I have an idea for a new mod:

You guys know Samsara and Naraka.
They are mods where you choose to play as a player or boss of the old retro 2.5D FPS.

But what about the regular enemies? Shouldnt they be part of it too?

And this, ladies and mentlegans, is my idea:
* You can choose an "enemy" class to play as
* There are 2 enemy classes of each retro 2.5D FPS. (E.g.: Doom has Cacodemon and Baron of hell, Hexen has that green lizard and Ettin, and so on...)
* They dont use the regular ammo like clips etc. They use the stuff of humans! They need blood, bones,guts and flesh as ammo to increase their powers.
* Weapons get replaced by "hell upgrades". They modify your DNA and you are able to switch between alternate forms, like Kirby. (E.g.: Baron can use "Cyber DNA" to turn into a CyberBaron / CyberBruiser)
* All enemies you have to fight are actually smart AI player classes of these games. (E.g.: You must fight against Doomguys, Corvus, Blazkowicz and so on. And they have different weapons)
* I dont want to make this mod as a shit Samsara copy. It should be quite unique. But I still need ideas and people who want to be part of this team.

What do you guys think about this mod? Does it sound good? Or awful? Would you play this? If not, why?

/pol/guy made a map for it that actually functioned well using the slippery floors thing. Made the drifting work far better. Again, biggest problem was the lack for vertical momentum being kept when going off ramps and what not. No ease in an out of turns either, same as Marks. And 3rd person was twitchy as fuck and contained no camera lag.

I was rather hoping something would come of it anyway after it was cracked, but it ended up being too much of a mess to bother.

Added some more new stuff to my mod of Brutal Doom. Just about every weapon but the chainsaw has a secondary now.

>Added Quake 3 style secondary fire to the BFG
>Basically behaves like plasma rockets
>Has slightly higher rate of fire than the RL
>Has slightly lower damage and splash than the RL
>Handy if you have no rockets but have a BFG and loads of cells
>Added sounds for the BFG secondary
>Some glitches with certain dangling corpse decorations being invisible is fixed


For those who don't know what my shit is all about, it's a sound and feel mod for Brutal Doom brought over to v.18. The rest of the changes are in the txt provided.

In 30 mins. I threw up something quite simple yet interesting for most of those who wanted to play Ultimate Doom with the rest of the Doom 2 monsters a-la PSX Doom

I actually went and tried it to see how bad it could be. I ended up kind of liking it. The textures and sounds are a nice touch and the levels aren't terrible.

Pretty close to what I wanted, for a half an hours work.

The shotgun guys drop double barreled shotguns sometimes, so maybe have it randomize only the existing shotguns at the levels start.

It also seemed to break the weapon slot for the shotgun/SSG.

I might also have it randomize the bigger monster later in the episodes, otherwise you'll get some pretty insane shit like pictured. Pistol vs skull-factory. Maybe have the chaingun guys only show up at level 2, and pain elementals at 3. With it being less of a 50/50 split, maybe closer to 20/80, or 30/70.

well this is fucking weird. Trying to use the new version of Samsara with GZDoom, and it crashes.
It works great with 0.29, so this kind of came out of nowhere. It's only GZDoom giving me this trouble (ZDoom works great), but the real kicker is that it's only with some IWADS. If I want to play Heretic, Hexen, or HACX with GZDoom and Samsara, it'll run perfectly. If I want to use it for Doom, Doom 2, either IWAD of FreeDoom, Chex Quest, Plutonia, or Evilution, it'll crash, saying:

So yeah. I'm confused, more than anything. I'll stick to 0.29 for now, but it's probably something that should be fixed. Maybe.

I found these really neat sniper zombies I've been playing with. I thought they had really easily dodgable bullets, so I cranked them up from 75 to 150, very very hard to dodge, but you can still see the bullets moving, albeit really fast. I thought this made them more realistic, but a little unfair for any player that would be unaware of this new type of mechanic. That's why I thought a scripted sniped marine would be a great idea so that the player got a warning before heading into sniper turf. After some toying, I managed to get a working script that when I pass through the door, the sniper "hates" this targeted marine and starts shooting. It takes a good 3 shots, so when I actually do this ingame, I'll just make a custom wormfood marine that has about 1 hp. Maybe I'll give him a custom animation of his head exploding too, hehe.

Let's compare Weasel's The Stranger with another wad--Panty and Stocking meet Doom. Both are pretty clearly "anime wads", but when you look at the two, they're drastically different in how they approach anime.

Pictured here is The Stranger.
What goes on here is rather than take anime itself, it takes the anime style--a lot of the weapons are more hand-held compact fare, some of the weapons are pretty crazy, the palette is desaturated and with more emphasis on the blues and greens, and the readme is full of information about what anime and what characters each of the weapons were based on.

It's very clearly quite unpolished and hacky, considering it's one of WW's earlier works, but it's a good anime wad because it tries takes the over-the-top and outlandish anime formulas and converts it to gameplay.

Now compare this with another horrifying anime wad--panty and Stocking meet Doom by our old friend TheBestTBM.

As you can see from the enemies, it's overall still Doom. Even most of the sprites and weapons are idtech1 weapons but with Panty/Stocking's hands MSPainted on. The author is trying to take the anime art style and port it to Doom--and here is where a lot of people mess up.
What this is basically trying to accomplish is nothing more than a late 90s Dehacked clone where their favorite character of choice adorns the title screen and the weapons behave exactly the same, resulting in a game that's baffling and maybe laughable but isn't really particularly interesting--because, well, it's an ugly version of Doom.

Anime wads can be done, but when people think anime the first thing they think of is the big eyes, bright colors, pointy hair, etc etc and not the typical stylings of anime.
Anime art + Doom = always going to fail.
Anime action style + Doom = gon' be bretty gud.

Unfortunately, making interesting gameplay reminiscent of action anime is much more difficult than taking screenshots of your favorite animu and slapping them in the hudbar, sooooooooooooooo.

What kind of advice are you looking for? Modeling, or what? What type of character? Have you rigged it? Animation advice? wut.

As far as I know nearly no one makes doom sprites in 3D. A lot of FPS's did it in the 90's but they relied on rendered shading rather than texture work, so they don't really match doom-style much. So that's the only real general advice I have. Don't rely too heavily on rendered shading/lighting. Work on textures, or paint over the individual frames later.

But I've done some sprites in 3D and am always willing to answer questions anyway.

Even my cyberrunner sprites don't match doom the closely (they're higher res, and most of the texture work isn't visible at this res anyway).

Pic related was my attempt for matching Doom style. I plan on finishing it someday. I painted over these, but you could do it all in the texture and with minimal painting-over.

Turn of texture flitering, make the camera ortographic, tons of bumpmapping and better light placement boosts textures in low-res renders. Don't be afraid to use shadows. Just make sure there's some ambient light so they aren't completely black. Use falloff materials for black/darker outlines.

I used to muck around with sprite comics when I was a kid. It wasn't much help for this, but I did learn where pixels should go. When I went to college, I got trained in renaissance painting, which taught me the importance of tones. When I was making NOLF skins, I learned how to use photoshop, and just recently, I learned to embrace using limited pallets and simple programs like asepirite. What helped me the most was just playing with this stuff, practicing, and asking for feedback so I could improve.

Not saying there's anything wrong with using rendered lighting for sprites. Just that for Doom it generally comes out matching better if you dump more into texture work rather than material editing (normal maps counting as texture work).

A more detailed diffuse also gives you better control over where exactly the shadows fall, and skin tones change.

I had an idea for a joke/balanced gameplay mod... That would make Doomguy an inner city thug.

He'd hold most (or all if it's funnier) of his weapons sideways, making them less accurate but he'd carry more ammo. This would also affect the way the guns performed. For instance when shooting the plasma rifle sideways he'd spin to the right, due to recoil, and get faster and faster.

He could pistol whip people, and run slightly faster and jump slightly higher, but take a little less damage.

Blocks should be sectors that trigger a script when hit by a projectile. Just play that KLONG sound effect, spawn some kind of breaking or exploding effect, and set the floor height to deep under the map or something.

Yo, I'm fiddling with a weapon/gameplay mod in my spare time, inspired by Doomtra and the new Shadow Warrior.

Quick check, do you prefer your weapons to be rooted firmly in realism and believability (i.e. Goldeneye weapons/most of Half Life's weapons), do you prefer your weapons to be nonsensical and outlandish (i.e. Circus 2's gut flinger, everything from Russian Overkill), or something somewhere in between?

Here's my rough draft of the sniperbait. I was talking about this guy the other day and now I'm starting him. He'll consist of one angle and a firing frame for when he fires at nothingness. His movement speed will be 0 so that he will stay in one spot and continue to fire and he will have only 1hp so that the first shot will kill him. You won't be able to get in front of him in time before he dies, so I'm not going to bother drawing the other angles for him. The entire point of him is to be the hate trigger for snipers when the player arrives into his area, then proceed to get his head blown off, altering the player of the first encounter with sniping enemies. I think for his death animation, I'll have his head explode, leaving only a wiggling tongue where it was. Hehehe.

Not entirely sure yet! Have you ever played Resident Evil Nemesis? One I've been thinking about is having this guy burst out of walls using the hexen break window script, relentlessly pursuing Lydia from level to level. You can never really kill him, he just goes away for a bit. I'd love to be able to have him just respawn in a different part of the map every time you "kill" him.
