I'm asking as a Quake fan out of pure curiosity. Feel free to list the pluses and minuses of both games if you want, I'll be happy to read it.

I personally dig the lovecraftian setting and atmosphere of Quake more, but Doom has better gameplay. I guess it boils down to whether you're a NIN or Metallica kind of person.

I appreciate the significance and importance of Quake and I recognize that it's more technologically advanced than Doom, but for some reason I'm too retarded to articulate I find Doom more fun to play

Doom for sure
Although I'd pick Duke Nukem if I could

this question is basically impossible to answer unless you specify a few things like are we talking base game no mods/usermaps, just singleplayer or multiplayer too which is more subject to opinion, as franchises or as games? not considering multiplayer because i never got into it for either, doom is the better and more consistent franchise, lumping doom 1 & 2 into one game cause they basically are i would still take quake 1 over doom, better atmosphere, music, gameplay and art direction which is the most important one for me. but quake 2 just sucks balls in comparison, i like the game design in theory with the push to be more cinematic and the open-endedness but you play half life and then q2 looks like babys first sci fi shooter in terms of encounter and environment variety, and complexity of gameplay. plus q2 doesnt even really feel like the sci fi world war it was meant to be, its a 7/10. the better quake 2 is unreal but unreal also isnt as fun to actually play as quake so in every scenario quake 1 wins, unless you consider user made content, then doom is doom and has like a billion other full games inside it which is hard to beat.

>>11175642
and i also find doom to be more fun but i enjoy quake more overall. having a bit of friction at some points with enemies more obviously designed to irritate you like the vores, spawn, even the shambler, all 3 i find more annoying than any doom 1 or 2 enemy but its thematically appropriate, even on normal you shouldnt be having a constant stream of fun without some hilarious/annoying dickhead game design in a hellscape but especially not in a lovecraftian nightmare. and because of this i find killing some vores or a group of spawn quickly and efficiently much more satisfying than dancing in and out of an archvile sightline until it dies

I prefer the levels in Quake more. Something about it just feels more defined and more satisfying. I have nothing against Doom, it's one of the all-time greats. But so is Quake.

Doom:
- Fast Paced, lots and lots of weaker enemies with fewer more strong ones (unless you're playing some kind of slaughter map), made possible by the use of sprites rather than full 3D enemies. Player feels more powerful in gunfights until overwhelmed by the sheer number of enemies.
- Great weapons that feel meaty to use, but are also fairly conventional, or conventional sci-fi for the most part
- Rocket launcher is a powerful weapon and nothing more
- Maps are fun, but tend to be (due to the sort of game Doom is) more flat and long/wide
- Great modding and mapping scene

Quake:
- still fast paced, but with fewer bullet spongey enemies that require different tactics that feel slightly slower. Partly because of the full 3D thing - which limited with the hardware at the time what they could put on screen. Gun fights feel more like a battle, and smaller amounts of large enemies can defeat you more easily.
- Weapons do feel weaker before the Super Nail Gun, even the shotgun feels quite weak, but weapons are more interestingly themed and less conventional
- Much more interesting use of explosion physics, and the rocket launcher is not just a weapon, the explosion physics lead to rocket jumping fun
- Those jumping liquid monsters which are absolutely infuriating
- Gibs, if that sort of thing makes you happy
- Maps are a bit more truly 3D - i.e. high as well as long and wide.
- Great modding and mapping scene

I've always seen them as 'different' rather than better or worse.

quake just hits different. i love the visual design for levels and monsters.
the soundtrack is good, although i think the game would work better if more of the tracks were like the title theme instead of pants-shitting ambience.
i just wish it had an extra gun or two and a few more monsters, also boss monsters for epsiode 2, 3, and 4, also an actual use for runes.

>this question is basically impossible to answer unless you specify a few things like are we talking base game no mods/usermaps, just singleplayer or multiplayer too which is more subject to opinion, as franchises or as games?
regardless of whether it's vanilla or modded i find doom more fun to play over quake.

-interms of singleplayer quake has a better level & sound design than doom but weapons feel significantly weaker than dooms and the enemy variety in quake is just boring because of it.

-in terms of multiplayer i'd disregard both and play UT.

-as franchieses? i feel like doom is where id peaked as a games company and making "more doom" is honestly the only thing they're actually good at. wolfenstein is dull, how i feel about quake can be seen above, who the hell is actually a fan of RAGE? and the last time they tried to make a commander keen game they quietly scrapped it because nobody wanted it.

>> No.11177168

Both are different enough that I don't feel like they compete as much as they complement each other. I'd probably have to go with Doom, but it's a close pick.

For me - sometimes it's a Quake day, sometimes it's a Doom day; at the moment I probably pick Quake over Doom slightly more often though if I'm honest.

The real question if we're talking base games only is what if any sourceports you use? It's pretty much Darkplaces and GZDoom for me, with occasional forrays back into pure software mode on DOSBox when I can be bothered.

Everything wrong with singleplayer Quake could be fixed by halving every maximum HP, player and enemies both. But even with bullet sponge enemies it's still the better game.

Doom 1+2+FD has the better bestiary, IMO. Simpler in a lot of cases, but also more dynamic in how they can be used without having to modify them, making for more varied combat encounters, IMO.
I love Quake's grenade/rocket launchers, they're very cool weapons with nice physics. The atmosphere and true 3D design is also incredible. Sandy Petersen I feel also hit his stride here.

I tend to play Doom 1+2 mapsets more, but I do appreciate that Quake mapsets like to improve on the bestiary, either with new additional monsters, or modified behaviour on the base ones to make them more dynamic.

>> No.11179716

I think the basic gameplay concept is more fun, 3d shooting vs 2d, but doom is better executed as a campaign, I'm not really crazy about quake's levels or its enemy roster.

Quake would be the better game except that I hate the enemy placement / level design philosophy. Almost the entire game is based on "fuck you" traps, things designed to be unfair on a first play where it's impossible not to take damage unless you know what's coming and it's everywhere and in almost every level and I can tell the level designers had a mean spirit coming up with always new ways to fuck the player. It's always designed to leave the player with low HP but providing supplies before and/or after the traps.
People always contradict this but that's the thing, by definition once you know the game, it's no longer something that is an issue or something that you even realize. Anyway being sniped by hidden grenade launcher dudes is not fun, nor is being dropped in the middle of the room with no cover and enemies on all sides, nor is it to lose most of your HP in an underwater cage you can only escape from if you know a secret place.

Thankfully the expansions redeem Quake since they're much lower on the bullshit.
