Retro mindfuck moments:

X-Men for the Sega Genesis. Resetting the computer. My 12 year-old self didn't realize what in the hell to do until months later. It was neat, though.

I love games that do this

IIRC, there's a few Genesis games that have cheat codes activated by mashing the reset button over and over.

This part pissed me off so much. I kept thinking about pressing the reset button on the console but the thought of having to have to play the game all the way from the beginning again kept me from doing it. I did it for the hell of it one day and my mind was fucking blown.

I know this one's always brought up but it amazed me back in the day.

That and when you had to look at the back of the case. That one stumped me and my friends for a while back in the day.

I didn't have the case when I borrowed MGS from a friend of mine. Thankfully, the correct codec frequency wasn't that far up from the lowest one; I started calling all of them from the bottom.

Games back then were always doing innovative shit. I remember Startropics on the NES had this sheet of paper you had to dip in water to reveal a secret letter or something.

The 3rd (i think) Leisure Suit Larry game. The game had plenty of mindfucks. But the ending was a total mindfuck. What happens is that Larry uses a magic marker to escape lesbo cannibals, then he appears at a building and finds himself in a movie set, but when you get to the end you meet the game director, the place was a game studio and he realizes what larry has gone through so he decides to hire him to make Leisure Suit Larry 1.

I remember mine DIDN'T come with the fucking paper (game was english but packaging was localized)

I spent days replaying everything up to the sub, thinking I missed something. Since this was pre-internet I couldn't look it up either.
