Lost.

Nintendo's Play It Loud campaign was something, man. They took a hard turn toward the weird and gross as a counterpunch to Sega's infamously confrontational marketing strategy. They leaned heavily into the Ren & Stimpy and Nickelodeon slime vibe of the era.

Most of the stuff I saw was articles and whole write-ups in Nintendo Power showing the colorful graphics, and selling this idea that we're following the journey of a kid traveling the world, getting on buses to go to his next destination, including letters written to his mom back home. That's what sold me on the game.

Ngl, I miss the risque attitude people had in the '90s and '00s when it came to ads. In fact, I miss the juvenile sexual humor from that era in general. IT was immature but in a tounge in cheek sort of way versus an offputting overly sexual kid of way or just being a pseudo-puritan that you see people act now.

They knew what they were selling, they just wanted to ape the "kid power" vibe of the 90s where being a gross little goblin was "cool." Nickelodeon started it. Back when they were a fledgling network with no money forced to air cheap anime and Canadian shows from the 1970s they stumbled onto their first hit: You Can't Do That On Television, a kid-focused sketch show. One of its running gags was that if anyone said "I don't know" green slime would pour on their heads from above. Nickelodeon stole the concept and created Double Dare, making slime and "gak" the main marketing gimmick of the entire network.

https://youtu.be/wPadzQ6n5Fg?si=5aZSpC8cgSgWBTnc

And so you had an entire decade's worth of gross out humor.

It's not even that I don't get the concept of not talking about it all the time (like around kids, at church/work, etc). It's just the weird overreaction people have towards sexual things clearly meant in jest or just risque but not outright degenerate. It's like they never got past that phase as kids where the opposite sex is icky.

I have no idea how this happened because I remember the 2000s being full of these types of jokes and even the early 2010s. It's like social media not only makes you retarded, but it makes you mentally regress as a human.

>> No.10998394

>>10998353
Not going into politics too deep, but the only reason the US is the cultural center of the world is because the Europe was pretty much ruined after WW2 or in Soviet hands. The only two continents to make it out relatively unscathed was North America and Australia and even then, only the US had the capital to fix Europe via post war loans, which gave it a lot of influence over the region. That's the only reason America is the cultural epicenter of the world: just monetary influence, not any deep understanding of other cultures.

It's really scary how little their own history most Americans know. I get not knowing every war/battle/election/social to an autistic level of detail, but a basic crash course of history should be a civic requirement to vote or hold office. Same with knowing about other major cultures in Europe and Asia. I don't get how a functioning adult in the Information Age doesn't have the impetus to learn shit like this as he needs it or sees fit, especially in the age of globalization (for better or for worse).

I was enthralled the first time I saw this in a magazine. Turns out the advert was better than the game itself. Say what you will about Working Designs but they knew how to sell you on a game. True the art is doing a shit ton of the heavy lifting but the formatting is also really solid. The way the screenshots are laid out and the three line flavor text that makes the games seem like they're going to be an epic adventure that rivals the best fantasy films. DD raw really is raw to play - honestly the series never should've been let out of the hands of reflections. The first two games have some great music in them (and 2 has an actual thrash metal album done by a local band that never went anywhere - the songs in the game are virtually the only surviving part of the album minus a couple vocal tracks that aren't in game).

Yeah, and now we're being subverted from the inside by Cultural Marxists. Former KGB agent warned about this very thing happening. Commies lost the cold war so they decided to fight the longer culture war instead. It's subversion of our values, nothing is allowed anymore.

What I think a lot of people who didn't grow up in the 90s don't understand is just how much "lol so random" comedy had the culture by the balls. Mel Brooks was still making movies. Spaceballs was 1987 and then Robin Hood Men In Tights landed in 1993. The Naked Gun franchise and Leslie Nielsen himself were very popular. Shit, Pauly Shore was a leading man.

This is the American Chrono Trigger TV commercial:
https://youtu.be/AYQeITtzRl0?si=Lga8sD8RkmYZzpKt

It's literally just the Japanese one with bullshit subtitles. Absurdist tangents and total nonsense were all the rage. It's why Kenny dying every episode in South Park and everything about Family Guy existed. Shit didn't have to make sense or connect to anything. Just random zaniness out of left field was considered funny.

I remember seeing this ad in an issue of GameFan and being enthralled. I loved time travel, I thought the Epoch was cool, I thought Lucca was cute, and holy fuck is that a frog? With a sword?! Sick.

It's weird that I never asked my parents for the game, though. I don't think I even knew it was an RPG, and I probably wouldn't have liked it back then anyway, but I think I at least had the notion that this game was above my head.

No, that's absolutely true.
Marketing execs in the 90s knew jack shit about video games except for the few bullet points the dev told them.

>> No.11018359

>>11018339
Nope. That's factually incorrect and not how advertising works. Execs are given a FUCKTON of info, typically even a copy of the game to play. But they only latch onto what they think is going to help sell the game which, in the 90s, was gross-out/x-treme crap, especially in cases where the game itself was some cutesy Japanese stuff that wouldn't overtly appeal to western players unless you put some kind of twist on it.

>> No.11018421

>>11018359
>execs are given a ton of info
>so the actual team making the ad can choose not to use it
Hyperbole aside, that kind of treatment was pretty unusual.
More often than not, they'd be given a list of headline features and talking points along with a press kit (a collection of art assets and in-game shots, maybe some footage of the game being played). That's still how it works now, in fact.
Companies were very protective of their work, and typically weren't giving up a pre-release copy of the game to a fucking ad agency.

They're good ads, in that they sold a product. But let's not pretend they're at all indicative of the product they're selling.

There's something special about these kinds of ads. You get the feeling that whoever made them knew nothing about (if not flat out disliked) videogames, was given a plot summary and a few screenshots, thought the game sounded retarded and beneath him, and so he made an ad which reflected that. Ignore almost everything about the game itself, and just make an ad that boils down to "this shit sounds so kuraazy and stupid, but I bet you dumb kids who actually play this garbage will think that's a positive, so here you go, enjoy your brain rotting digital toys."

I believe its possible to still get away with ads like these. Biggest issue is when the company relies on Tw*tter, T*mblr and potentially Yout*be audience and influencers for feedback, which causes big entities like shareholders, sponsors and other companies giving bonus funds like Bl*ckR*ck. Sadly ignoring those factors is too much for every company these days.

Nah it was just how boring it looked to kids, I rented games from a local owned shop as a kid and always picked up RPGs, when it released I was a regular so the owner was always telling me about stuff he just got that he figured I'd like. So he shows me earthbound one day and my first thought looking at the back was "I'm already a kid why would I want to play as one?" I wanted cool knights, and whacky future tech sci-fi RPGs not one about a kid walking around a suburban neighborhood.
My dad convinced me to try it anyway so I did and I instantly fell in love with it after playing, but I imagine most kids felt the way I did and skipped it altogether I would have skipped it myself if my dad didn't nudge me to try it.
He's also the reason both me and my cousin own a physical copy, he bought us each one later because my cousin fell in love with it also after visiting when I had rented it.

>Square's hardware jump from Nintendo to Sony in the mid-90s garners a lot of discussion. There's kind of a zietgiest about what Final Fantasy VII might have looked like if it ended up as a Nintendo 64 game. It's fun to watch the old SGI demo with Terra, Locke, and Shadow. Sometimes voices on N64Brew speculate if the PlayStation game could be ported to the Nintendo 64.

>Here I've taken a MIDI track from the PC port and compiled it into a Nintendo 64 ROM. SGI's Audio Library utilizes MIDI playback, so the sequence was more or less interchangeable. It's playing with the default compressed soundbank provided by Nintendo (which Squaresoft likely wouldn't have used) via NuSys and the n_audio library.
