This game should've gotten a US release. Yeah, it's kinda clunky, but it's very satisfying once you start making progress and getting good weapons and armor. Using health to repair gear is weird though

I've never played Abyss, but the life-as-currency system from the first game went a long way in fixing the busted economy from the King's Field games. Gold in those games virtually does not matter, whereas the Cune/HP economy in ST was really tight and gave the player meaningful decisions. All of this only worked because the item degradation was tuned extremely well, of course. It was a really smart choice imo.

I assume KF4 did poorly here. STA is honestly a lot more impressive to start with and lets you have a pistol right off the bat which I'm sure would make game journalist types a lot more forgiving in their reviews (based on the first 30 minutes of games before they drop it) than slowly bonking a venus fly trap and a giant roly-poly.

Just Sony of America arbitrarily vetoing good games while allowing actual garbage to be published on their system at the same time.

A publisher had already made the decision to risk publishing it. These sort of games are even more niche in Japan than the West anyway.

I would have liked it more if the guns didnt completely trivialize the combat.

I'm gonna play this someday, game runs like ass on any emulator i've tried though

Did FromSoft's old first person rpgs even do better in the west though?
>I'm gonna play this someday, game runs like ass on any emulator i've tried though
I ran it last year on a nightly build of PCSX2 on a very modest spec computer, full speed with no real issues.

From should have released it for XBOX/PC. Contrary to what people claim, games like this sold in the West. Like Morrowind anyone?

Armored Core had mainstream success, and KingsField had a strong cult following.

I've been playing all KF/ST in order and the first ST was great, I don't think any other can top KF3 and ST

Gaiden was a disappointment, the combat feels extremely loose, not satisfying at all, level design was subpar as well and the game was half the size of any other KF. The ending redeemed the game a little.

Currently playing KF4/The Ancient City and it's alright so far

This is every From game in the end, by the end of King's Field 1 (Japanese) you have a sword and spells which destroy everything, and in Armored Core you have the Karasawa. I love both games and their sequels, but I'm always playing games with the aim to have the latter half of the game challenge me further.

Yes but how well did their first person games like King's Field, Shadow Tower (original PS1), Eternal Ring etc. do compared to Japan? I don't think they did any better than in Japan. I think they're just very niche games, kind of like how Shiren the Wanderer and other fairly decently hardcore roguelike-style games made in Japan don't really do huge numbers anywhere.

KF4 > KF3 > ST Abyss > ST > Eternal Ring > KF1 > KF2

anf if you want to include the other retro Fromsoftware RPG's then:

Forever kingdom > Lost Kingdoms 2 > KF4 > Lost Kingdoms 1 > KF3 > Evergrace > ST Abyss > ST > Eternal Ring > Thousand Lands > KF1 > KF2
