1097932 No.1097932[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

Alright, since the old thread went down the shitter I just deleted it.

Now, I'm planning to give this all a start tomorrow and it will be going on for a week. After that we will have to see how everything turns out. As for the game I haven't decided yet and thought I might ask for some input here.

So far as for a first game I'm looking at either Ducktales or Lost Vikings. There were some people that asked about Duck Tales and it turns out that a lot of people didn't bother finishing it, I felt it might be a good fit.

Lost Vikings on the other hand might easily last the whole week and make room for really good discussion.

What do you guys think? I'll make a decesion before UTC +2 21:00 today.

>> No.1097936

I've never played Duck Tales and I played Lost Vikings with my friend when I was younger. So, with that, I say Duck Tales.

Alright, I guess I have to explain why random sucks, imo.

It's because it's.. random. Let's say people have suggested 15 games (i already have 10 and this haven't even started), and I use a randomizer. What might we end up with? Probably A LOT of snes since that is such a popular console. Sure, we might like the randomizer the first time, but by the time it fucks up (and it will) everyone will just be disappointed. This is why I prefer to just read the thread and see what people are into at the moment, and also have some control over what kind of console that gets chosen. An example of this is pretty much Ducktales. It got mentioned so much in the thread before this one that I decided to go with that instead of what I had in mind at first. So this isn't necessarily about me just saying what I want, but about someone just having to make a decision. Sometimes I might make use of polls, but not every time.

I know this might come off as silly, but it's going to bother me if I don't have any control over what's going to happen in this. Since I don't want to be a dictator, I'm going to base my decisions of what kind of discussions are going on in the threads. If people are disappointed by a game selection or something it feels better knowing I can take the blame instead of just pointing fingers at the randomizer.

puzzle/misc? really? have you ever played Archon?

it's set up like a chess board, so there's a strategy element, but your pieces battle so it's kinda action/fighting, and you can also cast spells to heal characters, bring them back from the dead, change the flow of time (the board's color changes to give strength to either the light side or the dark side), and even summon elementals. i don't think "puzzle/misc" really does it justice.

yeah, that sort of thing can be worked out later, but for the moemt this seems to be working fine.

To be honest, virtually any retro game that isnt SMB3, Chrono Trigger or Doom is fair play.

I reckon something like

platformer: ducktales
puzzel: Archon?
Point n click : ?
RPG: King of the Dragon Pass

and thats a month of high quality video games, and hopefully something approaching a gameclub community formed.

in addition, I think we should try and keep the games as far away from JRPGs and other long as fuck titles as possible. We want games anyone can dip into. Marble Madness is another option, for a classic game many of us havent played.

Actually, when it comes to collection of games, does anyone here have good experience with Sega consoles? I was browsing through some games and realised that I don't really know any obscure ones. Overall I wouldn't mind having a partner in this.

Blake stone needs to get more love those games are awesome. Not OP, but I did some research to come up with preferred emulators to use for Duck Tales.

First I checked around and found that Nestopia and FCEUX are the best reasonably high accuracy (or perhaps highest accuracy period, but still certainly usable) NES emulators. My impression is that Nestopia has been king for a long time. It's open source and got ported to pretty much everything. It hasn't been actively developed for years though, which has left room for FCEUX to take over. It's possibly not as quite as accurate, but it possibly wins out on features.

Next I checked out their availability. FCEUX is downloadable in binary format for Windows at http://www.fceux.com/web/home.html.. FCEUX doesn't seem to have any obvious binary versions available for OSX, but is installable through brew. This is less than ideal. Nestopia is available in binary from http://www.bannister.org/software/nestopia.htm.. Also available is the Emulator Enhancer plugin from the same page, necessary for gamepad input. GFCEUX is available in Ubuntu repositories, so I went with that for Linux.

(continued)

>> No.1099440

>>1099439

Next I installed them. FCEUX on Windows 7 was painless. Nestopia + Emulator Enhancer required a small amount of manual folder movement (the plugin folder goes into ~/Libraries/Application Support), but it was only a slight inconvenience. I use Gentoo, so I compiled GFCEUX from source (not by hand). Normal Linux users will have similar, quicker options.

Finally I tested each emulator with a Sixaxis gamepad via USB and went through the first level of Duck Tales. Actually, for Windows I didn't feel like fucking with drivers, so I played with keyboard. FCEUX ran real nice (it's a 2nd gen I7, so I guess it probably would). Nestopia on the Mac took a strangely high amount of clicking to set the gamepad controls, but it was straightforward. Duck Tales ran slightly less than perfect, but absolutely playable (Mac is Core 2 Duo with tiny 2GB ram, so it's already choking on the OS anyway). GFCEUX on Linux made it super easy to configure the game pad. Best interface of the three, actually. The game ran with maybe some very very minor chop, but again still absolutely playable (Linux box is higher end Core 2 Duo).

Based on these tests, I feel confident recommending all of these choices for their respective systems. If anyone has any arguments against, this would be a good time to discuss.
