Alright. I love RPG's, but I just can't get into NES era RPG's. Dragon Warrior specifically.

Now, everything SNES/Genesis/Gameboy onward, I can handle no problem. But I'm trying to catch up. So far my favorite RPG of all time is Star Ocean 2. More so than any current gen RPG, more-so than any of the others I got ahold of recently. Pretending SO2 is the ONLY RPG I've ever played, what are some other RPG's I might enjoy?

(Also, I don't know if it's mechanics or aesthetics, but FF1/FF2 on PSP sat okay with me. I honestly think it was because of the improved mechanics, though. So if there are also remakes on older systems/current gen handhelds, I'm game.)

I don't like the Dragon Warrior series either, especially after they hired Akira Toriyama to do the character design.

Try Phantasy Star on the Master System. For a game released within weeks of Final Phantasy it's much more "modern" than it's contemporaries. I actually found it to be the only 8bit RPG I could play.

Ultima 4-6. Use xu4 and nuvie and get the fan patch for the DOS version of 5.

Play DQ3, if you can't get into that then there's probably no hope. It's a fantastic game.

He's literally always done the character art.

For every single game.

I know what you mean OP. I feel like the JRPG genre didn't really come into its own until the 16-bit era. NES era RPGs offer little in the way of story to keep you interested and the random encounter rates make them a chore to play at times.

>Genesis

What, besides the Phantasy Star games, good RPGs were released on the Genesis?

>> No.1090596

I was able to get through MOTHER but that's only because I played 2 and 3 first. Loved the series way too much back then. Didn't even realize how annoying the random encounters were.

All I can say is: Play Dragon Quest 3 with a really open mind. Don't assume you know anything. You might think it's the most vanilla game of all, but it isn't.

I don't like Dragon Quest III, but I have personally been enjoying Final Fantasy II, or at least as much as I can because I just want to play action games at the moment.

Shadowrun.

Dragon Warrior is shit apart from 3.

Play Pool of Radiance if you want a good NES RPG.

Also Sining Force CD, Lunar 1 and 2, Dark Wizard... Odd how the Sega CD had more RPGs than the main console.

Not quite like the Saturn though, where even the soccer manager was an RPG.
