Not true.

Otacon didn't die in the ending where Meryl is saved because the base was never bombed.
Otacon ending makes Colonel Campbell reveal that Meryl is his daughter, but Meryl surviving doesn't suddenly make her *not* his daughter. It's likely that Campbell simply told Snake offscreen once the two of them split apart to do their own goals.
Snake only gets the infinite ammo bandana ("bandanna") from Meryl after saving her, and he has this bandana in MGS2.
Otacon made the stealth camouflage, he could easily have made another for Snake before MGS2. The stealth camo Otacon gives him in the Otacon ending does not have to be the same exact camo that Snake uses to board the Tanker.

It doesn't happen in any ending because Campbell gets the strike aborted and the Secretary of Defense arrested. People are confused (I think) because Otacon has an emotional goodbye codec call with Snake where he knows he will die if the base is bombed, and I don't think Snake calls him again once everything is over.

And in MGS2, Snake explains that after Shadow Moses, he went back to drinking himself into a stupor and would have stayed there had Otacon not invited him into Philanthropy. Meryl corroborates this in MGS4 by saying she tried and failed to get Snake to clean up his act and ultimately left him to rot.

is it the fact that johnny was a joke character for 2 (3 if you count his grandfather who dies in PO) the reason why you had people hate him in MGS4 or is it the fact that he got with meryl in the end?

i get that he's a goof but at the end of the day he was still a good enough soldier in his own right to not only get into special forces but also was able to coast with literal super soldiers and effectively survive shadow moses and big shell. i feel like that says something meanwhile snake was kinda resigned to die after everything with ocelot was settled.

I don’t hate him, but turning a joke character (particularly a character whose personality is entirely about having diarrhea of all fucking things) is a pretty polarizing idea. Eccentric for sure, but teetering too closely to just being fucking bizarre.

It’s too surreal to even phrase properly. Imagine telling people working on the game that Johnny the diarrhea guy was going to be an integral character this time around lmao. And not just that, he gets fucking married to one of the series’ heroines.

a self insert isn't always a mary sue anon. for example sailor moon the character is an author insert and she's portrayed as a ditzy & bratty crybaby for like most of the series who (along with the rest of the sailor scouts) was originally going to die a violent & brutal death because the author thought it was funny to have a story where all the main characters die in the end.
