in a boss fight.

I think a lot of shmups and beat em ups would qualify. Especially those games that took the established formula and then took it one step further.

I think the Alien vs Predator arcade game is a pretty good example.

Rise of the Triad- the first game to have God mode (hurl fireballs!), Dog mode (be a DOG) and shrooms mode (trip out). Pick two, then arm yourself with drunken missiles, then turn on the "Fish barrel polka" for your level music via the jukebox. Bounce on trampolines while making things go BOOM.

As weird as it may sound Magical Pop'n might be my favorite game. It just mixes all the elements of other vidya I like such as the sidescrolling sword combat from Zelda 2/Actraiser, the exploration and branching paths of a lesser Metroid, the cool stages and bosses of megaman, the cute little girl I wish to be. It's really awesome. Wish there were more games like it.

there is no such thing as curhazyee.

it was a marketing stunt capcom did with its devil may cry games by calling it a 'stylish action game' which the fanboys endlessly repeated.

if you are talking about the beat em up genre (the thing that devil may cry is) than you could probably just go to google or hardcore gaming 101 and find a list.

nothing

you can do impressive in combos in beat em ups and they are much better paced than any dmc game (you wont be running through empty corridors to fetch puzzle items or doing crappy platforming)

3d beat em ups and 2d beat em ups differ mostly in that the 3d ones have a dodge butten that greatly dumbs down the combat. in 2d beat em ups enemy ai manipulation, crowd control managment, proper combo use, and aggressive player isn't something you do just to make the ranking give you an S. Its required in order to actually get past the 3rd stage.

dynasty warriors and and dmc are the exact same genre

ALL beat em ups are combo orinated, combos are how you fucking kill things.

DMC didn't start the 3d beat em up genre, games like that existed on the ps1.

Ninja gaiden is not a beat em up, its a platformer.

I remember an IGN review of Devil May Cry that I printed off in the public library to read before buying. It said DMC harkened back to "old school" action games.

The genre you're thinking of OP are 2D action games. The stuff with the ninjas. Fast paced action.

Ninja Gaiden
Hagane

Stuff like that. DMC tried to translate those 2D weapon based action games into 3D. It also took a lot of resident evil.

Beat'em up is a video game genre. "Cuhrayzee" is a /vg/ meme that originates from threads about Hideki Kamiya games, later Clover/Platinum games, later all similarly styled action games. The word comes from a DMC3 opening cutscene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HHkJH_0leU).).
