Not a horror game, but Bucky O'hare made me nearly shit myself recently.

I've always treated this part of the game like "ride on blocks and then jump over small volcano-plant-whatevers", and it's always worked fine.
Years of just riding along, jumping, standing on the volcano-plant-thingies and waiting for the blocks to pass to the other side without any problem except falling into the lava sometimes. This has worked for dozens of playthroughs and I never thought anything of it.

Until a while ago. When the (what I always assumed was a) volcano-plant-thing suddenly grabbed me and ate me.

Original Silent Hill for PS1 would surely give you the jeebies. The low quality humming and banging ambience alone makes the player paranoid, especially when you first go exploring the abandoned streets. There isn't many jumpscares and the real fear comes from the constantly otherworldly atmosphere.

5 Days a Stanger, and especially its sequel, creeped me out as a kid. They probably wouldn't have that effect on me nowadays though.

Not retro, but Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is probably the scariest game I've ever played. I felt every bit as horrified, disoriented, frightened, and nauseous as the protagonist I was playing. A shame the game is completely broken.

Silent Hill 1 is overrated as hell. 2 is good but after the first scare there's a loooooooong way to go with just wandering streets looking for keys and having not-particularly-scary monsters try (and fail) to hurt you, followed by navigating a school where more not-particularly-scary monsters try (and fail) to hurt you.

Until you actually meet the cast it's actually quite a boring keyhunt with bad controls.

>> No.1108760

Its not overrated u schmuck. Its old and lack a little in the graphic department but for its time it was pure gold. Sound is top tier, it still is. Grafx was good. Atmosphere, cutscenes and story (for this kinda themed game) was splendid.

If I must complain of something it probobly would be the controls that I find a little clunky.

Dont forget that SH has inspired numerous newer games also.

Overrated? U really have no clue do u?

Well, you have the original release which has no auto aiming, like it was originally intended to be played. Then for NTSC you have the Dualshock version which has auto aim as well as a new (much worse) soundtrack.
Then, you have the Director's Cut version. This one has auto aim as well. In this version you can play the original game, but also a version called Director's Cut which is the game but with some differences : some different enemy placement, some different key item placement (making you go through the game in a different order), some different item placement, some new costumes. It's worth a playthrough after playing the original. There is also a mode with easier difficulty for the original game, don't touch that.

Then you have Director's Cut: Dualshock which is the same but with the newer shitty soundtrack.

If you're play you only have the original release and the Director's cut release (not dualshock).

If you want the original real experience I recommend tracking down the first release to play with no auto aim. Or, you could play the Saturn version which has no autoaim as well and which has some cool new stuff

>>1108764
I just answered for PSX as I thought you meant ON that console; but do you mean RE1 in general? cause in this case you also have the PC version which is a great version of the original (best version in terms of graphics and you can skip doors as well) but it has compatibility issues.
Then you also have the DS version but it's vastly different (even if you play the original game mode of it) so I don't recommend playing that first; UNLESS you're that kind of person who can't stand tank controls and who is afraid to feel that the game is dated. In this case the DS version is recommended because it has improvments in that regard.

Kagero II (and/or Deception II) for PS1

You play as a cute little girl named Millennia. Your mother shows up out of nowhere and order you to kill people using traps. The game rewards you for creating crazy trap combos Rube Goldberg style.

>Innocent newlywed man steps through the door.
>Vase lands on his head.
>Gets shoved off a platform by a moving wall.
>Lands on a bomb hidden in the floor.
>Gets knocked into spikes that shoot out of wall.
>Level Complete!

The next levels consist of his friends coming to avenge him and kill you. It's kind of weird being a little girl running from a shirtless black guy with a huge hammer, knowing that he's going to be impaled on a giant fish hook as soon as you press X.

When I was a kid, my best friend and I spent ages trying to beat the game. We finally got to the part where you need to panic button to climb up a cliff, and we were stuck for about 10 minutes until we searched it up and found out there was a panic button. Made the game considerably easier.

I would either go with the original, just for the original experience. Also its hella scary with no auto aim, really vamps up the "Oh shit I really can't afford to miss!" factor of survival horror.

Or Director's Cut: Dualshock. The whole game plays a lot smoother in my opinion.Hey, the soundtrack wasn't THAT bad, it was just that one butt trumpet track that really sucked.

The Super Famicom port of Famicom Detective Club Part II isn't really scary, but it's got a nice spooky atmosphere.

Nanashi no Game on the DS is also fun for a quick playthrough, and it sort of retro. I just wish someone would translate the sequel(s).

I find the atmosphere in NC2 to be too over the top and silly. It felt like I was playing a metal music video(which is probably why they put Rob Zombie music in it) as opposed to the creepy old horror movie atmosphere of the first game.

Sorry if this is a bad direction to take the thread in, but last year I tried doing a 'spooky game night' through october, as we played random spooky games. It was kind of hit or miss with how the games were, but we are inspired to try again.

What are the best scary games to play as a group? I thought that historical trip might be cool, since we already played Sweet Home last year, we could continue down the history of survivor horror with Alone in the Dark, Clock Tower, and any other notable spookfests.

What else could go on the list? Waxworks and RE, perhaps Silent Hill as well?

>> No.1110327

>>1110202
No worries, I made this as a general horror related games thread.

I would not pay attention to RE that much, as it just takes too long to get into and generally isn't scary.

I'm way to lazy to name the mass of decent horror games the ps1 has. Heres a list of 8/16 bit games that are good for your situation

Uninvited (NES) I advise turning the sound off, the music drains the game of its atmosphere.
Friday the 13th (NES) Kinda stupid, but why not?
Chiller (NES) Nasty for its time.
Sweet Home (NES) The game that inspired Resident Evil.
Clock Tower (SNES) See thread picture.
Super Metriod (SNES) Before you say anything, imagine being in a dark room in the middle of the night playing this game, its pretty creepy.

But it IS overrated.
SH2 sealed the deal and made it a franchise worth playing. SH1 is just terrible.
Terrible controls
Terrible enemies (oh no, a random zombified creature is attacking me!)
Terrible puzzle-solving (find X, go back to keyhole Y)

Hell, I found the mutant factory in Relentless more scary than half of SH1.

When you learned where to stand and how to time certain actions it suddenly became really easy. It takes some time to find out where the best positions for the character was to kill the creatures or to avoid them.

The original Journeyman Project got me creeped quite a bit. Much as I love the other games (with Buried in Time being my favorite of the trilogy) each game went further away from the creepy atmosphere. The original JMP had no smart-ass A.I. sidekick (I liked Arthur, mind you) to lighten things up a bit, certainly no chameleon suit to allow you to interact with people in the different timezones. It's a very lonely and desolate feeling game (and don't forget it's a first person adventure game was certainly adds to the vibe) which can be a bit frightening particularly, when you break the desolation with creepy ass robots.

"Out of my way, human, or die." even to this day I'm still quite a bit uncomfortable (granted, not quite as frightened though) at this part. You don't know how desperately I tried things and looked around to see if there was anyway to get successfully through the game and avoid the "Out of my way, human" encounter but, nope. If you want to get through the game you will at some point have to come face to face with that robot on The Mars Colony. Though honestly, I dreaded contact with all of the robots.

Because it's not scary doesn't mean it's not a horror game.

The unability of gamers to understand concepts such as genres and themes baffles me.

Nobody would dare to say that Friday The 13th is not a horror movie because it "didn't scare them"; but for video games you hear that all the time...

and let's not even mention people who believe horror is a video game genre
