>basically requires autofire to succeed
>almost no chance of recovery after dying, outside of a few very specific sections
>90% of the game is just sitting on the very bottom of the screen
>your bullets, enemy bullets, medals, and even oftentimes the terrain are the same color
>can only see about 2/3rd of the screen at any given time
>scrolling over at the wrong time instantly sends an unavoidable sniper shot right at your ship instantly fucking up your run
How did this become the face of shoot em ups in the west? I know pretty much no one was actually clearing this in western arcades.

Because it played like the Toaplan shooters that were popular before it, except it was more impressive in a lot of ways.

Raiden feels like the euroshmup version of classic Toaplan

>> No.10953368

I bet a lot of yuroshmups ripped off Raiden specifically.

>> No.10953389

I've been autistically binging shmoobs for the last few months after never really playing the genre, and the Raiden games might be the only ones I've tried so far that were genuinely just bland and annoying to play. Feels like the bread sandwich of shmups and I want to eat glass every time I have to deal with a powerup in Raiden DX

>> No.10953394

>>10953389
they're bullshit and have some questionable design decisions but far from bland imo.

I love Raiden - Raiden II in particular.

>> No.10953407

my pizza place had raiden 2. i thought the fully charged purple weapon that was like a magnetic laser was so cool. i dont think it was actually the best weapon. i remember renting a snes raiden game and being disappointed it wasnt on there, and then renting the ps1 game where it was i think. raiden in the arcade was a totally different experience. the sound had a lot to do with it. it made the game feel much more premium

>> No.10953521

Raiden games look really cool but something feels off about them, like your ship is a little too slow. I have the PC Engine version and I’m absolute shit at it but it’s fun to pick up and play every once in a while. I’d say it’s a firmly mid-tier, not great, not bad.

>> No.10953530

If you can't one credit clear Raiden, then you need to git gud.
Top kek.

>> No.10953574

Raiden is brutal for the reasons someone else mentioned, I still have a thing for it, it feels epic as fuck, and the music is infuckingcredible. I can't believe it doesn't get mentioned more. 2 in particular.

It's clearably without auto, 2 is the bullshit one.
Raiden is basically a toaplan clone with less lives.

Memory dump time:

Mid 90s, I am about 10 years old. I stayed at a hotel with my father for about a week and the hotel had put some money into setting up a really nice games room for the kids. Daytona, time crisis and about 5 arcade cabinets one of which was Raiden 2.

One night I'm there after dinner playing Raiden 2 which had become my favourite and the son of the guy who owned the hotel comes in puts a dollar in the machine after I was finished with it and was unstoppable. Must have had endless nights to practice. I stopped what I was doing to watch and he gave me advice to beat the game.

I've loved games like this ever since, even as they declined in popularity.

>PC Engine version
was hard enough that they give you 6 credits to beat it

there is also a "cheat" where if you continue on 0, you get some powerups

Demonstar ripped of Raiden in more ways than one, an American Euroshmup.

The Playstation 1 had Raiden DX, probably the best version of Raiden released on a console.

Raptor for DOS might've lifted it's art style from Raiden too.

Looked up Demonstar. Holy shit why do so many euroshmups have momentum?

Raptor and Demonstar are from the same developer, Scott Host, he is active and planning to bring the series to Steam and GOG, his YouTube channel has daily livestreams of him improving the classic games and should be out very soon. A new raptor is also in the works.

Has anyone here played the Android/iOS Raiden collection? It's a lot of fun. It comes with Raiden 1 and all the Raiden Fighters games which is an interesting choice. Why not Raiden 2?

>> No.10959071

The PC Engine CD-rom port has one of my favorite OST tracks in any video game. The level that it plays in was exclusive to that version.

Nah R-Type is the most famous STG of all time and that's what a lot of Euros tool from hence why many are also horis.
If they took more from Raiden they would know the fun is in how flashy it is.
>>10953308
Good promotion and it had great music and cool jets, all the right ingredients to get people to dump credits into and for operators to buy one.

Nice get for a nice story.
Yeah. Ironically gaming moved away from communities and sharing information.
It also feels bad that people are so focused on the clears for clout that they forget to enjoy the game.

>> No.10960213

the difficulty is actually pretty fair if you learn a route, I got to the 4th loop when I was a shitter at the genre. Japanese players can loop it all day and night without sleeping so there's no excuse, but if you dont like that style of shmup just play something else. simple as

>> No.10960216

>>10960213
>all day and night
exaggeration since the bullets get stupid fast but point remains

>> No.10961428

>>10960213
>I got to the 4th loop
shut the fuck up shitter, you couldn't even beat the first loop, and the second loop is like 5x harder.

>Japanese players can loop it all day and night without sleeping
No, they can't. Raiden second loop is harder than Raiden 2's second loop and the rank keeps increasing, and by loop 4, everything is basically hitscan. The arcade archives port (tons of Japanese superplayers play those ACA ports) has only a couple who beat loop 3, and none that beat loop 4.

>> No.10961431

>How
Because the game was glorious in 1990. My arcade had the raiden machine next to the final fight machine. At that point in time those were the hottest two games on the planet.

Because it's fun. I'm not very good at it but it's a classic.

Demonstar is the most shameless Raiden clone I've ever played. I still like it though.
