Why there is so much hate about water stages in Sonic games? Personally I find them a nice change from the fast action to slow one, struggling to get out of the water before the time runs out. This adds some nice suspense, expecially when you hear the "Running out of air" theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcDwfvi5-LE
And of course let's not forget how awesome is Hydrocity Zone theme.

i hate them because theyre a pain, i love them because theyre challenging. i mean if you're playing a good game of sonic youre going fast trying to be all slick like its just a breeze, the water levels are like NOPE, FUCK YOU HAHAHA SHOULDA WENT SLOWER. its great but annoying in a GOOD way, if nothing about a game is making you angry it's not good and is too easy....i stand by this.

>> No.1094418

Some of us rented or borrowed (myself included) the games and didn't know anything about the air bubbles. It probably doesn't help that Chemical Plant Zone is so early in Sonic. Fun Fact: Chemical Plant was planned as Death Egg Zone and as one of the final zones.

i can understand that, but personally i didnt have booklets for any of my genesis games as they were all handed down to me by people who threw them away. i mean ya kinda figure theres a way to survive when clearly an entire level was constructed down there....if you were supposed to just die in the water they wouldn'ta built a whole part of a stage complete with rings, enemies and power ups.

I'm glad they kept it early, I don't get why Chemical Plant is considered so hard, literally all you have to do is slow down and time your jumps. The only challenge is you have to leave the typical Sonic game mindset for a bit.

Plus it has the best song in the game. Well, that or Mystic Cave Zone.

you mean an easy game, if you were any good at the game you would easily avoid falling in the water. it's one thing to say it annoyed you but to complain you get punished in a game for playing badly is just asinine

I admire how you post asking what people disliked about the water stages in Sonic, then use an image blatantly highlighting the general problem with some of the longer stages.

Depending upon RNG for basic survival is frustrating.

Sanic 1 is poorly designed.

Sanic 2 was a bit better, but still had banal level design and was short.

That's mostly because you don't have to interact with it a whole lot.
Except for the start of the stage all the water zones are designed such that you're always going to enter them with enough momentum to either hydroplane over it or simply power on through it.

And you know what's worst than water levels in general? Land levels on water games like Ecco 2.

Labyrinth Zone gets so fucking FRUSTRATING mainly in the 3rd act where you have to beat or at least follow Robotnik through obstacles and the water is rising, eventually enveloping you making it hard as fuck to navigate that passage. I really don't remember hating it that much as a kid, but playing through the re-release lately I'm stuck on Robotnik and it makes me want to smash something.

Sonic 2 water stages were never a huge deal, nowhere near as maddening as Labyrinth.

Genocide just sounds like a really cool word to the Japanese, that's why you got that dude from One Punch Man and that doll from Super Mario RPG.

I mean, if you've ever watched an anime opening you should know how firm the Japanese grasp of the English language is.

That's why.

Though to be honest I never had a problem with them either. Outside of Labyrinth Zone and Tidal Tempest, the underwater sections are usually either optional or still fast-paced.

As a kid I always wanted a level that's basically 90% of water and you have to keep the speed to continue to run on it. Kinda like that one level in Unleashed.

But the water levels like the ones we got always frustrated me because of how slow and OPPOSITE they are of what I wanted them to be.

At least on the genesis games, the only ragetastic water levels As a child, remembering the first times playing were the Sonic 1 Labyrinth zone stages and Scrap Brain zone 3.
The rest of water levels on the Genesis era Sonic games had at least one path above water or you went through it too fast to even hear the drowning music.

Whatever pictures of a blazing city there may be are likely mockups made by someone on the internet. The name "Genocide City" was a prototype name chosen by a Japanese guy who didn't realize how dark of a word it actually is in English. He just wanted a cool, tough, and intimidating zone name. The name was eventually changed to "Cyber City," then the stage was made into the third act of Metropolis, and art assets made for Cyber City were taken by Sega Technical Institute and put in Sonic Spinball.

This article explains it fully:

>Fun Fact: Chemical Plant was planned as Death Egg Zone and as one of the final zones.

It was never considered that. They wanted a scary machine final level for which they reused Chemical Plant assets, but it never made it into a complete zone. They asked their translator to do a very scary title and that's how they ended up with Genocide City (which does sound kickass).
What they had complete of the zone eventually made it into Sonic Spinball as The Machine, along with some of the Hidden Palace designs in Toxic Caves.
Both Genocide City and Hidden Palace were designed by the americans in the team.

>the games and didn't know anything about the air bubbles.

The music changed to let you know. You let out air bubbles. There was a countdown. It's fucking water. YOU DROWNED.

You have to be fucking retarded to not understand what's going on and that you need to pick up air bubbles. You have to be fucking braindead to not understand the concept after the first time you die.

You do not need a manual to figure that shit out at all. It was fucking obvious. Zero excuse.
