ITT: Post what you believe to be the most beautiful game that falls under the /vr/ rules.

You can post more than one if it's too hard to choose or if you want to make the thread more active.

It'll be hard for anyone to beat my choice you know it to be true.

And my runner up would be either pic related or Metal Slug

Completely unrelated as far as I know. SF1 is a pretty damn cool game, though.

Anyway, to answer OP, I think Metal Slug 3.

Rayforce and Metal Slug 3

Sadly, in the more than a decade since MS3 there has still not been a more visually impressive 2D game. People just sort of gave up on drawing high quality dot art. Fighting games hardly count because there's so much less to draw in them compared to a long singleplayer experience full of different areas and enemies.

I find it a bit redundant to post good looking 2D screenshots given that they always look pretty most of the time.

Absolutely loved the visuals though.

I agree with all the positives about LoM (the worldbuilding was quite fun, too), but the lack of challenge was always there from the beginning. It's almost like playing a beat-'em-up like The Simpsons/X-Men/TMNT/Final Fight/etc. where your life is fully replenished after each individual enemy you fight. That makes it pretty damn hard to die.

The original PS1 Spyro games have aged surprisingly well for early 3D games.

I think it's a fallacy to say early 3D has aged poorly. Says who? I can play lots of games on the N64 and PS1 and be totally engrossed in the visuals.

I agree. One time on RetroForce Go!, Chad said he couldn't go back and play Ocarina Of Time because the visuals made his eyes bleed. As much as I love that man in a completely non-sexual, I seethed with anger when he said that

Real gamers are not hindered by visuals dammit!

I agree with you partly. I don't think early 3D games have aged poorly at all. I still vividly remember my utter disgust when I say them in the magazines. Of course I was blown away once I saw them in motion, but they were ugly even back then. It has nothing to do with age.

I wasn't being sarcastic or anything, I was genuinely complimenting their ability to do exaggerated, cartoonish animation well. If you read some of the interviews and such with those spriters, you can tell they really had a passion for their craft.
