>> No.1103995

The 3 handle design looks kinda weird but I don't really think it was that bad, it made sense since you're not supposed to hold the three handles at the same time or something.

It gave options to the developers, wheter you wanted to do a 2D platformer like Kirby, or a 3D platformer like Mario. The fact that little games used the d-pad is mostly the developer's fault, not the controller's...

Done differently. If I remember correctly, the buttons on the 7800 stick each sends signals down two lines. Both send a signal to the 2600's button line, so you can play 2600 games with them. They also send signals down their own dedicated lines for individual detection.

Using a Genesis controller only the B button produces anything on the Atari (or anything that most games would typically look for.)

If you plugged the 7800 stick on a Genesis, it would do some odd things of its own. The only one I recall offhand was hitting both buttons simultaneously would fire the super weapon and pause the game. Hitting them individually wouldn't produce either result.

Not as bad, but I never cared much for this controller either. The joystick's feel was just, weird.

Yes, but at the sacrifice of separating all of the directional buttons of the DPAD into sectional padding. These buttons are especially susceptible to getting stuck underneath the casing, and transferring to different points of the DPAD were painful.

>distinct buttons

>Almost as hard to kill as a NES controller.
This is bullshit, and I did a test to prove it. I placed one NES controller and one PSX controller under the legs of my couch, and left them there for 3 months. During this time, me and my friends sat on this couch, I had jumped on it multiple times, and had even slept on this couch for a few days. When it hit month three, I removed the controllers. The PSX controller had a large indent in it, chipped casing, stuck joystick, and smashed buttons stuck under the casing. I plugged it in, and it didn't work, no surprise. I'm not that guy, but there is substantial dirt in the crevices of that controller, and it looks like at least the triangle button has worn paint. I have PS1 controllers from the mid-late 90s that still work like champs, and the only thing that ever broke over time was the screw eyes in the handles (which has actually happened in four of my six PS1/2 pads), which just makes a little bit of the seam open up if you pull on it intentionally. A little glue would fix it (One of them is completely transparent, so I can see exactly what's not staying in place.), but since it doesn't affect the functionality of the controllers I haven't bothered to take them apart. These controllers have all been crammed in boxes, moved around the country a few times, schlepped around in a backpack that often sat in my car in both southern summer and Cleveland winter for days at a time, and not least of all were chew toys for several large breed dogs on more than one occasion. The plastic has bite-marks, but not a single button or stick malfunctions.

They made it bad on purpose so that people would buy the new version. Literally everywhere you see an XBOX it's all non-original controllers. Although I think the one on in the image might be a beta controller, I'm not sure. That's how logn it's been since I've seen the release controller

>> No.1109303

But this controller is great. The analog stick has metal parts, and doesn't wear out. Just for that it's one of the best for N64.

Nice and weighty pad too, feels long-lasting.

The only real drawback is the d-pad, which is of stiff and hard to use, but how often do you use the d-pad for n64 games?

>> No.1109310

Not...really. The Xbox controller was made for gorilla hands that they assumed every American would have. The S controller was made for the system's Japanese launch. A year later Microsoft realized how retarded their original design was so they stuck with the S instead and completely abandoned the Duke. Systems started being bundled with it. The Duke only lasted from 2001-2002. The S lasted from 2002-2005. Obviously there are going to be more Xboxes with the S controller than the original.

>> No.1109312

bullshit. Mischief Makers used it. Thought that was boss. Not the only game either.
MK:Mythologies, Killer Instinct Gold, just off the top of my head. But in any case, who gives a shit.

Also, I don't think the D-pad was THAT good. It was shaped funny because of the slope of the controller face, and never felt quite right, but was fantastically responsive. Wii is my fave D-pad ever, even if its a little small, but doesn't bother me much

There's this German edutainment console that we had for a while that had a surprisingly intuitive controller, It had a switch on the back so you could switch the joystick to the other side if you were left handed. I think it was called the V-something. Also, I fucking hated the controller of the original X-box, shit was too damn big.

>> No.1109349

I have the DOS version of this. I really have to try it!

>> No.1109350

I have to agree with you. PS and DS1... controllers are pretty sturdy, in general, but not well made as a whole. If that makes sense.

For instance, on ALL of my PS controllers, the D-pad is hard and ill-responsive, the L2,R2 buttons have all cracked and become less responsive (aside from my regular PS which is useless because I only have PS2, and the d-pad is uber shit). OH, and the analogue sticks, particularly the left one, always seems to pull to the right after a week.

>> No.1109361

Yes, the plastic at the pivot point would wear down with use. The lack of tolerance between the parts would cause to stick to bobble around and be loose. That would cause it to be unable to pull the springs along the full range of motion, and cause depreciated control.

You're confusing degrees of arc with sums of interior angles. This progression is in the sums of interior angles.
