1099994 No.1099994[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

Now it's time for our first attempt of Retro Game of the Week!

>What is Retro Game of the Week?
It's a get together of people who wants to play and discuss certain retro games each week with other people. Each thursday a new thread will be created for a new game, and until the new thread we discuss our current game. Discussions can be everything to personal stuff to heavy game developement discussions.

>What kind of games get chosen?
As long as it's allowed to talk about at /vr/ it has a chance to get played at some point. Right now I will be in charge of choosing games in the first weeks. Later on I will make the community more and more involved the games we choose. Giving me game tips is encouraged!

>Emulators allowed?
Play on all you want. As long as it's the same game we're playing, you're good.

>Where can I get emulator though?
https://sites.google.com/site/vrgotw/home
Or visit #RGOTW at the Rizon IRC server. The channel title will provide emulators and game for Win and Mac.

Have fun!

(PS. sorry if this is full with grammar mistakes and such. Feeling ill today.)

It's one of the most-discussed NES games in the West. There's nothing to find out or discuss, i.e. you're cruising for a circlejerk. Godspeed.

/v/ is where people say DuckTales when they hear "retro games".

One of the reason I chose it was because many people that were posting in the thread told me they never finished it.
Oh well, if you don't like the game, don't join in this time. We'll have a new one in a week.

>> No.1100013

I agree Ducktales is a bad choice, especially considering the timing with the recently released HD "remaster". I played through that and have no desire to play through the game again for a while, not being a huge fan of 8-bit games to begin with, so count me out for this week at least. Really do consider choosing more obscure games in the future so people actually have something to talk about.

Thanks for the suggestion. Next time you're probably going to be playing SMB3, though. Then Super Metroid. Seems like that. Then an RPG: Chrono Trigger.

Add Openemu (for mac only) its a single frontend that so far provides "plug-and-play" easy emulation for NES, SNES, Turbografx-16, Sega Master System, Genesis, Gameboy, Gamegear, wonderswan, among others.

You might want to create a new section under emulators for frontends, and include Retroarch as well.

Also Boxer (mac) and DOS Box (windows) for DOS games.

in my opinion Duck Tales 2 is superior in every single way, including music.

Graphics are more detailed.

Level design is more interesting with harder to find and smarter secrets. Level layout, with the branching paths, is also much better done than in 1. The power up system (with blocks that can only be destroyed with the power up, or objects to move etc) also gives way to give even more replay value to those levels and to rediscover them. Not to mention the island level, half of which changes compeltely once there is no more water.

Gameplay remained the same but was improved : hit detection is MUCH better and you do pogo jump with a single button.

Money actually has a purpose with the shop and isn't just score.

More variety in enemies and bosses have more interesting patterns.

Musics are less catchy, but they fit the levels perfectly.

I can beat the jungle level, get to (but not defeat) the boss in the haunted castle level, and get pretty far in the mines on easy. I haven't tried the other levels yet.

So, is there a "victory" screen if you beat every level, or is it just an infinite collect-a-thon where I keep trying to beat the levels with better scores and more diamonds and shit?

I don't really have much to say here except that this game is balls-to-the-wall hard and there are places where it's impossible not to get hurt as well as places where treasures show up but you can't get them (such as on the heads of suits of armor that are right up under a platform so that you can't jump on them, and when you try to smack them open they don't).

Good idea. I've been trying to reconcile something like Atariage's high score of the week club with the fact that everyone here is anonymous. This seems like a good solution.

I might like to see the games chosen by a randomizer, so we'll get stuff people haven't played and occasionally get stuck with shitty games we all rage against.

Either way, good plan.

Yes I liked it a lot. Here is my review :

I was very doubtful about this game when seeing footage and hearing the musics, I thought the art style and the musics weren't so good.

But I have to say that once playing it I wasn't disappointed it at all.
Everything is great: the art looks wonderful (everything from sprite, their animations and the backgrounds) and most of the musics are really good too. The only music which wasn't so good was the Himalaya theme because they added too much stuff to it with different new rythm and meldoies which completely hide the original melody and make it sound like it's 2 musics in one.

The game has the 5 original stages but re-vamped with new areas to make them longer as well as a new intro and final stage. The new intro stage hardly matters though because it's very short and straightforward.
Gameplay is perfect Duck Tales fun and I liked how they kept the pogo mechanic from DT2 (you don't have to press Down to perform a pogo jump).

The cutscenes are no problem. On the contrary they share the Duck Tales sprite, they're even funny at times and it's a pleasure to hear the original voice actors.
You can skip them all anyway if they really bother you.
The only cutscenes which bothered me a little was in the Amazon stage because you have to pick 8 different items throughout the stage and there is a small cutscene for each of them which is a bit too much (but again, you can skip that).

In-game play time said 2h45 after I beat it but it actually took me around 4hours. The relative shortness is justified by the low price.
Also there is tons of cool artwork to unlock if you want to 100% the game which is very rewarding (if you look at Wario Land Shake Dimension, a very comparable game, beating the game 100% wasn't rewarding at all).

This game is everything we'd hope for a remake.
But that's the only problem for me: I wouldn't have wanted a remake of DT1. I would have prefered a remake of DT2, or even better, a whole new DT game. I guess I'll have to content myself with the couple of DT2 references thrown in...

Because I was doing a blind run of this thing. First time I played it.

The game is not easy the first time you play it. Once the level memorization kicks in, it's a breeze.

I was mad because I expected a new 6th level or something similar. There was more than enough room to cram a 6th level in there.
You have to go to Transylvania thrice in the game, and repeating things in a game is something I absolutely despise.

Thrre fights with Orochi in Okami, three fights with the Imprisoned one in Skyward Sword, three times Transylvania. Damn.

Well, cleared this gem. Normal, no save-stating at all, had to re-start twice until I got accostumed to the gameplay and the level layout.

What can I say? I understand why people praised it so much. I kinda regret not having enjoyed this when I was a kid- It has a charm only the Duckverse can bring. It's well made. I'm interested in the sequel and the remake now.

Thanks, OP, looking forward to the net game on the net Thursday.

I finally beat it! On easy mode using savegames

The final boss was so much harder than anything else in the game. The other bosses took maybe 3 - 5 replays to figure out, but I had to practice the last one over and over. First I couldn't touch him, then for a stretch I could reliably tag him once per encounter, then twice and so on. After that, it seemed like they put that race in just to be shitty.

I liked the settings, graphics and gameplay, but some of the levels felt a bit off. In the Himalayas I seemed to just stumble into the final encounter by accidentally choosing the right path. On the moon, it would have been nice to know why I needed the control box before I found it. Also, changing gravity (jumping dynamics) on the moon would have been a good twist. And getting sent back to Transylvania twice seemed like a bit of a cop out.

But it was good overall. I don't normally play action games and it was fun to try something new.

What would you have chosen? Would you have been as mad if it was something like Castlevania, or Bubble Bobble. How 'bout Door Door, or something lolsobscurehiddengemrareomgwow

After one million billion replays, I figured out the bat flies as low as you. If you're jumping about, they fly up to meet you. If you jump as soon as the bat is dropped, he rises up to meet you. But if you crouch low and give him a beat he gets on your level and you can jump on his head and potentially do damage.

Not mad, just pointing out how retarded this idea is. It's not interesting to play a game everyone already knows about.

Everyone doesn't know about it. My /vr/ is Atari and DOS games. Even if the game is obvious to NESfags, it's still new to me.

I had never played it before. There are a lot of /vr/ games out there. So sorry this happened to be one you are familiar with.

We had a votation the day the idea thread was created and one guy suggested Ducktales, everyone else agreed to that idea, since , apparently, most of the people in that thread hadn't played Ducktales yet, myself included.
Every week won't have a fucking known game, you know.

It's really easy, bro. Week you see a game you have replayed a fuckton of times, week you don't participate. Simple as shit.

I would prefer not playing the same genre of game two weeks in a row. Maybe a shmup or a top down game or something.
I've been playing Thunder Force IV recently and it's pretty bitching.

Still, it's always new to someone.

My favorite threads on /vr/ are seeing people I don't know discovering things I do. Hope to never see the end of that.
