Sega has like 80 shmups. Pretty delusional to pretend it isn't a great shmup machine.

Almost all of Sega's shmups are on base hardware, half of PCE's shmups required an expensive add-on and most of the base hardware Hu-card shmups looked primitive compared to the ones on the Megadrive.
PCE has over 100 shmups, no one is trying to take its king of shmups crown but to not acknowledge Sega is a close second is ridiculous.

Good looking system (and especially the box), but it was made as a budget option and had its expansion slot made intentionally incompatible with all accessories (i.e. CD drive) so that poor gamers would have to buy a whole new system later to upgrade. Thanks NEC!
