This is the best game on the SEGA Genesis. You might prefer another game and think that it’s better. But you are WRONG.

Just watch that insanely bad ass intro. Doesn’t it remind you of a time when martial arts and ninja were still seen as the coolest fucking thing ever? If watching that doesn’t make you want to come home from your karate classes, to eat a big mac and watch some Seagal and Van Damme flicks on your VHS, then you should probably check your pulse because you’re most likely DEAD (or some sort of communist.)

I disagree. The internet and based boy pseudo intellectual types have pretty much drained away all the bad assery and mysticism from martial arts and the far east. Bring up Kung Fu or Karate and a bunch of MMAfags will dogpile you and tell you that it’s not a real combat art and that it’s all theatrical, and that their favorite MMA homo could beat up Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan. They’re not wrong but it’s still annoying. Same with movies: I used to unironically watch Seagal and Van Damme movies just to watch them kick ass. With zoomers it’s all le ironic faggotry. “Haha, this movie is so bad, but look at me, I’m still watching it, I’m such a character!” “Lol, Seagal is such a fraud. Did you know that he shit himself once?!” Let’s not even get into ninja. In the 80’s, ninja were still seen as mysterious, bad ass killing machines that belonged to secretive, ancient clans. These days historyfags will tell you that ‘ackshually, shinobi (or ninja, for you baka gaijin) were just a bunch of peasants that were paid by lords/generals to spy on their rivals.’ Again, not wrong, but annoying nonetheless. Back then we didn’t give a shit whether or not something was historically accurate or practical. We just unironically enjoyed things that looked and sounded fucking cool. Revenge of Shinobi’s intro, with Musashi blocking the shurikens with his katana is a return to a much simpler and better time. Internet pseuds trying to one up each other ruined everything. No one would make games as unapologetically cool and masculine like Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi these days.

Imo, the Ninja Gaiden trilogy is harder than Shinobi 3 and Shadow Dancer. I’d say The Revenge of Shinobi is about on par with NG for me. Unlike NG1 and 2, TRoS also doesn’t have unlimited continues. So you probably will have to restart from the beginning several times before you start getting good at it.

as someone who's beaten ninja gaiden revenge of shinobi at least is more difficult. ninja gaiden is a straight up mild experience for 3 levels, surprisingly so, gets moderately hard on the 4th level, hard on the 5th level and has the infamous final level. ultimately with unlimited continues you'll grind out the last couple levels in a few play sessions tough as they might be. revenge of shinobi level 1 is as hard as ninja gaiden level 5, the very first section is going to have you repeatedly dying, and you need to beat 7 more stages with a handful of continues.
as a rule of thumb an unlimited continue game has to be extremely ridiculously hard to trump limited continue games that aren't mario or sonic.

As someone who's also 1 life cleared NG1 and revisited it many times over the years, agree. NG1's difficulty is so overblown it's not even funny.

The fact that people act like Jaquio is "one of the hardest bosses on the nes" when he has ONE ATTACK which is extremely simple and straight forward to dodge just shows how utterly mindbroken the idea of actually having a penalty for losing makes people.

I know what you mean, anon. Back then, martial artists were seen as unstoppable killing machines. There was a huge mystique around martial arts in general as nobody knew a whole lot about them in the west besides the hardcore types. Now with the advent of MMA, its pretty much known by all that shit like Aikido, Kung fu etc. isn't practical in real life. I do kinda want to go back to those times.

What I do now when I watch those old movies is just put myself in a headspace where the rules of the rule world don't apply to the rules of the movie. I imagine that in this movie world, that stuff works and what I know about martial arts doesn't apply. Idk if that sounds retarded or autistic but it helps me enjoy those movies a lot even when faggots try to tell me IT WOULDN'T WORK IRLL!!!

Thank you. I’m glad someone else can relate to where I’m coming from. I don’t even bother bringing up a lot of old action movies on /tv/ anymore since you just get people telling you that they’re stupid and cheesy. Or irony bros only enjoying them “ironically”. It seems like no one is able to authentically enjoy things anymore. When I still watch those old movies I go in with a similar mentality. If this movie tells that Chuck Norris can roundhouse kick a bunch of dudes holding uzis, then who am I to disagree? If Shinobi wants to portray Ninja as master swordsmen who can use magic and take on soldiers with machine guns, then, awesome! Internet culture is all about taking the fun out of things. If SEGA ever makes a new Shinobi I hope they stick to the more fantastical direction of the entire series. A gritty, more “grounded” Shinobi would not be Shinobi, or God forbid, they make it into a stealth game.

Got him, looks like a night of sleep did wonders to me, I have finally conquered The Revenge of Shinobi™ all along.
No continues used, plenty of lives to spare, two specials in hand to deal with Zeed while having POW, played smarter overall (using the lightning shield to preserve POW whenever I knew I could get an extra special in the stage), only 4 lives lost during the playthrough (a stupid death in the motorway stage, falling to the sea in 7-1 because of stupidly difficult jump, Godzilla killing me, falling to the sea in 8-1 because of unlucky hit)

I struggled a bit with it at the beginning but after a while it becomes second nature. The problem, if you come from Shinobi III (and viceversa) is that the timing and execution are different so it messes with your memory.

When you think about it, Stage 2-1 is a bit like the Marble Zone of RotS: it turns the entire game upside down to show you a face of the game you didn't expect. Suddenly you have this pure platforming level in this sidescrolling action game you were expecting, and it forces you to master the mechanics and git gud (unless you cope by using fushin, the newbie crutch, which will continue the cycle of pain in future levels) in order to progress and discover what the game has to offer.

After a few days playing Shinobi III, I'm ready to stop with it. It doesn't capture me the same as RotS. The movement and abilities might be higher but the level design is all over the place, some control gimmicks work against it (wall jumping, hanging, they add nothing in terms of engagement), the setting and progression lack the internal consistency of the previous title, the music is heavily downgraded (RotS is really one of the best OSTs on the system) with the exception of whirlwind, the graphics are modern and technically impressive but somehow also uglier in terms of overarching aesthetics, the lowered challenge likewise means execution doesn't matter as much and you can get by throughout the game by playing more carelessly.

In my opinion it's a lesser product that fools the easily impressionable by adding more quantity at the expense of quality. Revenge of the Shinobi is really the peak of the series.

ninja gaiden is such a brilliant realization of a ninja game, the break neck rhythm based jump slashes, never taking a step back. shinobi is a good game but the concept of speed walk and jump 20 feet in the air vertically doesn't have the same spark.

He also did Actraiser. I don’t care if he plagiarized a few songs, he’s way better than Koji Kondo, and nothing will change my opinion. Not like Kondo didn’t plagiarize songs too (Gerudo Valley=the Final Countdown.) Literally every old school game composer did it at one point or another.

It's not a problem of the skills per se but how they're used in conjunction with the level design... it comes at a cost of pacing and player expression. The game is basically in autopilot half of the time, either via autoscrolling stages or sections where all you do is walljumping/hanging from rail to rail while performing very little action. I just don't feel awesome playing this, it's not hard to understand, it's not even about the challenge. The mechanics are solid, the game is not.

I mean I like Shinobi 3 too. Maybe not as much as TROS or SD, but it’s still a classic Sega game. Just because I’m critical of certain design elements doesn’t mean that I hate it. This is 4chan, though. So I must pick a side while trashing the other.

Instead of bitching about UFC, you two dopes should try watching some. You would learn that what you are saying is a bunch of bullshit. It's true that in the early days a wrestlebox style with the occasional low kick was the most dominant MMA style but there has been a lot of evolution since then. It's actually amazing to watch how Martial Arts have been rediscovered instead of reinvented by MMA. Watch this and see for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JBATWnthNg

Culture and how things are perceived matter. Why do you think we don’t get cool ninja games or media anymore? Most 80’s kids loved things like Ninja Turtles, wanted to own a pair of nunchucks and shuriken. What was the last good ninja game? Ninja Gaiden 2 on the 360? Even Tenchu, a series that went into the stealthier route, is dead. Kids these days don’t care about ninja anymore. Historyfags bringing up the fact that historically, shinobi were actually kind of lame had a lot to do with that. Same with things like Kung Fu and other Asian martial arts. You’ll never have another Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee type figure because retards can’t just enjoy things without thinking about practicality and “muh real fighting”. Even you’re guilty of this by trying to “prove” the usefulness of things like Kung Fu in the ufc. It doesn’t fucking matter if it’s practical or theatrical. Just enjoy it for what it is and use your fucking imagination.

Culture is always trend hopping, it's inevitable. Nothing lasts forever and there's never going to be another Wild West craze like in the 50 and 60 either. Nobody saw the current cape shit craze coming before it happened and it is already dying because no trend lasts forever. Martial Arts and Eastern Mysticism were just another trend like any other that came and went. Don't blame UFC for that, it only started getting popular in the late 00s, long after the Ninja craze of the 80s dead already.
