While it is true that the RGB lights on the console nooks looks kinda gay, having lights on top of your consoles is not a bad idea. I'd use a warmer amber-ish light instead of making it look like an 80's miami coke den.
If you're going full retro with no HDMI you'll probably want a Scart switcher reachable next to the TV. My setup is vertical on the left of the TV but they're CD based consoles on their side. If you use top-loader cartridge consoles keep in mind you'll need space above them to comfortable put in and take out carts, plus the nook to the side where to rest the controller.
You might also want to make like Sakurai and have an opaque cabinet door to hide the consoles when not in use. Good for dust, great for judgemental cunts.

The key to good gaming decoration is to not make the gaming consoles the center focus. They shouldn't be on display in big cubby holes. You are not running a museum. They should be hidden behind doors and only opened when needed. OR minimized as much as possible. Make something else stand out more than the consoles. Like the TV or speakers.

Why you ask? Because even if YOU like the design of plastic consoles, most people do not. Many think it's plastic clutter that stands out. It's why gaming consoles have struggled for decades to look modern and fit in (and usually failing).

Lastly, do not get ultra tall shelves that almost reach the ceiling and out them next to your TV. Tall shelves make the room feel smaller and suffocating. Like you are in a jail cell or stuffy library. Medium sized shelves only. The shelves should not be taller than you.

And for goodness sake, get some freaking plants or flowers! Even one plant helps. Greenery and trees helps tremendously to make people feel better. There are actually scientific studies on this that prove it.

Personally, I don't even have a "set-up" per se. Whenever I want to play a game, I take the respective console out of a drawer, place it on the filing cabinet next to my desk, move my PC monitor and keyboard out of the way, place a small CRT atop my desk, plug everything in, and just play games at my desk. It only takes about 3 minutes to set up each time, its space efficient, and it keeps equipment out of the sunlight which slows down yellowing. I find sitting in an office chair far more conducive to gaming than a couch, especially if that couch is across the room from the TV.

Best one so far. I'd elevate the TV a bit for comfort and put a chair in front of it, and also put that brown pizza in the dumpster before its odor of greasy cinders spreads through too much of my living space, but the game setup is just what it ought to be. 1 TV 1 console no extra crap all about. The game you want to play is running, the games you aren't playing are in the closet waiting like civilized appliances.

The key to a good looking setup is not filling it with shitty zoomer consoles. Picrel and a 14-20" PVM is literally all you need. Maybe a SNES and Dreamcast if you must.

I do need to clean up, got 3 kids and they are a mess. As far as the chair goes the room isn't that big, it's not as close as it seems but what's nice is it's centered to both the flat screen and CRT from the 1 pivot point
