Magical Chase was 1991. Kiki's Delivery Service was 1989.

Akira was out only a year prior. That's a narrow window for anime to become truly popular in the West.

>> No.11082269

>>11082258
I'm not sure if you realize how big the anime scene was back then. Fans sometimes traded VHS tapes or recorded copies from international broadcasts, conventions, or imported versions. Bootlegs and fansubs were pretty common.

I'm serious. There were fan clubs, and conventions, and fanzines, and mail-order catalogs. College campuses had access to VCRs and TVs, allowing them to host screenings of fansubbed anime episodes or movies. Stores in towns with large Asian populations stocked bootleg anime VHS tapes.

Though you're right, it's hard to say how much impact a niche movie had on sales of a game on a niche console.

Its probably a toss up between these games. I would need to play them all again in rapid succession to solidify my opinion.

I had an idea for a Cho Aniki boss that had a prostate massager in his ass. As he took damage, the massager would vibrate more intensely, eventually ejaculating bullets and then leading to a cool down phase.

Not a niche movie in Japan. Not a niche console in Japan. Basically they were both hits in Japan.

>> No.11084178

For a long time I only ever played the second since that was the one I had growing up. I finally played the first on emulator but I think its a much better game. They could have completely cut out the ending maze tower level though and the game would be improved for it. It is strange also how the sequel has absolutely nothing in common with the first.

Do Turbo CD games count or is it considered another console? Because if it counts since the Duo exists I would have to go with Rondo of Blood.

>> No.11084476

Counts, the only difference is the storage medium. CD-ROM2 didn't add any "new" hardware to enhance or alter the base PCE beyond the optical drive.

It's like a better designed, more controllable version of Legend of Kage, which I'm sure the Ninja Spirit team was inspired by when they were designing it.

CD-ROM^2 adds extra RAM to store data between disc and console, with Super CD-ROM^2 increasing its amount even further. I don't know if that RAM could be written to from the console's side though.
