Retro Atlus thread? Retro Atlus thread.

I hope for this to be both a general and an inquisitive thread. Some questions: Are the old SMT games still good or are they dated? Did Atlus make any other worthy games outside of SMT? What's the scoop on the stuff they did for LJN? etc.

All discussion regarding Atlus gaems are welcome.

SMT2 is still pretty good but SMT1 has a *ridiculous* encounter rate. Don't ever try to play that shit without fast forward.

Whatever you do, don't play the first Majin Tensei (I don't know if 2 is any good)

It's just so goddamn boring.

I have been pretty interested myself. What about the original Digital Devil Stories? Should I try them out?

I'm at least going to watch the OVA.

Did anyone else play the original version of Persona on PS1?

>>1134845

I still must play it, whenever the translation comes out. I owe it to myself to at least try it.

Also, that girl looks a bit like Beth from SMT2.

>What's the scoop on the stuff they did for LJN?

I think that LJN was looking for game programmers in Japan (since that's where most NES programmers were at), and Atlus decided to step up to the task for some cash. From that point, Atlus was a subcontractor for LJN, tasked to make 8 games for them. Atlus developed three games for them (Friday 13th, Karate Kid, and MLB), while they contracted other, smaller companies for others. Westone, of Wonder Boy fame, did Jaws. Sanritsu made T&C Surf Designs, Gotcha, and NFL. No one knows who made X-Men, some people think it's by Pixel. It does share sound effects with the FDS gamee "topple zip".
'
The Sanritsu and Atlus games all feature music by the same composer, Hirohiko Takayama, who worked for Atlus for a long ass time.

I bought this a while ago because I saw ATLUS on the cover. I have not really played it yet, looks like a first person survival horror game.

I tried it a few years back, and it has aged badly. The first person dungeon perspective is so outdated and the battles are painfully slow. I also tried playing Eternal Punishment, but the battle system was too cumbersome for me to deem it worth the time.

>> No.1135246

So, what do we know about them and they license since they have been bought ?

No wonder a developer hasn't stepped forth and said anything yet. This game is just weird. The music is surprisingly catchy.

It's great. Really great. Ironically, I don't think it was developed by Atlus, only published. The thing is that the actual developer, Dennou Eizou, was so obscure that they often go undocumented. I'm pretty sure the only other game they did was deSPIRIA for the Dreamcast.

I loved it when I first played it, mostly because of the battle system. Talking/negotiating/recruiting demons was the best part because I never did anything like that in an rpg. Although I was disappointed when it never turned into a dating simulator.

I don't think anyone wants to take credit for it. Strangely enough, it seems to have served as an inspiration for those Marvel Alliance games.

As for Topple Zip, this is the (only) gameplay footage I can find on YouTube.

He even says it sounds like the X-Men game.

Isn't there a SNES remake of MT1+2 that's being translated?

@all:

I want to play Megami Tensei 1 for the NES/Famicom. Does anyone know if it's been translated? There's this translator out there who reached 85% completion on its translation, but there's nothing playable out there..or is there?

Or alternatively, the SNES version/remake of MT1 and 2 is fine too. ANYONE? Reason: I'm autistic and want to start SMT from the very very very beginning.

>> No.1137292

>>1137289

You can start with SMT because SMT starts on the SNES. The games you want to play are the first two Megaten games, which is an umbrella over the whole series. Normally I wouldn't point this out but /smtg/ fags get real antsy about the difference and I want to save you from that particular brand of autism because it's not pretty.

ALSO

Yes, the SFC versions of those two games are being translated. No idea where it is and when it will come out, but it's been worked on. There are a few videos up demoing it on youtube but not much in the way of actual playable things. No idea of the AGTP translation is still going. Honestly, I'd rather play the SFC versions because they look prettier.

Until then, just sit back and enjoy the soundtracks for the two games, because they're pretty damn good.

>>1135609

You're going to be using AGTP's translation (probably with some additional patches to fix the glitches in it). You can find these at the SMT general over on /vg/. It should be in one of the pastebins in the OP.

Jack Bros is a fucking fantastic game (and the first MegaTen game to get localized) but barely anyone has played it. 3DS remake/re-release when?

>> No.1137337

>>1135563
Yeah, the game is part dating sim. Honest to god dating sim. The combat phase isn't awful, but it's not good. It's pretty braindead, but that's not why you play the game. Definitely worth playing in my mind, if you're open for a very different JPRG.

>> No.1137357

I thought the Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei (MT1&2) patch had been halted/canceled? I was almost tempted to learn moon just to be able to play it at this rate.

The lack of translator groups willing to get down and funky with it is a little surprising. You'd think with the rise in popularity of the series in recent years people would be clamoring to have all the old unlocalized games translated.

I understand text-heavy games like the Megami Tensei series can be a huge bitch, but that didn't stop them with SMT.

>> No.1137451

>>1137357
It might be shitty, or hard to modify coding with the NES, translating isn't the only thing to do with translation hacks.
