It’s still way too hot out and early for that, but I’d say Friday the 13th NES qualifies as a spooky summer game.

Muppet Monster Adventure is always a must play for me every year. Kind of a shame that it's a bit uncommon (in the states at least) from what I hear. Was developed by Psygnosis and published by Midway. It's a fun little 3D collect-a-thon platformer with tons of humor

With a little more refining, Monster Party could've been a much better game. I honestly think it's not too bad as it is, gameplay wise, and the charm of it all makes it a fun experience. Anyway,
>make the projectile reflecting mechanic more beneficial/do more damage to bosses - it's useful for quickly killing the egg enemies, but for the majority of bosses, it's much more effective to just use the held bat attack
>make dark versions of a few more levels beyond just the first; the lake level in particular would've been a great choice, almost to the point that it seems like they might've intended it to have one at some point in development
>longer/more refined music tracks - the title theme and ending theme are great, as is the password entry to a lesser extent, so the composition skill was there to have better music throughout the game; the cave theme is nice and eerie, but it feels like the prelude to a longer piece which never materializes
>maybe include another story interlude halfway through the game
There's some things which make me wonder if the game were indeed unfinished, like maybe when they decided to scrap the Japanese release, the original team stopped genuine work on it, and they just hastily edited it and patched up bugs for the US release, since they knew they wouldn't be able to release the game they originally set out to make, complete with all the parodies. Or maybe all of that was handled by a different team? It would explain garbage like picrel and the fact that the second to last level introduced a softlock bug which wasn't even present in the Japanese proto.

It's one of my favorite games just because of the atmosphere and weirdness and I've always gone back and forth on whether or not they should have had dark versions for other (or all) levels. Sometimes I wonder if only having it in the first level makes it all the more special kinda like how only having kuribo's shoe in one level in SMB3 does. I do think they should have had something unique happen in each stage but I'm not sure what. The game is very front loaded haha.

>>11195242
I'm not sure if it counts, but since the OG film is more of a horror film than the sequels, that had more of an action focus, I think this still counts... The Terminator on SEGA Genesis. It captures the dark atmosphere of the film perfectly, especially during the last level. It's a 15 minute run when it clicks and you know what to do, you get a single life for the whole thing, so it adds tension there.

>> No.11200084

>>11199651
Maybe having the lake level as completely bright does contribute positively to the overall strangeness of the game. I suspect that they perhaps intended to have more dark versions of some levels, in part because the prototype's lack of music change after the transition makes it seem like they'd just recently implemented it in that build; based on the lack of significant non-censorship/bug cleanup between the proto and the final US version, I'm guessing genuine development stopped shortly after the proto and transitioned into spitshining it as-it-was for Nintendo approval. The game definitely seems like it was some sort of passion project, given all the horror movie references and the fact that most every other game released under the Shinsei name were random licensed games. Doubt we will ever know for sure, since I don't know if any of the developers have any sort of online presence

Corpse Party for PC-98 is still excellent. I love its atmosphere and mood, the OST definitely helps, and controlling helpless children/teenagers adds to the feeling of not really being able to fight if things go wrong, you're prey, a victim, and your only focus is to flee, to escape. It's just a kind of horror that gets to me, even with simple looks and sound, playing this alone at night is scary.

I can't recommend it enough.

I guess, though I find the smaller cast, simplicity and the overall style that feels less like a 2000's anime to be better for the playing experience of it, and the horror factor. I like anime, don't get me wrong, but something about this old RPG Maker creation just feels more spooky than the PSP stuff, especially after they went for the fan service visual novel route.

It's a shame the franchise died still.
