Hey /vr/, i want to play my genesis 2 with composite because RF looks like shit, so my question is: what is better, a composite cable like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Sega-Genesis-Standard-Cable-Bulk-Packaging/dp/B002GCFI2K

Or this AV mod?

>>1138946
buy the official cable.

>> No.1138952

>>1138950
or one from radioshack i remember seeing one that would work.

>> No.1138954

>>1138946
of the two, i'd go for av mod

>> No.1138968

>>1138946
i just checked they do make a cable that goes from the av port of the genesis to a r/y/w av jack granting stereo sound.

>> No.1138969

go for the cable and you can get stereo sound off of it to boot

>> No.1139046

Audio is better through the AV mod.

>> No.1139367

None of the above. Find something like an amiga monitor that accepts RGB input and RGB mod it. You can literally pint it out line for line or hunt down a scart cable. Seriously, once you go RGB, you don't go back.

old games in rgb colors differ from the standard set of colors i heard?

>RGB mod it
You don't need to. All Mega Drive/Genesis 1/2 consoles can output RGB out of the box. You just need a cable

>>1139381
No... Maybe you were reading a conversation about NES/Famicom RGB modding where it's possible to swap the PPU (picture processing unit) for one from a Playchoice-10 arcade board. That was you can get RGB but the colours are a bit different.

RGB is the exact colours. If you use composite or RF the colours will generally appear more washed out, in addition to the clarity being much worse

As a side note, the NES RGB thing has now been solved so you don't have to cut up an arcade board for that chip, and the colours are correct - http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=47617

I dropped in to let OP know basically everything that this guy said but I can also add that if OP is playing on CRT he can use pic related to go from RGB SCART to composite for USA compatibility - costs $50 (plus $7 for a breakout adapter since the developers didn't include sound for some reason)

If OP is playing exclusively on HDTVs he can get the xrgb mini but it's like ten times as much and still doesn't display as accurately as a good $10 used SD CRT

it's 9-pin connector to rca aka 9pin connector to composite video it's used for a connecter on my home stereo is why i discovered it.

Not OP but I'm moving and a friend is giving me an old TV with RGB inputs. Does anyone have some comparison images? I want to know what I'm getting into before I dump a bunch of money into it.

im amazed how much better rgb can look even on a 20 year old game, makes me bummed out that i don't have rgb/scart cables for my systems and if i choose to update them i can't just input them into my elgato hd

You can get much better quality from composite with a good cable, good enough that the only "problem" you have with quality is the color banding, which actually makes old games look better due to them using dithered graphics to cheat for more colors.
A good composite cable doesn't have the ghosting in that picture for one.

Also the topmost picture adds scanlines for whatever reason while the others don't - were they taken from different sets?

Blending wise, yes; But not for clarity.

>>1141383
I wish I could tell you; It's not my picture, I just grabbed it from the retro console wiki.

The bottom most one would likely have to be, as I don't believe there are any PVM models that support RF, or even have tuner for that matter. I will say, scanlines don't always show up as prominently with lower quality video signals. This is over RF for example(on a consumer WEGA Trinitron) >>1139083

As for "good quality cables", you also have to take into consideration that different model Genesis/MD have wildly varying composite quality.

Another Sanic comparison from the wiki: http://images.wikia.com/retroconsoles/images/e/ea/Composite-component-sonic2-title.jpg
Component is from an emulator on the Wii; Gen Plus GX if I had to guess. Wouldn't be surprised it the composite one is as well.

An FFIX comparison from the same person:

And a quick FFIX title screen comparison I threw together:

Just a warning, that last one is ~10000x7000px

Kya, I made that picture, and it was taken on legitimate hardware (The X'Eye to be specific) for both pictures.

I wasn't aware there was a way to get component video on legit hardware for the genesis; my apologies.

Well, it's technically converted from SCART, but the end result is pretty much the same.
