do playing retro console games on handhelds ultimately devalue the intended experience of the game? Is it not better and more engrossing and impactful to play them on an actual big television screen?

Yes
And yes
I hated the GBA/** years because the only way we saw any decent 2D games was on shitty handhelds with some severe compromise or gimmick involved. At least nowadays you can play the games without huge compromises, but it’s still a small screen/cramped control layout/platform that requires headphones for decent audio.

Depends on the game. My first handheld was a game boy, my first game on it was Link's Awakening, also my first Zelda game. It seemed profound that such a huge world was in such a little device. The contrast stimulated my imagination. I don't think there's anything in that game that I would have perceived more deeply or more accurately if it was on a bigger screen. Perhaps you could say that ALttP or OoT better express some essential 'Zeldaness' better than LA does, but then it's just a different game anyway.

Simply playing it on a big screen isn't enough. To have really beaten the game, it must be all original hardware. The console, the game, the controller. the couch, the cheap consumer television. All of it. The walls better have authentic 80s wood paneling, too. Don't forget the halogen bulbs, none of that LED shit.

Yeah, that's an ancient photo because once I could emulate portable I sold it. Nomad was amazing when it was the only way to play Genesis on the go, but the screen sucks, ghosting is terrible and it eats batteries like candy so basically useless without a plug. Now I mostly use a PSP but the effect is the same, old games shrunk down look great to me.

I think games that were intended to be played on a handheld, should be played on a handheld. For console games you could kind of go either way, but yes the ideal would be playing them on a proper display with the original controller (or a USB/Bluetooth version of it).

Currently I only really play my Game Box Plus (Famiclone) handhelds since I don't have as much time to devote to gaming as before, but I do have bluetooth controllers for Genesis and Saturn if I want to sit down and enjoy some SEGA CD or something on my TV. But I probably won't be doing that for a while since I'm working on other projects atm.

Absolutely makes 0 fucking difference so long as you're comfy and immersed.

Threads like this make me think that the main reason people try to play the games "authentically" is to recreate an experience in childhood that they can no longer feasibly have. It makes 0 meaningful difference how the game is played as long as you play it from start to finish. Fucking imbecile OP with the bait posts.

The reason why Lynch opposes watching films on phones is because film, as a medium, is fundamentally about cinematography. At its inception, that was its distinguishing characteristic. It's very difficulty to appreciate cinematography on a screen of that size, just like it would be very difficult to appreciate music coming from a horrible speaker.

The distinguishing characteristic of video games is gameplay. So long as the device you are using does not meaningfully impede your ability to play the game, you are getting something reasonably approximating the intended experience. That's not to say that visuals, sound, and story don't matter when evaluating a video game. They just matter a lot less than the gameplay. The same way lyrics matter less than composition in music, and narrative matters less than lighting in film.

The only way to disrupt your ability to appreciate a game is radically alter the way meaning-containing sound and visuals are represented, or to cheat which, yes, includes the use of save states. Handhelds do neither of those things in of themselves, so they seem like a perfectly valid way to experience these games to me. I say this as someone who personally practices extremely rigid original hardware purism, mind you.

That's a reasonable conclusion if you work your way backwards from whats currently on offer. You could probably make equally embarrassing statements based on the state of modern games. Maybe it would be better to word it this way instead, then: film SHOULD be about cinematography, video games SHOULD be about gameplay, and so on.

Those two are reasonable. Did you really beat a game if you were told how to do it? I suppose it doesn’t apply for action/adventure games or such, but if you were told how to solve a dungeon then you didn’t beat the game. That’s like saying you solved a cross world puzzle after looking at the page that showed you where everything was.

If you’re playing Zelda: A Link to the Past but you have a guide open online and are just going where it tells you to go without figuring it out yourself then no, you did not beat the game. If you were given an equation to solve but the answer was on the back of the paper and you just read it and write down the number you saw on the back then no, you did not solve the equation.
