I've started playing this recently, and find it rather fun and atmospheric. What does /v/ think of Nightmare Creatures? The N64 version seems to be a pretty high quality port, aside from the fact the FMV has been replaced with scrolling text.

Never played it. Don't want to. I saw ads for it in magazines, and read reviews. In my mind i have this idea of what the game is like. I know it'll never match that though, so I don't want that illusion shattered.

>> No.1095101

Such an awesome game, I loved using the cheats so you could be the monsters. I remember liking it's sequel as well. I've only played them on the psx.

Rented the PSX version I think it wasn't too long after ff7 came out. Was pretty sweet for the time. Wonder how well it aged though.

Might have to download the PC version now...hmm

Does anyone know the differences between the N64\PS1\PC versions? I know that that N64 version had some changes made to reduce the difficulty and allow more exploration, and the graphics were improved. But I can't find any details about the PC version compared to the others.

I don't know, but I'm feeling like I'm talking in /v/ when I start talking about gafix and comparisons here. Just try the PC version, it's got better reviews.

They were released the same time PSX and PC versions. Would guess they were about the same game except maybe a bit of difference in the graphics. Sony not believing in perspective correct texture mapping at the time.

Order of release PS1 > PC > N64.

According to Wikipedia:
>While the PlayStation and Microsoft Windows ports were essentially the same, the Nintendo 64 version saw a handful of minor changes. Given the limited storage capacity of the N64's cartridge system, all full-motion videos were removed. Brief segments of scrolling text are used at the game's start and following each level to advance the plot. The platforming elements were made much easier in the N64 version, and the health-depleting adrenaline meter could also be turned off in the options menu, allowing players to explore the environments at a more leisurely pace. According to IGN, control-wise "everything does feel improved over the PlayStation version." Also graphically, the N64 version of Nightmare Creatures looked more crisp, clear and detailed than the PlayStation version, without the pixelization and texture-warping.

So basically, the PC version is exactly the same as the PS1 version, sans texture warping. The N64 version had the FMV removed, and some minor gameplay improvements, but is most likely almost identical to the PC version.

They all seem to be quality versions, and it comes down to personal preference.

The gameplay reminds of Castlevania, or ODT, mixed with a bit of Shadow Man. The combat seems to center around blocking until the enemy shows and opening. Trying to slash everything to death blindly will just get you killed.

Awesome game and one of my favorites. Great soundtrack, cool monsters and atmosphere, mixed exploration and combat. It just worked.

Only problematic thing was the controls. Other than that, its fucking ace.

I think it's absolutely horrible and one of the worst games I ever played when I was younger. It's the only game I've ever actually returned the same day I rented it because I had no desire at all to keep playing it.

The US version has Rob Zombie music in it for some reason. I was personally turned off by the fact you can't play as a female, like you could in the first game. (Or at least that was my impression.) I prefer to play as a woman in games like this.

That aside, NC2 is a more polished game.

I remember back when gamecrazy was around they sold all sorts of old games. They had a deal with N64 games where you bought 2 and got one free. I bought Pokemon Stadium and Beetle Adventure Racing and I was gonna get Stadium 2 as my free game as it was a 24 dollar game and I wasn't about to pay that.

But of course my sister went along with me and insisted that I get this one. The label was super torn and it didn't look like my kind of game but against my wishes I get it anyways.

Turned out to be one of the best N64 games I had ever owned.

Well, the PS1version might be awful, as you say, but I've only played the improved N64 version - and I found it to be pretty decent.

It's sorta like Operation Winback. Bit rough around the edges, but solid 3rd person gameplay.

Doesn't this game have a fucking time limit for each level?

I hated this game. The demo on PS1 was fucking awesome and I used to play it over and over but then I got the full version, fuck it was crappy as hell.

Nightmare Creatures 2 was much worse...goddamn what a glitchy fuckfest.

There was a meter that you had to refill by killing monsters, yes.

If the meter reached zero then you started to lose health because of poison. Every kill gave you max Adrenaline (what the meter represents).

So yeah, the game had a time limit. Sort of.

Dude, I was crazy about Operation Winback when I was a kid.

Did any other game have the intrinsic cover mechanic before it, or was it the pioneer for that kind of gameplay that's now found in titles like Gears of War, Kill.Switch, etc.?

Liked the combat system but I preferred the atmosphere of the original game more. The original had a creepy old horror movie vibe to it while the sequel felt like it was something about out of a Rob Zombie music video which is why they probably put his music in it.

>> No.1098892

Ah, Nightmare Creatures. I played the first one on PS1 a lot, but never got too far in it. Last Halloween or so there was a NC thread and I ended up volunteering to stream the PC version, but the Spitalfield boss was buggy as shit and unplayable, so it never happened.

Some other TPS games had experimented with cover systems before. MGS, for example, let you take cover against objects. However, Winback did pioneer the "pop out from cover to shoot" mechanics, as well as the use of a laser sight for aiming. (This was later copied by Resident Evil 4.) Winback didn't invent all the techniques it used, but it was hugely innovative and influentual on later games, such as Metal Gear Solid 2.

It seems to work okay with Glide64. However, the game still has a problem with Project 64 where it freezes occasionally, and you have to tap F2, the pause button, twice to unlock it. Also, the game has speed synch issues in PJ64. The menus feel as if they're on drugs or something.

I agree. NC 2 was fine, but the first one had that "something" more. As you said its probably the atmosphere. Also better monsters.

And probably better soundtrack too.

I have very fond memories playing this game during winter as a kid. Go outside and play in the snow, then play some NC on PS1 with all the cheats on.

The best cheat was the dismemberment one where pretty much every hit took off a part of the monster.
