How do I get into shmups? I tried ikaruga and dodonpachi for about 20 hours and didn't understand what I'm supposed to do AT ALL besides not die and blow shit up...ok and??so I watched some shmup videos and the fans seem to think it's the best genre ever and dodonpachi and ikaruga are top tier simply because they be difficult and have good OST

Am I supposed to win without dying or using continue credits or score them, both seem contrived ways to play....I just want to have fun like in beat em ups or jrpgs which make sense instantly

>Am I supposed to win without dying or using continue credits or score them
for me, I like trying to win without dying or continues. And as I get better I can't help not caring about scoring when I die and have to start from the beginning, keeping the earlier levels fresh when replaying them.

There's going to be some major sperging in response to the advice I'm going to give you and it's entirely going to come from people who don't actually play the genre. But the only real way to enjoy the more difficult shmups is to look up a guide for the game you want to 1CC or whatever your goal is. I recommend playing a shmup that looks fun to you blind and then when you get stumped look up how others beat that part. Also you should start with easier shmups on consoles like MUSHA or Soldier Blade instead of starting with arcade games as those are way less forgiving.

Ikaruga is not a good game to start with. Trust me.

Dodonpachi is great but I'm not sure if it's a good starter game.

How verticalpilled are you considering what you listed? Some of the best intro games I know are horizontal, Gradius Gaiden, Gate of Thunder and Air Buster come to mind.

For verticals see Cho Ren Sha, Judgment Silversword, Giga Wing.

Mars Matrix on the Dreamcast has built-in guide videos. The player even dies at one point after collecting an extra life, which gave me encouragement that even someone so good could get overwhelmed. Up to that point, I believe Einhander was the only shooter I could finish.

you just described the genre yes. there's a reason it died about 20 years ago.

He described millions of games and at least five genres, you pisshead.

And the genre is doing fine. It's just not in the spotlight.

Fags like you who keep pretending that shmups are still this obscure killed-off genre fill my musou gauge, aaaa

>How do I get into shmups?

What is your purpose for wanting to get into them in the first place? Everything stems from there.

>> No.11205548

When you get stuck, don't try to develop a strategy to beat the whole game, a stage, or even a boss. Take a segment of a stage and focus on it until you can consistently clear it. Strategize, execute, adapt. You can't beat the game, but you can complete 1 minute. And if you can do 1, you can do 1 more, and so on.

Not retro but Crimzon Clover is great for getting into shmups.

Playing on 1 credit and scoring is the same thing, the only way to keep your score is playibg on one credit. After you can beat the game with one credit then you go for more sophisticated scoring or no death if you want to.
>I just want to have fun like in beat em ups
Bmups work the same way, Capcom stuff even has 1cc endings

What beat 'em ups and JRPG's do you like OP? Square made Einhander which is pretty good imo. Capcom is also known for the 1940 series, Carrier Air Wing, U.N. Squadron, Eco Fighters, and several others.

Personally I prefer cute 'em ups and older shmups over the newer ones. You might even end up preferring something like Galaga or Galaxian for their simplicity

Why would you want to get into a dead genre that not even long-time players enjoy? There are many other genres that take far more skill and are more rewarding to play, like rhythm games, RTS, roguelikes, etc. The main strategy of shmups basically boils down to pattern memorization, which is the lowest form of skill imaginable. Even superplayers recommend that you copy off of replays in order to get gud. I'm assuming the only reason you took interest is because some e-celeb told you to, which is even worse because that means you're a zoomer who can't think for themselves and needs to be told what to believe/take interest in.

Embarrassing /v/-tier thread.

Imo, best shmoops are the ones with infinite continues, but they restart you at the beginning of a level when you die. Last Resort comes to mind in this regard.

play a shmup where you respawn on the spot when you die or you have hit points instead of lives before game over. they basically play out like a normal game. the difference between a shmup or beat em up is that you have complete freedom of movement untethered by gravity.

Have you ever played Mega Man? In Mega Man sometimes you have to move to the very last pixel of a platform to make a jump, it takes some fine control of the d-pad to do that. that's basically the hardest shmup movement gets, you want to move that exact distance sometimes rapidly and in more directions than just left or right. If you know how to play Mega Man you already know how to move in a shmup, you just need to focus on that pixel tapping mentality during hard portions.

Play more SHMUPs so you can discover what games you like and which ones you don't.

Try:
Galaga
Gradius
Parodius Da!
R-Type
Soldier Blade
Thunder force 3
1943 Kai
Gunhed / Blazing Lasers

I can't figure out where to look while playing them. My eyes glaze over. Like I can focus for one set of projectiles, but then suddenly there's a second wave that I never see coming and get hit. I'm even having trouble recognizing my own character and shots on screen. If the game has those option buddies that shoot with you, that shit screws with me as well and I try to dodge my own shots.
I'm told you have to just get a feeling for your single pixel hitbox that's somewhere in a much larger sprite, and just dodge with my peripheral vision, but that just doesn't work for me. I have to look directly at my sprite and try dodging while holding down the shoot button and fire at the general direction of the boss.

It just seems like a genre I physically can't adapt to which is heartbreaking.

As we said, try earlier games, which are less visually busy, to get a feeling for the genre.

In 20 hours you could have beaten one quarter of a jrpg. But how much of those 20 hours was actual engaging gameplay versus dinking around in menus, getting lost and backtracking, scrolling through insane npc dialogue and watching cutscenes?

I'd recommend an easier one, compile games are fairly easy while having enough elements to keep them interesting.
Super Aleste or Zanac Neo (A.K.A. ZanacxZanac) would be my picks.
Hudson titles also lean more towards easy but I think they're mostly boring.
>Am I supposed to win without dying or using continue credits or score them
The generally agreed way to beat them is to get a 1CC (1 credit clear) and then focus on score or change game but don't focus too much on it, just pick one game and take it easy, you'll beat it eventually.

Shmup forums are full of losers. This isn't to say it's a bad place, but it's infested and there's several popular mentalities that are complete bogus. Just have fun with game and don't listen to these fags. Once you have your own opinion you'll learn who's full of shit.

It's really simple, just play with continues until that becomes too easy and meaningless (this may happen right away), then go for 1CC until you get tired of that (whether you succeeded at your 1CC or not), then move on to another game (and if necessary another genre)
If you ever become super hardcore as a shump fan then you can abandon the above plan and find your own path, but... you won't
