I bought a Miyoo Mini Plus and a RG35XX because I couldn't decide between them without trying them both. That's all. I didn't even buy a RG35XX Plus when that came out, even though it is a strict upgrade that fixed my biggest/only real issue with the original model (the dpad).
I am thinking about buying the RG35XX SP when it gets a revision though, because the GBA SP was my favorite handheld ever. (Hopefully it gets one that fixes its main issues)
Mostly, I just follow the scene. I'm waiting for the perfect RP4P + RG556 hybrid that has a little more power at that price point and none of the issues, then I'm out.

Always replace all microSD cards that come with ANY of these devices, that's the default.
I haven't changed the batteries but I also haven't been an idiot who lets them fully discharge/drain. I have manually updated the firmware though. It's a gamble on what firmware yours will have have but it's as easy as any other handheld to update, which is mostly for GBA and SNES performance improvement but supposedly does something to help the stock battery not explode too.

The wireless controllers have a different plastic, texture, weight, etc to them because they're recycled from Data Frog plug-n-play famiclone TV consoles. It's kinda in the same boat as the FF spinoffs that were accessible, only it wasn't done by SE.
I get it tho, handheld wise there weren't a lot of great offerings for RPGs or JRPGs. You had SaGa and like....Mana 1.0 lmao and even then SaGa is the one that remains for gameboy until Pokemon swept up.
By the time GBA rolled around SE were releasing ports too aside from sword and your only other options were like...last bible/SMT/DC.

I'd still give baby's first handheld RPG to pokemon hands down.

Handhold bros, is anyone aware if these cheap universal USB charging cables will be good for my DSi LL I'm getting next week? It being Japanese I wont be able to use the Japanese charger. Gonna receive it like 1-2 days before I go on vacay so I wanna make sure I'm able to charge it and continue my Pokemon LeafGreen journey on the go. I've used one of those to charge mine several times and seems fine, but I try to use the real charger when I can because I don't know how exact the voltage is. For example I got a cable that has USB on one side and DS / DSi / GBA-SP on the other. I doubt it outputs the prefect voltage considering I looked at the proper chargers for each console and they vary around 4.x - 5.x volts.
So if you want your battery to last longer or have no issues I recommend getting a proper charger.

Use an official charger if you can, if you can't spring for one then they'll do.

It's amusing seeing these comments. Back when they came out everyone (on the internet and people I knew) was swearing that they were such amazing RPGs, gotta check them out, etc.
After starting the first one you get introduced to the most generic companion girl and then the most generic plot happens, it also doesn't help the graphics weren't good. Maybe technically impressive but they never sat well with me.
So I figured everyone was singing praises because there was literally no other RPGs to play on the console.
Luckily the Final Fantasy games got ported so people could play something good later.

I'm glad I got my RGB30 early and didn't get the colored buttons. I've also never had to pull my battery and I've let it go to 0% many times. Golden Sun is an archetypical game even though it didnt set any of those archetypes. It has everything you expect from a JRPG. There is basically zero subversive energy in it. Even Dragon Quest dared to play with expectations by doing double "is god the bad guy" twists with something like DQ7.

Got an SP in yesterday and its seems pretty good. The buttons aren’t as hard to press as reviews claim and Minui is pretty great definitely prefer it to the android front ends that I use for android devices. Its a bit more portable than my trusty pocket so maybe it can replace it as my travel handheld though I’ll have to wait for a sunny day to see if it can stand up to daylight

I'm running the stock OS. It works perfectly fine, and the CFW that's been suggested doesn't look like it bring enough to the table for me to bother installing it instead. It's honestly why I haven't bought any chinkhelds for myself in about three years. I've been tempted to get a RG35XXH for a while but the d-pad is a deal breaker, the analogs are shit, and there's no kernel patches provided so CFW is ass.

RK3326 devices were peak and you can still get a shitty R36S for $25, the cost of a pizza, and put AmberELEC on it. The RG351V is even supported upstream in the linux kernel and there's mesa drivers for the GPU if you want it.
