visually it's a bit different from the wonderswan version because it's a little stretched out but that's about it really, very minut load times compared to the other ps1 ports. that said, ff2 origins forces you to play in easy mode for some reason, you unlock normal mode though. dunno why that's the case when it's not in 1 but from what i could tell the differences weren't too substantial, so yeah go play origins it's fine.

>> No.10979862

>>10979831
I don't believe there is any difference between easy mode and normal other than the fact that in normal mode you can't run, and auto-targetting is turned off. Both of these things can also be toggled off in easy mode. It's just some kind of "HOW THE DEVS INTENDED IT" forced on (You)

I get told not to play this version a lot, but I'm definitely not playing the NES version, and the Pixel Remaster I'm iffy on.
Is it worth playing through? The main complaints I hear is that it lags, like other SNES games on PSX.
I've seen people say it adds roughly a minute to load times which is like whatever but builds up to 1 to 2 hours over the course of a playthrough, seems like a steep time investment to just watch load screens.
Never played FF1 but I really want to and I'm conflicted on which version to play.

Gameplay wise PSX versions of 1 and 2 are the most faithful to the NES versions + tons of bugfixes. They also sound great, look great, and have some extra cutscenes that are pretty cool (especially 2).

Literally the only differences in gameplay are things you can turn off if you want, and in 2 IIRC you have a slightly bigger inventory. However the inventory in the OG was really small and by the end of the game it's half full with key items that have become useless that you can't get rid of it, so having it a bit bigger is really a godsend.

I still prefer the NES versions myself because I'm a massive NESfag but the PSX versions are great and one of the few remakes ever made I could recommend to play over the originals >>10976416

DQ3 SFC, DQ4 PS1/DS, DQ5 PS2/DS. Pretty good track record overall until the 3DS era.

It's fun to play but the cutscenes being low-budget dogshit really bring it down.

It has the option? I looked it up but the gameplay footage I saw didn't whiff and I didn't find anything about it being toggleable. Not like it's a total dealbreaker without that but I do like that extra bit planning it requires of you. Guess I'll check it out, then.

it is literally fine dude. the internet has way overblown its quirks. im playing through every ff for the first time ever and just finished 1 on the nes, and I legitimately don’t know what most of these fools are complaining about.

Can't say it's a good remake when it's missing characters and maps. I will say, however, that the shorter duration of book 1 allows you a lot of freedom in how you build your team, and that's a plus, in my opinion.

Mystery of the Emblem in general is peak classic FE formula. Shame the orb fragment system basically only appears here, it also allowed you to make any shitter viable.

If you don't want to play the NES just don't play the game. The remakes completely mangle the original design, they're just FF1 skinned generic jrpgs, not Final Fantasy anymore.

There are multiple videos out there explaining why these games suck ass. It's basically all because of how much they gatekeep certain Pokemon. The engine the game uses is really good though, which is why you should play romhacks and never the actual FR/LG game

The biggest problems with this are move availability and balance changes.

By being forced to keep the TM list from RSE, the player loses out on certain moves like Bide and Water Gun. Which may not sound horrendous, but those TMs were clearly thought out and placed at an ideal point in the game. You have a reason to use them for their immediate utility, and won't feel fucked over when you eventually replace whatever member you taught them to. They're perfect introductions to the TM system.
Some TMs were thankfully carried over as Move Tutors, but often have no logic behind their availability (Mega Kick and Rock Throw being obvious examples). And some like Explosion and the OHKO moves don't show up at all.

Balance-wise, things get worse. The game wasn't designed with Dark and Steel types in mind, so their inclusion fucks things up in strange ways, like Magneton being made astronomically better by having newound resistances and defense, and Bite being Dark absolutely demolishing Pokemon Tower and Saffron Gym thanks to it's fairly liberal distribution when it was Normal.
Abilities take their own toll, with examples like Levitate making Weezing immune to its most common weakness, and Flash Fire negating any threat from Blaine if you bother catching just about any Fire type (Water Absorb is suspect too, but less immediately abusable due to when you get access).
There are also certain Pokemon that just don't have a place anymore due to changes in the battle system. Critical hits being tied to Speed made members like Persian invaluable, but without that it's just another middling Normal type. Tauros similarly is not nearly as useful as it was, and now hardly justifies its scarcity. And Bug as a whole was made far worse by losing it's effectiveness against Poison, it has next to no utility.

tl;dr
RG was balanced around its own systems, and almost no attempt was made to rebalance around the vastly different systems of the remake.
