Supported by more devices I guess, also many GPUs can do H264 hardware encoding so it can take a few seconds instead of up to half an hour or more to encode a file. I used my GPU to encode that OP video.

Your CPU would have to be extremely ancient for it to take 30 mins for a 4MB vp9 webm. Mine takes about a minute
I guess there are some poorfags with 10 years old low end CPUs here though and h264 is at least better than vp8

Let's try an experiment, I tried encoding the same video four times in ffmpeg using libvpx vp8, libvpx vp9, CPU H264, and GPU H264 all with the same settings of a CRF of 4, VBR of 1512, and in two-pass mode, though it seems like GPU encoding does not support two-pass.

Mind you I am hardly an expert in video encoding, also not sure what would be the best sample video, I just used whatever. I guess somebody who knows how vp8/9/h264 work would be a lot better in choosing videos that would look better in vp8/9 or h264.

Anyway, here is the libvpx/VP8

Here is something that's extremely harsh on video compression: Grain combined with fog/smoke (Silent Hill 3 is retro so it's still /vr/)
It will look like ass because of that combined with the filesize limit plus length of the video forcing me to use an inadequate bitrate, but that's intentional as I want to push the codecs as hard as possible
I suggest watching the entire video for each as different parts push different things

Starting with VP8: It's shit, there is literally no reason to use it now that we have h264 for fast encoding. It looks the worst by far. Never use that garbage. The quality gap between this and any other codec you can currently use on 4chan is extremely big
