Hey /vr/, let's have a Game Gear thread. Personally I love mine, and my library has grown considerably since last I posted. Here is a picture of all my CiB games. I just love the box variety, you can tell what year a GG game came out by it's box type. There are plenty of quality games as well, although there are some real stinkers too (I really got screwed on Taz-Mania, what a piece of garage).

Let's all talk about this system. Fond memories? Hated games? Favourite games? Battery life complaints?

My top five favourites that I've played would be (in no order):
Streets of Rage 2, Tails' Adventure, Psychic World, Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya and Shinobi II: The Silent Fury.

Mega Man

Sadly a complete copy, even a loose copy, of this game is far higher than I am willing to pay. I will have to wait until the market dies down I suppose

>> No.1127410

im not gonna lie my collection is pretty small but the game gear (that i just got modified with an LED backlight as opposed to the battery draining florescent that sega used) houses some of my favorite games of all time and with the master gear converter the library doubles and you can play such classics as phantasy star, and alex kidd

My top 5 are
1. defenders of oasis
2. sonic chaos
3. shinobi
4. columns (way better than tetris)
5.super smash tv

>>1127410

Is it just me or is Super Columns really hard? Like I get creamed on the second stage against the computer in story mode.

>> No.1129975

OP here, I have everything in the OP pic scanned, boxes and manuals (except Taz-Mania). If anyone wants I don't mind putting it on Mega and posting a link.

This fucking Sonic game

>Fast gameplay
>Awesome music
>That instruction manual that was in six goddamn different languages.

Love the Game Gear. Tied for favorite portable game system next to Neo Geo Pocket Color.

Favorite games would be Mega Man, Earthworm Jim, Sonic Drift 2, Shinobi, Dragon Crystal, and Bust-A-Move. The port of Sonic Spinball was pretty good too. Oh, and all the Sonic games were good. Plus Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

I think the only game I've ever really hated for the Game Gear is X-Men. God I hate it.

Just wish a good fighter would've landed on the GG. None of the Mortal Kombat games were that spectacular and Virtual Fighter Animation was decent at best.

>Mortal Kombat
>Don't own a SNES or Genesis but have a GG
>Borrow MK for GG from friend
>Parents find it
>Mom shits a chicken
>Dad tries it out
>"There's no blood or guts or anything, don't see why he can't play it."
Well that worked out well.

Master System version was better.

>> No.1130054

>>1130041

A veritably false statement. The SMS version is easier because the AI is dumbed down (play the first boss in both versions; in the GG version the balls move randomly but it's always the same in SMS) and the level design is simplified to be easier (see Green Hills Zone Act 3 for the biggest difference). The GG version is superior.

I thought Virtua Fighter Animation was good, I liked how faithful it remained to the characters in VF. They have the same physical motions even if the graphics are 8 bit. It's very well done. But yeah, my big problem with it is the counter is only 30 seconds long.

Lol. When I was a kid I enjoyed the hell out of MK II on GG, but as I got older I realized it was pretty bad. Still play it from time to time though.

>>1130054
I guess "decent at best" was a little harsh, but as a kid with a Saturn who played Virtua Fighter 2 all the time, Animation was lacking a bit from the experience.

>> No.1130112

>>1130079

Oh definitely, but it's still a pretty good 8-bit fighter. One of the best on the system.

VF2 is still one of my favourite fighters to date

This is a pretty old picture of my collection, but I moved out of the US and had to leave my games in storage, so an old picture will have to do until I'm re-united with it.

My favorites are probably:
Shining Force
Tails Adventure
Shinobi
Revenge of Drancon
Sonic 2 GG

Eh looking for a game... I remember it played like Shining Force and the main character was female, maybe a princess? Guess that's not too much info.

STREETS OF RAGE 1 & 2 WAS ON THE FUCKING GAME GEAR!?!?!? how the fuck did I miss this my entire life...

>> No.1131356

>>1130208

Streets of Rage 1 is shit, I won't lie. It's so bad.
Streets of Rage 2 is fucking amazing, one of the best games the system has to offer. More moves, 3 characters instead of 2, more levels, super moves, everything.

>>1130117

Revenge of Drancon is a great game but it is soooo fucking long. I got to level 8 and I had spent hours already by then. There's no password system. I checked a guide after to find there is 10 levels with 4 stages each? God fucking damn. If there was even a game that's too long, it is Revenge of Drancon. But it is still great.

By the way, I counted up and I have 56 different games for the Game Gear. I'm pretty happy with most of them, probably like 10-15 are complete shit

I'm looking into getting a Game Gear, what AC cord works?

Is the one for the Nomad compatible with the Game Gear?

>> No.1131393

>>1131362

The only thing that works is Model MK2103, I believe. That's the one I use.

>> No.1131410

wow, i'm an idiot. i go to check what model my Nomad adapter is for and right there in big letters it says:

"FOR USE WITH GENESIS AND GAME GEAR"

Guess that solves that problem.

Good stuff. Now for the games. Might I recommend Sonic Triple Trouble?

How did you mod the backlight? I'm curious, because if I get a GG that's what I want to do, but is there a guide online or is it easy?

Here's a short review of some games I beat or played today:

+Ax Battler: Legend of the Golden Axe
-Very similar to Zelda 2, but with better music and graphics. Worse gameplay though. The encounter rate is absolute crap at times, and this is the only game I have ever encountered where leaving the menu can cause a random encounter. Very hard game, but overall pretty decent. There is no final boss, which leaves the game on an unsatisfactory note. Recommended, but it is not for everyone.

+Ninja Gaiden
-Much easier port of the NES version. It is easier because you get thrown straight up instead of knocked back when taking damage. There are only 4 levels, and the game is overall easy. Still, very good game. Recommended.

+Taz-Mania
-This game is unbearable. It is just awful. Bad gameplay, music and graphics, not a single praiseworthy thing exists in this game. Not recommended to anyone.
