Looking for old games that're like Dark Souls.

I already love Faxanadu, Castlevania and Zeruda. Other games pls.

Dark Souls is King's Field 6. King's Field 1-3 and Shadow Tower (all PS1) are retro. Those are literally the games formt he same series made by the same company.

Otherwise, Zelda freaking 2.

You should check out Zeliard. Very easy to emulate on dosbox.

It's a spinoff game, just like DaS. Plays almost exactly like King's Field.

Well, while we're on teh subject of From horror adventures, there's always Echo Night. It's sequel (PS2) isn't retro, but it's a very interesting sci-fi horror game set on a lunar station.

This game is insanely hard to beat without savescumming. I made it to that boss with the spiky shield that damages you when it blocks, but I had to stop.

Oh yes this, Deathtrap Dungeon is like playing old school D&D. It's based on a book from a CYOA series, and the later levels are brutal. Excellent game.

Wizards and Warriors is easy mode compared to it's sequel, Iron Sword.

Unlimited continues create no risk, especially when you spawn where you die.

I've been playing the translation of King's Field 1 (J) on my phone on and off and of course it's primitive. I wasn't aware of this Shadow Tower series so thanks for that. I'm watching a speed run of Shadow Tower now and it's significantly better than King's Field but still basically the same. Is Shadow Tower 2 truly a step between KF and Souls or is Souls really a huge leap forward? I wonder what inspired From to make such an awesome return to the genre.

Die by the Sword (be sure to also get the Limb from Limb add-on)

Severance: Blade of Darkness

Diablo 1 (not so much 2 which is kinda too fast and colorful aside from act 1)

>>1094102
If you're refering to the green puddles on the ground ...
I had the same problem.

It's kind of a baginners trap.
You have to face down really low.
You'll get used to it after a while.

>>1095076
Shadow Tower is kind of a more polished version of King's Field but with a different story.

As for Demon's / Dark Souls; It was intended as the PS3 King's Field but they decided to make it it's own franchise because they director didn't want to mess with the KF formula but do some things differently anyhow, like the 3rd person view, which isn't very King's Field-y as isn't the resurrection element.

This shit right here.

Good to see Severance and Die By The Sword were already posted. And a bit outside the boundaries but I maintain that anyone who likes Souls will fucking love Gothic 1&2. On a slightly lower tier we have Rune and Enclave.

I was reluctant to name them because they're a lot heavier on the roleplay part than the horror/combat one
but I guess they could fit.

Certainly has the dirty, sometimes creepy locations and the early heavy difficulty.

One of my favourite games ever.

I'm seeing Blade Of Darkness mentioned a lot in this thread. I bought it a while back, but I haven't gotten to it because I've been busy. I probably won't have time to play more than one game, but I got some free time coming up. Would you say Blade Of Darkness is worth top priority? I'm currently choosing between that or Little Big Adventure.

I think the Souls games have more of a lineage with Shadow Tower than King's Field.

I need to finish my playthrough of Shadow Tower, though. Thanks for reminding me. Excellent game, by the way, apart from the repair system.

Dark Souls isn't hard though. It's challenging, bleak and fair. Ys' aesthetic is nowhere near bleak enough to be considered similar.

I do love the Ys series though
