Some have single player modes like survival, some have extra characters.

This might be a somewhat unpopular opinion (maybe not, given your observation), but there are a lot of shmups on the Saturn that are better than Silvergun. That's not to say that it's a bad game by any means, just that it has some really tough competition. I'd probably put the Psikyo ports and Garegga above it. Maybe even the janky DDP port as well, because it's just such a good game. There's many others as well, those are just the standouts for me personally.
