I didn't realize Volume 3 would be all racers, I just bought it on a whim and was disappointed after owning the other two. If I recall correctly, the emulation is a bit laggy or choppy (at least on the GameCube version) for some of the 3D racers. The first two compilations are amazing though. Sonic the Fighters I think is actually included in Like a Dragon Gaiden, along with a playable Master System with some games when you get to the Daidoji hideout in Ch 3/4. It’s also backwards compatible for Xbox One/Series consoles along with Fighting Vipers IIRC so that’s a plus. Sonic R though hasn’t been re-released at all, and who knows if it will due to its poor reception/difficulty with porting it.

Maybe saying they fucked it up is too harsh. It's perfectly playable. The controllers are just very lightweight so it feels a little weird. Especially since the nes and snes mini controllers feel like the real deal 1:1. It's nothing to really impact the games at all though so at the end of the day it's a very minor complaint.

Something I found out today. Apparently in China they've been buying the Neo Geo Mini controllers, modding them to use microswitch sticks and then replacing the USB-C with a real AES connector and then selling them at a bit higher price.
It's not perfect but for people who have an AES or a consolized MVS I am sure it's welcome since actual Neo Geo pads must be in short supply.

I think that one is 2nd in the series. However, you have to look at it from a business/marketing standpoint: Sega games don't sell. So they just took the best one and got whatever they could out of it before the cost-benefit ratio plummets in terms of effort to localize and the poor social perception they're trying to piecemeal release the games as greedy cashgrabs. People already don't like Sega games here to begin with, so the US is lucky they even got one for the diminishing few in the small niche market of those that do like the games.

The place I went to had two copies on the shelf at launch, you're telling me they couldn't do that for the other collections too? A majority of the games in the NTSC-U collection are titles that only japs and weebs would care about, I thought they were trying to appeal to that demographic regardless of its size by keeping it as a relatively small release. You know what's fucking retarded and pisses me off to this day? Gems Collection has all the Sonic games from Mega Collection Plus on the disc too. They're presented as being demos, but they're the full games of course, and using cheats to freeze the timer, you can absolutely just play them in their entirety.

If the games were just regularly playable, maybe as a sort of lock-on bonus for having Mega Collection save data, Gems would hands-down be the ultimate Sonic collection possible. Yet I haven't seen any autists make it happen.
