Lets talk about games the missed the mark. Games that while fun had the one blaring flaw that ultimately tarnished the game and kept it from being an extremely popular classic.

First up Beyond Oasis. Good game, amazing concept. Mix adventure, rpg, and side scrolling beat'em up elements to make a fast paced action adventure. The only problem is beat'em ups are meant to either be played by hardcore solo gamers or be a multiplayer experience. This game is single player only, meaning the waves and waves of enemies between bosses(that respawn everytime you change screen) are actually harder than the bosses themselves.

Cool concept, not the greatest use of implementing mechanics, but over all good fun game

Contra Hard Corps. Great graphics and gameplay. Unfortunately, the levels are shorter than your dick and the bosses, due to their simplistic attack patterns, aren't much fun to fight. There's also many dialog sequences that interrupt the flow of play way too often.

W-Ring: The Double rings on the PC-Engine. While it's a well-made and fun shoot 'em overall, the weapons are not well-balanced AT ALL. Although you have 5 different weapon types, 2 of them are utterly useless (green ripple and red option), and one of them is so ridiculously overpowered (blue laser) that it ends up destroying bosses in literally 2-3 seconds.
The worst example is the final boss: with the blue laser, it goes down in 3 seconds; with any other weapon, you'll end up loosing all your lives in ~15 seconds before you can destroy it because of its sheer firepower (which also happens to be INVISIBLE because of all the sprite flicker), and because the boss uses a shield that blocks all of your weapons (EXCEPT the blue laser!)

There are a few other issues with W-Ring as well. The "Beginner" and "Normal" difficulties are way to easy, while "Expert" is VERY difficult. Not to mention that the enemy bullets are tiny, tend to flicker at 30Hz, and are often THE SAME COLOR AS THE BACKGROUND.

Even so, W-Ring is still a fun little shmup, and it was made by the same team that would later create Coryoon and Air Zonk, both of which are very highly regarded cute 'em ups for the PC-Engine.

Now this is just bullshit.

Considering it's actually longer with multiple branching paths than Contra 3 (if you count speedruns that end at the secret boss, then it's not long), has unique characters with their own set of weapons, and some would argue it's better than Contra 3.

To me, the big flaw in Contra Hard Corps is that it has too much of a "scripted" feel. It's divided up into little chunks that each have their own logic that you have to learn, and there are no large free-form areas where you get to improvise more. The pacing of the game is a little painful because of stuff like this. It's great for what it is though, and it has a whole bunch of cool shit crammed into it.

Wiz'n'Liz would be fucking GODLY if the two-player mode had all the features of the one-player mode rather than being as basic as it is. As it is though, it's just a fun little trifle.

That's a really good observation but basically that describes most of the Contra games... or at least Alien Wars, as a comparison from the same generation.

I haven't gotten far in Alien Wars so I can't comment, but the first Contra on NES isn't like that at all.
