Trying to find a long lost game for my friend

A friend of mine is looking for a game from his childhood, and I've been scouring the internet to try and help.

Hopefully any of you can lend a hand.

DETAILS
- Red (Salmon-ish colored) Dragon boss that appears on the right side of the screen
- Game plays similar to Castlevania, as in, its a 2D platformer
- Has red eyeballs w/wings as monsters
- Has a ghost enemy in purple clothes that look like a robe
- Possibly on the SNES or PS1?

He said it isn't Little Samson, but that one he said is the closest to resembling the game he remembers. Since he said the art style was somewhat simplistic, so I'm thinking it might be a NES game.

At the time of playing it, according to him, he was around 6yrs old. So I don't know how reliable the memory is, but I'm doing my best to try and pinpoint it.

Sur De Wave (takeru) made Little Samson after Akira Kitamura left. Supposedly he said he had nothing to do with the game, but it's replite with tons of trademarks and references to Mega Man 2.

Kid Icarus fits a lot of the criteria. The red "dragon" boss makes me think of the final boss from Ninja Gaiden 2
