I've never played an FMV game but there's something I find really fascinating about them. I'm not sure why I'm so interested in them. They just seem like such a weird part of video game history.

So I'm finally going to play one but I'm not sure where to start. I was thinking about starting with Phantasmagoria because I've heard it's pretty good. I'm also looking for FMV games that are so bad they're funny. I've heard Phantasmagoria's sequel delivers on this end.

Any recommendation is helpful.

7th Guest is pretty decent, it's worth playing for historical value I guess.
Phantasmagoria is hilariously bad though. The rape scene still makes me cry from laughter. A shame I couldn't beat this piece of shit because of a bug during the atrocious ending.

The best FMV game is Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within. It's still a classic adventure game nowadays.
Tex Murphy 3/4/5 are great too.

Here's an unknown little number - Don't Quit Your Day Job, an FMV game where you play an agent trying to get one (of two) newcomer on stage at The Improv. It features appearances from Improv staff and comedians, including other newcomers at the time. It's extremely short for both playthroughs and gameplay mainly consists of trying to talk to the right people at the right time, or having to play a minigame. But it's got a decent sense of humor and is worth playing. Just don't pay too much for it.

Mortal Kombat isn't even much different than doom, they could have made that actually have FMV by using stop motion with Adrian Carmack's clay models. Mind you, the PC version of MK2 was pretty good if you could get it running with sounds and everything.

Now megarace, that really made use of the medium, except the sound during the levels was just adlib music and effects.

... if you know what you are getting into with Phantasmagoria, then you might as well check out Harvester.

Dark Seed 2 is a stunningly underrated game. It ditches a lot of the lovecraftian vibes and unexplained atmosphere of the first one for a much more cohesive story. It's really about a pathetic guy returning to his hometown, only to learn there isn't really a place there for him anymore. I wouldn't say it's amazing, but it's definitely a solid 8/10.

Dark Seed 1 is a terrible game. The only thing it has is atmosphere. Otherwise it's story is non-existent, the fetch quests are absurd, the time restrictions are impossible, and the "Dark World" is surprisingly safe considering it's an abode for hellish beings. I like Dark Seed and all, but there isn't much to it besides of Giger's stuff.

Personally I dont agree at all with that guys opinions. There is a story I managed to follow when I was in my younger teens. I never found the objective of the game wierd at all. I really dont get what he has got that from.

But hey, watching a speedrun on UT kinda takes the game out of its context. This is a game you should sit alone in the night and experiance yourself.

I wont argue anymore. At least I found it highly satisfying to play.

I have never played this but I'm really tempted to. For what I have seen it seems like a really cheesy 90s action flick FMV game with goofy nerdy protagonist etc.
Just the way I like it.

I think full motion videos are a good idea but most of these games are pretty awful thanks to hardware limitations.
I wonder if there's ever going to be a modern game with FMV that is exactly what it should be: fully interactive movie.

ROAD AVENGER
It's an FMV game where you drive fast in a car and smash shit. In your car. Awesome 90's Japanese animation, if it was done nowdays it would be cute cars doing cute things but this was the 90's so it's brutal. YOU'LL PLAY IT.
