Is there a trick to winning this minigame? No matter how hard I try to match it up, I hardly ever seem to win.

>> No.1089153

Each reel stops after a certain amount of spins. First two reels, stop it one before the star and one after (Or maybe I got that backwards). Third reel, stop it two spaces before the star (On the leaf). Practice with savestates, you should be able to get the first two no problem, third takes a bit of work.

>> No.1089152

You can try to time it, but always go for the mushroom since it's a more likely chance.

>> No.1089154

Each reel moves at a certain speed every time. I could never pinpoint exactly what to hit, but you should aim for the Mushroom because you'll have a double likelihood of winning. I remember I could get the Mushroom about a quarter of the time but almost never get the other two.

one before
one before
two before
but your timing has to be pretty precise. Somewhere in the second quarter of the character

|--|**|--|--| when that area passes the middle, according to the one, one, two pattern above.

>>1090160

EDIT: when that starred area is IN the middle of the screen.

If you don't hit the button before the center of the character passes the center of the screen, it will stop on the next character, instead.

Can't you just watch the scanlines in between the second and third rows?

SWEET MOTHER OF COW

This is my post that somehow I deleted. Sorry folks. Sage for unnecessary and unintentional bumps.

Okay... I just tried it. And this time it was

ON the one you want
ON the one you want
AFTER the one you want

I'm at a loss. When I emulate on Wii, its ON, ONE BEFORE, TWO BEFORE

Allstars is different, too.

>> No.1090260

Generally, I find if you press the a button as fast as you can, it lines up the flower most of the time

>> No.1090279

>>1090260
This. And also I used to eyeball it as a kid, 100% accuracy. When I play Mario 3 nowadays it's more like 25% so presumably it's a matter of practice.

>> No.1090624

Count to 5 and activate when the star passes the center.

>> No.1090654

Rhythm.

>> No.1090995

Damn this shit is hard. Was never able to master it. I usually just skip over the slots because I know I'll fail.

>> No.1091028

Here's what I do:

First row: try to match the mushroom perfectly in the center
Next two rows: Try to match the mushroom when 1/4th of it is it the center. That is, when the first quarter is there, press A

Seems to work almost every time

>> No.1091042

Also: isnt there a way to guarantee you get a star, at the end of a level? It seems to work, when your P meter is full and you hit the bottom left of the block. But is there anything more specific? Sometimes it doesnt work.

>> No.1091513

>>1091042
its like a 99% chance. When doing speedruns I manipulate it while running fast to get a mushroom or flower because i dont want three stars and watch the animation. Running full P seems to give it 99% of the time like I said, but if you turn at the last second before you jump then you will have an 80% chance to get one of the other two.

>> No.1091535

I have gotten a complete icon several times. It takes ridiculous timing.

you jump when you are left from
i think it might be 135 degrees
if you jump too early or too late, you dont get the star despite being at full P
pic related

>>1091596
Same here. When I played All Stars I got it lined up all the time, now I'm playing the Wii version and I'm lucky if I can get two rows to line up.

>> No.1092958

There IS a timing. It's the same timing for the first 2 lines, but for the 3rd one you have to click earlier.

I used to be able to pull it out EVERY SINGLE time as a kid, but with time I lost it. Also on emulation it's harder to pull out due to slight input delay.

I also used to know every "card returning mini game" table by heart. There is only 3 different oens. So, most of the times I could turn over every card the first time through, or if not, the 2nd time.

did you ever notice the last 3 items are always
mushroom flower star

>> No.1093181

wait there is more than 3? Odd, I could swear there was only 3. In any case I knew them by heart that's for sure.

No, but as a kid, I always noticed the stars are usually located in the corners.
>>1092958
This. Same thing with the coin minigame in SMB USA. Used to be able to get a least a 1up, everytime. Now I can't get it ever.
>>1091612
Do you ever wonder how as a little kid, you figured this shit out? Like how, in 1988 did I figure out if you jump on that last koopa on World 3-1 in SMB1, you can rack up unlimited lives?

So long as you're spriting full speed and your head hits the bottom left side of the block (not underneath, but the side, so it looks like mario is trying to clothesline himself on the block) you'll get it 100% of the time.
