I've been calling it the Duke for almost as long as I remember the Xbox existing. It's a nickname that got picked up pretty quick once the Controller S came out like >>11501818 said.

It was unofficially called the Duke because that was the name of the designers son. Originally everyone just called it the "fatty" which I personally remember being the common name for it during the early 2000's while the Duke name seemed to get more common after the 360 came out.

31 here and late to the xbox's launch though i still got it in its generation, the Duke basically became the term as soon as the smaller controller became the standard, sort of a status thing about its "absurdly big" size. I remember watching TechTV/G4 and the Duke was being used there too.

We call it Dreamcast 2 because it replaced Sega in the console war against Sony and Nintendo, because it had a marketing very much alike Sega did 10 years prior, and because it had the most Sega originals of the generation. If Sega could afford to, the Xbox is exactly the type of console they would have released.

It also had the internet connectivity that the Dreamcast pioneered, and prior to that, they tried before with the Saturn Netlink, and even further prior the Sega Channel. Plus the Dreamcast had that huge Windows CE logo on its side, and they were in talks with Microsoft with making the Xbox compatible with the Dreamcast (which fell through because it would have made the console cost too much).

>>11504130
Sonic is for children, so it got pushed for the Nintendo consoles along with Billy Hatcher and Monkey Ball. Virtua Fighter 4 and Sakura Taisen was pushed for the PS2 because those games are only popular in Japan and Xbox didn't sell at all in Japan. Nearly every other major Sega title was for the Xbox, including some which got ported directly from the Dreamcast (Shenmue 2, Rent-a-Hero, Toejam & Earl 3) or were sequels to DC games (Crazy Taxi III, Jet Set Radio Future).

Xbox was the Dreamcast 2, no matter what you dumb zoomers say.

>> No.11506323

>>11501815
I never had an XBox, but I remember that nickname going around plenty online in the late 2000s or early 2010s or so, long before zoomers were online in any appreciable capacity.

>>11502386
Well there you go, the name was going around before most zoomers were even born.

>It also had the internet connectivity that the Dreamcast pioneered, and prior to that, they tried before with the Saturn Netlink, and even further prior the Sega Channel.
Sega wasn't even first with internet connectivity on consolss, Nintendo did a moden with the Famicom, which didn't sell all that well, and before Famicom even there were some attempts at online console shit by companies like Coleco, which didn't do much better (the technology wasn't really there by then).

The first console online which worked out well (very relatively speaking) is probably the X-Band modems, which were around for a few years. Sega would however dramatically outdo X-Band with the Dreamcast's own online.
