What is the mentality of people who download whole console rom sets? Why would you bother with so much garbage in a console library when you can break it down to the gems and interesting titles.

I download the whole romset, then I make two folders, one I call the good and one I call the rest. I keep the rest because sometimes I don’t necessarily think I want to play something now but I might change my mind later, or maybe a romhack comes out and I need the rom to patch it. Also I really enjoy retro sports games but I don’t need 7 years of madden or ncaa or nhl or nfl quarterback club on my batocera box at once. So for me it’s a download once cry once and I can just copy or delete roms at my own pace, and when zoomers have a melty about Vimm getting DMCA because they can’t quit posting their faggot broccoli haircut videos about iOS emulators I just tell them it’s not my problem.

Sometimes I like going through some retro mag and read them like I was back in the 90s. Then when I see a game I really want to play I just fire it up and check it, like I was able to just buy the game right then and there.
Back then, unless it was a popular game that would be carried by Blockbuster I would have to wait for a game store to get it and hope the guy running said store would open up a box and put the game on the display TV to see how it looked with my own eyes.
So it's a huge wish fulfillment for me.

Cause it's easier to download a whole set and just play the few you want instead of hunting each individually.

I do wish romsets were less autistic and didn't include 10 different beta versions of some random licensed shovelware game.

This. It's a lot of prototype garbage with confusing names that forces you to go through them all to find the right one

What is the mentality of people who download ROMs individually? Why would you bother with individually going on the internet and searching for each ROM when you can just download it all at once and it doesn't occupy much storage and you won't have to care about whether ROM sites shut down or not.

So that when I want to play something I don't have to wade through shit and wait I can just grab it from my collection. 4th gen and earlier this works perfectly.

>> No.11002278

Having a carefully selected list of games you truly like is much more satisfying than having a million games you won't ever bother playing.

Why not? Why wouldn't I download an entire library that's so small it fits on any device made in the last decade?
>when you can break it down to the gems and interesting titles.
But like playing bad games

basically this
I create a curated folder for anything I actually want to play and this is what I copy to all my handheld devices, use to create a library in Retroarch, etc.
The exception for me is anything after 4th gen for disc based consoles, too much shovelware at that point for me to justify downloading TBs of PS1 and PS2 games.
daily reminder for any anons who are still downloading ROMs from places like archive.org - use a download manager like pyload. You'll get faster download speeds and you can just create a list of every file you want to download and queue them all up.

because if I only download one game (with all manuals etc) at a time, it makes my time spent with the game more focused. It forces me to give the game a fair chance before ditching it for something else. also I have a shitty computer with limited hard drive space

Storage occupied by tons of garbage is still a waste of space.

With the older ones like SNES the amount of space the roms take up is so trivial that it isn't worth the time to only select the ones you want.

>you can break it down to the gems and interesting titles.

Yeah, that's true for systems like PS2, PS3, Xbox, Wii... because the games are several gb, but for systems like SNES when you can have ALL the games in just a single download, then why don't do it?

What if the library has 1000 titles and you don't know it all that well? You can't be sure if you missed one.

i did it for a few smaller size game collections like sega gamegear, gameboy advanced, etc. it's fun to sometimes just randomly pick one out and try it without knowing what it is.

You might find games you'd never thought to play otherwise that are cool. It's looking at the releases of a record label directly

Why would I trust someone else to tell me which games I should find fun instead of getting everything and then deciding for myself? Your attitude is utterly surreal to me.

I used to download single roms but in the meantime all the sites that hosted them either withdrew downloads or closed down altogether. So I downloaded whole sets while I could for popular cartridge-based systems inb4 N64, I don't give a shit about this one and put my most favorite games on my flashcarts or emulators. Some people just dump the whole set and then browse through various revisions of the same game or trash like Color a Dinosaur, gorillion of sports games etc.
