It's a very old CD drive, from the early 90s. This is one of those cases where the quality of the media and burn speed matters. I noticed when using my Taito Yuden disks at the slowest burn speed I can they worked fine, but when I tried to use max speed or some cheap old Memorex disks they would not even boot.

The Model 1 was also much much more picky than the Model 2, though even within those models they used different cd drive manufacturers and some were more picky than others.

>Only the Mega SD and Mega Everdrive Pro and only SEGA CD, not 32X

Also you can't use those cart's CD emulation features if the 32X is plugged in, it interferes with it. So every time you want to play a CD game using those flash carts you have to remove the 32X, and re-install it every time you want to play a 32X game.

HEAR ME OUT!

What you just described is unironically half the fun now. I have been saying it for a few years now but this hardware is getting old and as a result the hobby is going the way of cars. If you want to collect original hardware than you need to know how it works, know how to fix it, and you better derive some form of enjoyment out of fixing it because you might have to do that often (depending on the size of your collection). The days of being able to just buy any old system and plug it in are nearly gone, so many need some form of repair now whether it be a recap, replacing a broken power jack, or whatever. Even the games themselves might need work, like having to replace the flash ram (for saving) chip on Sonic 3, or repairing a game that won't turn on because of damaged traces or whatever.

Guys who are into old cars are like this. They know how it works, they know how to fix it when something goes wrong, and they spend a lot of time fixing it and have fun doing so. Retro gaming is going that way, and it does so more and more every single day as all of this stuff continues to get older.

If you don't like it, buy a MiSTer.

OP here. I did get it figured out. It's almost certainly just a bad patch cable, again. Running the setup with the 32x powered, but without A/V from it, results in no issues. Gonna try another cheap one and see if that fixes it. If not, maybe I fucked up recapping it, but I'm going to sell it and get a replacement if that's the case. :)
>>11346923
I agree. Part of why I bought a broken Sega CD to start with was so I could fix it. Fixing your own hardware and bringing it back to life makes these investments feel that much more personal. Hopefully I can fix the first one, because I think what's wrong with it is a bad flex cable connecting the laser to the motherboard. And either way, despite my frustration dealing with these systems, this has been a great learning experience. This has been my first time soldering anything that wasn't a Chinese practice board from Amazon, and I've learned a ton about other shit that should help me preserve my other consoles for years to come.

It's not, they're a pain.
I still have all my childhood games but even when I replay them, I use an everdrive instead (32X i use a mister). You have to maintain your games and it's a chore.
Some people wont admit it, but they care more about maintaining games than playing them. if you actually like playing games, get everdrives or a mister or something.

Yes. But you can also use a dc adapter on the nes instead because of the rectifier. So technically it's actually better to just use a dc on it than the stock ac for less strain on your system. Fucking nintendo. I would have blown it out either way since the polarity is reversed on Sega consoles

>> No.11349428

Eh this should work. I personally don't trust these triad things but rating wise it should be fine. Good news is you couldn't have blown it out with a 32x plug I just checked and it's way too small to fit. The polarity should be correct. Sounds strange but it could be a surge strip/ups issue? Dirty power fucks up electronics and image quality sometimes. If you have a model 1 cd it's 100% a motor issue and you'd be better off getting a whole new drive. I've never had that any problems with sega stuff. The original xbox on the other hand as the worst disc drive I've ever seen so I feel your pain

It's fun and more authentic, it's SOVL... but it's also way more expensive and takes more work. There's no perfect way of doing things, just the one you like most. Experiment with emulation a bit more, if you prefer real hardware stick to it, but if not, keep trying to use real hardware, or you could just blend both and use each in their own specific situations that's better for you too.

Be Me.
Find Japanese Model 2 Mega Drive and Model 2 Mega CD listed on ebay AS-IS / Untested from DKoldies. Win the Auction for about $140USD shipped.
Receive the Unit. It's packaged well. Outside of console is pretty dirty. Take it a part. Inside is clean and nothing looks wrong. Plug the system in with the cables I had hooked up on my television. Everything works 100%. The Mega CD works fantastic with zero issues. There's a few scuffs on the exterior cases, and that's all that's wrong.
Thought to my self. Wow... did they really not test this because it's Japanese?
Two months pass and I want to play the system at my parents house and use the cable that came with the system. It's a really nice looking gold plated A/V cable. System is dead. Won't do anything. Dead Dead... Find a different cable. Works just fine.
Proceed to laugh my ass off at DKOldies.
