What's the best d-pad of all time?

We had this debate already.
Consensus is Super Nintendo for cross shaped one, and Sega Saturn for circle shaped one.

Was going to say say SNES, it's proportionally perfect, but now that I think about it it has caused pain after long sessions. I think the plastic might be slightly harder than is ideal.

The original Game Boy's d-pad is probably the least irritating one I've used. I like the slightly concave shape and little grippy ridges, wish it carried over to future models.

This.

It really comes down to preference, do you want a cross or a circle/disk? If you can pick that, then the choice within those categories doesn't really change much. Of course, you could argue for the PlayStation's unique style, or a modern take with the circle on XBOX, but mostly it's SNES/Saturn.

P.S. I love the 8BitDo M30's one, it's superb.

One thing I remember about playing LoZ is that you could only move in cardinal directions, no diagonals. If you hit a combination of two directions, it would take one direction, not both to move diagonally.
The reason this matters to me is that numerous other Dpads have cause an issue with movement because they were more prone to tilting, which would cause unwanted inputs, even if the tile wasn't the dominant direction you were pressing. In a game that allowed 8 directions, you would probably veer diagonally, but in LoZ it would read the other input and fuck you up, causing you to probably run into a Like Like.
The NES controller, never gave me any issue that I remember.

I get why many dislike it, but to me I can see the benefit of having individual buttons, and of that traditional system with a single piece, Sony just takes both and gives us the benefits of either, it seems benefitial to me, and the feels is superb.

same issue though: if youre doing a lot of circle type inputs it can be absolutely brutal
i was running through sotn on my PS3 the other day, playing richter. richter has a lot of command inputs for his specials. only a couple hrs and i could already "feel the burn"

i actually like the separate buttons for menuing in RPGs specifically, but for any action games it can be a real drag

>Was going to say say SNES, it's proportionally perfect, but now that I think about it it has caused pain after long sessions. I think the plastic might be slightly harder than is ideal.

Goin with this. Ain't the SNES - also snes input on the pad was kinda not great honestly.
An ideal D pad would have a soft later, rounded edges, good rotational pickup, ease of thumb rotation, short concise throws.

I don't know that I've ever used a single "amazing" dpad in the same way I have felt at least one amazing analog stick which was springy yet very little resistance so you could move it very gently and precisely without fighting it. Although with the joy-cons (despite the awful drifting, or the poor manufacturing quality, or the software handling bugs in games like Zelda) the low stature of the sticks and more ball of thumb position does allow a bit of precision and because it's low you can put your thumbs on the various sides and lever action it for very smooth fine movement. That help with the amount of resistance they do have - still those need less resistance.
Those aren't D-Pads though, but again, I've never run into D-Pads that made me go, holy shit that's an amazing d-pad. I've only ever used okay d-pads and trash d-pads. (Also fuck the dreamcast dpad it was a thumb killer)
