Alright /vr/, I just got gifted a PC Engine Duo, and I'm ready to dive into the library. Never owned one before, but I’ve been told it’s a goldmine for hidden gems and killer exclusives. I’ve got a couple grand set aside for games, so price isn’t an issue. Hit me with your best recommendations for HuCards and CD games.

Already eyeing stuff like Rondo of Blood (duh) and Bonk’s Adventure, but what else is worth tracking down? I’m down for anything; platformers, shmups, RPGs, weird Japan-only obscurities, whatever. Bonus points if you can recommend something with killer music.

Buy repros, not originals. If you source them from the right outfits, they're identical. RetroGrafX-16 is where I get my Turbo CD repros. Future Shop on Aliexpress is where I get my HuCards. Steer clear of Nightwing Games, I ordered 2 CD games from them, quality was not good.

If you're willing to play the games in Japanese, the Momotarou Densetsu trilogy are great DQ clones. Turbo is an enhanced port of the original Famicom game, it's a little rough because it's like DQ1 with only 1vs1 fights (with animal helpers occasionally helping out in battle), but it's an improvement over the original. 2 and Gaiden (which takes place after 2) are where it's at though.

great system if you like these devs/pubs
>hudson
>irem
>compile
>falcom
>namco
>taito
>ncs/masaya
>telenet (lot of B-tier/C-tier stuff, they published 50 fucking games. only one wolfteam game though, they put their games on genesis)

naxat published a ton of games, including compile stuff and all the technos games

there is some good konami/capcom stuff but not a lot. you barely have 10 konami games

theres maybe like 20 capcom games, a large majority are licensed ports. sonson ii is the only true capcom exclusive, its a spiritual sequel to black tiger, though capcom had involvement with the sound on both side arms ports

you also have a lot of interesting sega ports including some westone games, some of which are better than the genesis (or master system) versions. they vary in quality. the best ports are bonanza bros, gain ground, monster lair, wbiii dragon trap, and after burner ii

the only exclusive sega games are power drift, riot zone (westone) and space fantasy zone (an aborted prototype developed by nec avenue, its fantasy zone with space harrier's gameplay)
