Which games for it truly still hold up? What is the best of the best on the system? So far I've picked up most of the Sonic games and Castlevania. I'm really enjoying this system, and am wanting to play through the best it has to offer but am skeptical when Boomers say games like Altered Beast and Quackshot are peak. Maybe I'm retarded but with current game prices I want to be wary of what I purchase and I trust you guys judgement over some onions retro YouTuber.

Alright serious answer this time, Aladdin and Vectorman are commonly recommended as they tend to go for cheap and are legitimately good games. Streets of Rage series is nice if you like beat 'em ups. Columns and Pac-Attack if you like puzzlers. 6-Pak comes with both SoR 1 and Columns. Bio-Hazard Battle is surprisingly cheap if you like shmups. Cool Spot and Earthworm Jim are pretty good, there's also Mick and Mack: Global Gladiators if you really like McDonalds but don't feel like paying for TreasureLand Adventure (imo both games are very good, unironically).

Jesus what a sad thread. Not your fault but my god the emuindians do not play any games do they? You're barely getting any replies and it's pathetic.

Some kind anon has already mentioned Aladdin which is a great game and the best Aladdin game. That's a good start even if obvious, these days its become less appreciated due to the snes aladdin spam but both games are completely different, and the lack of challenge in the snes version makes both the sms and genesis one stand out.

Granada is not a shooter, but a tank based game. You explore these large levels tanking on hordes of enemies but the levels and bosses are insanely creative. Great challenge and some very cool stages.

Socket gets repetitive but the levels being these exploration focused ordeals with wildly colorful visuals and great music keeps it interesting. The team at Vic Tokai mastered that Genesis sound chip. Check out the way the backing rhythm gradually takes over in this song, it's brilliant stuff you never see in games from back then:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoKOo_JRayw

Bonanza Bros is a favorite of mine, arcade stealth in every sense. The characters have great cartoony humor to their actions and all the best gags are integrated as gameplay mechanics with my favorite of being opening the door on an enemy to smash them and daze them for a while. This is a good one for replays.

Vic Tokai put out a series of great shooters Trouble Shooter/Battle Mania and Battle Mania Daiginjou, you play as these two mercenary babes flying around and shooting back to back. The first game is good and has lots of creativity with how the levels and bosses can forcibly separate the pair while you're still in control of both of them leading to some puzzling action scenarios that are satisfying as hell to win. The sequel is a master work for the console.

Hitting character limit so I'll fire off some names:
Columns 3
The Haunting
Midnight Resistance
Devilish
Arnold Palmer's Tournament Golf (trust me)

It really depends on which genres you prefer. It's better for shmups, but worse for jarpigs for example, but both consoles have well-rounded libraries, there are plenty of good shmups on the SNES / SFC, and the CD add-on adds several jarpigs to the MD, Lunar II is easily a TOP-10 16-bit jarpig.

I'm thinking about picking up a Genesis and a small collection of 5 or 6 games at most. I was looking at picking up Comix Zone, Beavis & Butthead, and either Desert, Jungle or Urban Strike. SNES used to be my favorite console until I played SEGA CD. It's literally like Genesis on steroids. There's really nothing like it on SNES, closest thing is Turbo-Grafx CD and 3DO. 32X doesn't have many games but it's wild seeing 3D games on the Genesis, AND both are much easier to emulate (and imho better in general) than the Saturn.

>I know the general consensus is that SNES was better.
I feel like a lot of that has to do with the death of arcade games which used to be the dominant game style but is now considered niche. Ask a normie what SNES games mog the Genesis and their list will usually consist of Mario World, All-Stars, Yoshi Island, Donkey Kong 1, 2 & 3, Metroid, Kirby Superstar, Kirby 3, Zelda, Earthbound, Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana... and they are all relatively easy, fairly long games that let you save frequently and have infinite continues.
Genesis has some of those types of games but if you ask Genesis heads what the good games are they respond with games like Shinobi 3, Streets of Rage 2, Thunder Force III and IV, Comix Zone, MUSHA, Gunstar Heroes, Rocket Knight Adventures, Contra Hardcorps, Bloodlines, Ranger X, Alien Soldier and so on. While more Nintendo like games exist, the heart and soul has always been the arcade-y side of the console. If you are someone who prefers the Genesis then you are the type to value a game like Shinobe 3 on the same level as one of this big relatively easy Nintendo titles.
I think that the Nintendo fans that play and appreciate SNES games like Contra 3, Super Ghouls and Ghosts, Pocky and Rocky, Higane, Dracula X, R-Type 3 and the like are the kinds of Nintendo players that respect the Genesis and think of it as a strong competitor. The kind of Nintendo player that sticks to the easy titles, they are the ones that thing "all the Genesis has is Sonic".

You already got good recs so I'm just going to tell you the MD mentality that >>11208078 touched on. A lot of younger gamers, especially millennials like myself, default to SNES games being better than MD games because we were literal children at the time. It took me forever as a kid to beat Chill Penguin's stage and Chill Penguin himself. SNES generally favored games for kids that needed unlimited continues or saves to stand a chance of beating the game. Every Sega console existed to get the arcade experience at home so it's full of action games that you're supposed to try and 1cc. These games that absolutely destroyed kids and were targeted to action game maniacs. You have to approach these games not as something you play to turn your brain off and relax with, you have to be mentally and physically active with them like a sport. Play them in short bursts so fatigue doesn't slow down your reflexes and frustrate you.

As for games try to avoid arcade ports like Altered Beast or Strider. Those exist solely to appeal to people that liked those games in the arcade, there's no reason for anyone to play them now. MD games are at their best when they're home console games with the hard edge of arcade action. Shinobi 3 is a good example of this, the difficulty is moderate since it doesn't need to earn money for an arcade operator but the high octane action remains. Shinobi 3 feels like a modern indie platformer because you have options like dive kicks, blocks, wall jump, dashing, dashing attacks, ninja magic right out the gate. Maybe a modern game would make you deal with progression filler to learn your full moveset but in Shinobi you're a fully trained ninja ready to rip ass from go.

Every Konami game is good, every Treasure game is good. If you're willing to learn Sonic's weird physics you'll like the games, if you wanted cookie cutter platformer physics Sonic will make you suicidal. Garfield Caught In The Act is bad but it looks really fucking good on a CRT.

Here are my favorites for the SEGA Mega Drive:

Aladdin
Arch Rivals
Ariel: The Little Mermaid
Batman: The Video Game
Bonanza Bros.
Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
QuackShot starring Donald Duck
Sonic 3D Blast
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin
Streets of Rage 2
Super Bubble Bobble MD
TECMO World Cup '92
The Lion King
The Terminator
Venom & Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety
World Cup Italia '90
World of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck

I'd still emulate before buying if I were you, it's too expensive to spend money on something just to not like it, I'd use the recommendations given so far to help choosing which ROMs to play, so you're not left with literal hundreds to try, and after testing them out, buying your favorites.

Anyways, OP you should play Alien Soldier. It's pretty fucking hard at first but it really doesn't waste your time getting into the action, and once you get used to it you can start to just fly through.

OP was just asking for recommendations, they were asking for the best of the best and which games truly hold up. Those games will vary based on an individual's tastes, so while I don't have a problem with recommending my personal favorites, which I did earlier in this thread, the posters who said OP should emulate to determine which games they want to buy have a good point.

Nobody asked, but I never had a Genesis growing up, and therefore have no nostalgia for any of these games. I've been trying a few out on a whim. Aladdin is pretty good. The Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare was a nightmare to play. Bart vs. the Space Mutants was a bit better, I had fun with it. Beavis and Butthead seems impenetrable without a guide. Sonic 1 feels floaty as all hell (yes, I have never played retro Sonic) but it's pretty fun.

Okay....Shinobi 3, Shadow Dancer, Streets of Rage 2, Wonderboy in Monster World, Shining Force 2, all the Treasure games, Mickey Mouse in the Castle of Illusion, Fantasy Star 4, Street Fighter 2: Championship Edition, Contra Hard Corps, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Road Rash, Starflight, Sanic, and a guilty pleasure RPG of mine Buck Rogers and the Countdown to Doomsday.

That should at least get you started.

Well put, I would also add, this is one of the biggest reasons for the Mega Drive aging so much better than the SNES. The Mega Drive represented 2D arcade action at it's finest, never to be surpassed. The SNES wanted to do longer and more story driven games, but it just couldn't deliver for those types of games, and those types of games didn't start to truly shine until the PlayStation. This leaves the SNES in an awkward position where it is outflanked in both arcade action, and in story based epic adventure, leaving virtually nothing worthwhile for checking.

Yeah, I understand it was a competition in their heyday but today I don't even compare these consoles because they have such different feeling libraries. I love both (and assume most non bad-faith shitposters on here do as well) but for different reasons. They're both accessible via FPGA and cycle accurate emulation as well so there's no reason not to dip into each library. Sometimes I want ball busting arcade gameplay or arcade ports, sometimes I want a long jarpig or bing. Genesis still had jarpigs also, snes still had arcade or arcade adjacent games, just wasnt their library forte.

We need to get into the habit of just linking the /v/ wiki every time someone asks on here. Not because it's the definitive list by any means but there's so much listed there for every retro console by the time someone has worked through that full list they'll be more than knowledgeable enough to take their self-recommendations from there. Obviously there's still gonna be threads on here where we recommend more obscure games to each other but we really don't need threads where we have to tell people to go play street of rage and sonic. Actually, why isnt that shit linked in the pinned post with the other links?

I get your point... but next time just make a basic recommendations thread instead of saying you'll buy it right away and not emulate. It makes it so anyone with a brain will want to point out that it isn't a good idea to avoid emulation when it can save you money when choosing what you'll buy or not. It's really that simple, you've fucked up.

Thanks bro. I looked it up and it seems like it has some potential issues with emulation on PC, with Retroarch and other emus detecting it as xinput and being unable to change it. I'm probably not even gonna use it on my PC, but do you happen to know if that's an actual issue/if there's a fix?
