dude the snes had like 8 channels I think, and the n64 didn't work like that at all, there wasn't a static limitation to the number of simultaneous sounds as defined by the hardware - and the ps1 was completely different and not like any of those whatsoever - I mean this is a disc-based system we're talking about

I could be wrong but I think the Genesis had 6 sound channels anyway, not sure if one of those was restricted to white noise or something and so you're not 'counting' it or something

It's because the Genesis sound chip actually takes talent to code for. With the SNES, you could throw together something and worst case scenario, it'd be boring but inoffensive. While I don't have a strong preference towards SNES or Genesis, I have to say Genesis' soundchip sounds really "full" and "warm" when used well. SNES tries hard to emulate real instruments instead of going for more synthetic sounds like Genesis. Like with most imitations, it sounds kinda hollow even if the music itself is composed well. It is more versatile because of it, though.

Look, the reason why it was so hard and inconsistent for the developers to make good music is because of the way Sega designed sound for the Genesis in the first place.

I don't remember the exact details, but it was something along the lines of having to make music with a contemporary midi system, and then having to PORT it onto the Genesis. It was a harder process then making music for the SNES.

Only a few developers and Sega themselves knew how to make good sound for the Genesis. Quite frankly, it was a huge flaw and poor choice on Sega's part.

Having said that, Vectorman has a great minimalist soundtrack. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53nongiIpCw

I think it's because the initial part of a sample could have a slightly different pitch from the main loop depending on what kind of sample it was. Then lower-pitched notes would have the initial part last for a longer time, affecting the apparent pitch. A lot of devs were too lazy to correct for that.

Honestly though the main problem with SNES music is that it's just too bland. Low-quality samples don't sound that good compared to FM synthesis. It was only when ROM prices dropped and cartridges got bigger that SNES music really began to shine, when they could afford to fill the cart with lots of high-quality audio.

It's probably the high frequencies that you're talking about. SNES samples were limited by the amount of space on the cart, and most developers had to make compromises in terms of the sample rate of the audio. This meant that the higher frequencies were cut out. You could still tell what kind of instrument it was supposed to be, but it'd sound muffled like a worn-out cassette tape. Genesis music never had that problem. While it was hard to design FM patches with a warm, well-balanced sound, it'd always sound like you were hearing the raw audio and not a recording. Any decent musical arrangement on Genesis, with every instrument at the right volume level and nothing too egregious in terms of frequency content, would have that full sound you're talking about.

Genesis had two chips. The YM2612 (aka OPN2) and the SN76496.
The latter is a stereo version of the SN76489 used in the SegaMasterSystem and GameGear, with a slightly different psuedorandom noise. This ProgrammableSoundGenerator (Sega called the PSG an SSG instead for some reason) had 3 square waves and one noise channel.

YM2612 was the beefy part with 6 channels of 4op FM where the last channel could switch modes and play samples

There's also Shiru's VGM Music Maker, Delek's Deflemask. Or mic's xpmck (which is an mml compiler). I think it's also possible with vgmck, but that's soooooooooo poorly documented

I find it funny you should say that. For every one bitch about genesis sound being "inferior" 5 people always jump to the "U LIE! This games soundtrack was awesome!"

It really depends on what you do with the hardware. A stradivarius can sound like shit if someone who doesn't know what they are doing plays it.

I didn't read all of the thread, so maybe I'm doubling up here, but hearing any of these songs twice isn't going to make your day any worse.

Lets open up with an excellent example of Ecco's simultaneously chill and ominous atmosphere, "Open Ocean":

Next, the prefect driving music, delivered through OutRun 2019's "Relight My Fire". A sweet jam like this makes me want to just get in my car and drive, no destination required.

Of course, as cliché as it might be at this point, you can't have a YM2612 thread without Sonic. He may have gotten his name from his supersonic running speed, but he's no slouch in the sound department either. "Flying Battery Zone Act 2" from Sonic & Knuckles.

While we're hitting the classics, we'd be remiss to ignore Yuzo Koshiro's classic work on Streets of Rage. A pounding beat to match the pounding I'm giving those thugs, here's "Round 1"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgjlDZZjuEo

I'm going to go ahead and fanboy out by putting two Koshiro tracks in a row. The funky bassline mixed with aspects of traditional Japanese music make "Shinobi Walk" a perfect theme for Shinboi III.

I don't know the name of the actual composer, but Techo Soft has always had a way with the Genesis sound chip. "Sniper" does a wonderful job of portraying the tactical desperation of Herzog Zwei.

Castlevania has always been known for it's dark, sweeping music. While Castlevania: Bloodlines' soundtrack doesn't really play to the YM2612's strengths as much as other songs I've listed, it's still a shame that so few tracks from it were reused in a series that loves rearranging old music so much. Here's "Iron Blue Intention" from stage 4, which has been reused, I believe.

That ecco tune is awful. The ambient tunes in the sequel are way better. Especially the title song.

They realized they couldn't do high pitched sounds in it without destroying peoples ears, so they went for more deep-sea echoing bass instead.

Vectorman is famous for it's visual presentation, but one track in particular stuck in player's heads as well: "Tidal Surge"

I'm fanboying again, this time for Tecno Soft. "Hydra" form Thunder Force III pulled me into the action from the first time I turned this game on. The level's a cakewalk, but the music still makes you feel a sense of heroic urgency.

Some would argue that Phantasy Star II is a hard game for the modern player to get into. While it's a tough grind, the wonderful battle theme "Rise or Fall" keeps the hype high while I'm playing. The percussion in particular is exciting.

Not even licensed games could escape from the wonder of a YM2612 wielded well. Here's the theme to Jurassic Park's "Pump Station." You just know something dangerous is lurking in the dark when you hear this.

Alissia Dragoon's modern fame is unfortunately to be trotted out as ONE OF THE FIRST GAMES TO HAVE A FEMALE PROTAGONIST despite coming so much later than classics like Metroid and Baraduke. I think it should be remembered more for it's challenging and unique gameplay and it's fantastic soundtrack. Here's "5-2," I don't know if it has another name.

Last on the list but first in our minds are those embodiments of Funk themselves, ToeJam and Earl with "Rapmaster Rocket Racket"

Different strokes for different folks! Ecco 2's soundtrack is equally amazing, but I wouldn't knock Open Ocean. It's one song that's really stuck with me over the years, though part of it might be due to the frantic pace of the level it's attached to. The high pitched noises make me think of echolocation and aliens all in one.

Now every genesis fan's probably heard all the tunes I posted already. But if you're a fan of the sound of the YM2612, I really recommend checking out some original FM chip. It's not half as popular as the DMG or anything, but there are some great works out there on it.

Man, that best encapsulates why I still have my Genesis plugged in.

With my SNES, the music could at best be non-intrusive. With the Genesis, you would actually look forward to playing a level because of the music.

Haha, I almost did! In fact I had pasted it into the box and everything, but changed to the Pump Station because that tune in particular was more memorable to me. But Visitor's Center is also a great track.
