/vr/ I need your help. My kid cousin showed some interest in retro games and told me he really wanted a gameboy. Haven't seen him in a few years so I got him one as a gift, in box and pristine... Too pristine. What do you think?

Game Box Plus is unironically better. Built-in battery, backlight, and games, and no huge loss if he doesn't want it. Plus you can play it on the TV >>11208597

There's also the GB300 which is similar but you can add games and it supports other consoles

He already has a computer and a switch so he's definitely already emulating stuff. I'm pretty much the only person who'll make sure he gets the real thing so I'm going to do it right.

Whoops attached the image without the question. Is this supposed to shine at all on a gameboy box?

Have you given the GB itself a spin? Does it work?
Does it look factory new? Test it with a few games from simple to more challenging for the hardware.
Or is this just about the box?

The gameboy is real. I don't even know if there are actual gameboy knockoffs if not actually coming from the 90s. It's the box that's making me think twice since there are new reproductions out there.

It could be a repro box, but unless you overpaid, then does it really matter?

You're a cool dude for caring so much. I remember when I was a kid relatives would buy me blatantly fake consoles, not stress over the box being a genuine original

I wouldn't give a kid that box if its real, it would be way too rare, I did buy a reproduction of the gameboy pocket box from aliexpress that was pretty good. As long as the system is decent its all good. I got a later version as a kid and it came with advertisements for nintendo magazine, a warranty card and mine had a page with advertisements for stuff like wario land 3 and stuff like secret of mana. Later ones would have had advertisements for n64 games and gb pocket. The brochures and system would be in their own little plastic bags.

>>11215031
Yes, who cares if its fake anyway, whats the back of the box like.

Yeah I don't see it, it's matte. It does have all the box inserts though and they all smell like they're 35 years old. The outside doesn't. Fuck here's the back

I would absolutely do that with you if I had a real box myself, but I certainly do not have that because who cares about boxes (you, but not me)

It looks 100% real, OP. Do repro guys actually put that effort into the shit they make to do 1:1 copies? Unless you paid like $1,000 for it, then I don't see what the issue is.

Looks real to me, usually those fake boxes have a "stickier" print because they use cheap shitty ink.

One thing I rarely see is the lack of that proof-of-sale slip thing that's usually on the back of them. Does this imply it was ordered through like a Sears catalog rather than bought at a retail store?

I reverse searched the OP image and it took me to eBay prices that were beyond batshit insane. Looks like it costs more around $250-$400 range, which makes a lot more sense.
