Yeah, I like this game.

I used to like this game as a kid. Went back and played through the whole thing and now I think it's too long for what it is. At some point they don't introduce any new elements and you're only spamming bros moves on everything which is lame. The overworld map is also needlessly annoying. There was a part where I needed to go back and upgrade my weapons and I had completely forgotten where the guys were at and nothing in the game reminded me.
It's incredibly charming, but the combat runs out of ideas and can't challenge the player in a satisfying way and is too focused on making you do Bros Moves to do any meaningful damage. Edit the game down by several hours and you've got a solid game.

Same.
However when I went back and replayed it, it was a lot shorter (and easier) than I remembered, but still drawn out. I'd probably gotten stuck when I was younger. I almost got stuck on the Yoshi theater bit.

I feel the exact same way. I love the humour, soundtrack, and the general gameplay but the length is unbearable. The encounters are far too frequent and long, and the boss battles go on f o r e v e r.
I've never been able to replay it to conclusion, I always end up dropping it

Cackletta's Soul is the most metal final boss in the Mario franchise and no one can convince me otherwise. It feels less like a battle to save the world and more like Mario and Luigi are fighting for their lives. The fact that it takes place in a hellish landscape, you start with 1 HP and she gets the first turn certainly helps.

Considering they ended up $4million in the hole making nothing but Mario games. If they didn't have such a big IP they probably wouldn't have bet the farm on it and have it blow up in their face.

I guess that might just come down to taste. I'm perfectly happy to do marathons of 50+/100+ hour RPGs back-to-back-to-back, so for me Superstar Saga is a short, fun palate cleanser.
>you're only spamming bros moves
>the boss battles go on f o r e v e r
When I play Mario and Luigi games, I generally only use Bros. Moves on boss fights. It makes the regular fights much more challenging and really rewards you for memorizing enemy tells.
Max-difficulty Bros. Moves absolutely shred bosses; they usually die in just a few turns.
I've also never felt that the encounters were too frequent or long; you can straight up avoid enemies on the world map if you don't want to fight them, and first striking an enemy basically cuts the length of the battle in half.
I think the rhythm of the battles is just about perfect, but then again maybe I've just played the game so many times that it feels totally natural to me.

It’s always bothered me that every time I load the save file after defeating the last boss that I’m back to where I started to fight the last boss

>> No.10854242

Agreed with the length of the game but i managed to beat most of it just fine using normal attacks, maybe because i went full glass cannon build with Mario and Luigi only extra upgrading attack.
Also a thing i like about Superstar Saga is how fast-paced it is, while in Partners in Time you need to go and come a lot to the present and read tutorial text for a lot of things everytime you beat a boss and go back.
Haven't played too much of Bowser Inside Story yet, couldn't run it into Desmume without crashing at the first boss fight and i have others things to play now
If you enjoyed SSS, BIS is a real treat. I don't know which is my favorite but they're both the best in the series imo. Single handedly changed my opinion of Bowser as a character in the franchise.
>> No.10854726

>>10850545
Wrong opinion. It is not canon to the true Mario series (Bros., Kong,1, 2, 3, and World ONLY!)

The game definitely begins to slow down during the second half with stuff like the Beanstar fragments and Joke's End but picks right back up at the end. It was a little too drawn out but even that second half has a ton of great bits.

You're not entirely wrong about the Bros. Moves but there is at least an execution barrier there. Unfortunately they went all in on them for the sequel and we would up with bosses that have thousands of HP because theoretically Copy Flower uses could do that much.

I don't think you need to be constantly innovating, and they DID try to keep giving you new abilities to keep things fresh. You get the fire and thunder hands rather late for example and are intended to be brewing new types of coffee throughout to give you interesting badges.

>>10851782
The boss battles in M&L are snappy as fuck, what are you on about? Even the final boss can be taken out in a matter of turns. As far as JRPGs go you can choose all of your encounters on the overworld and they're both more interactive and snappier than in almost any game you could compare to. The fact of the matter is that you lack an attention span.

I wanted to like this game, the gameplay is OK but god damn I could not possibly give a fuck less about stupid ass bean people. they dont even fit in the mario universe its shit. I want shyguys and goombas it may be done to death but give me an interesting new story, not these shitty OC donut steal characters I hate it and I really tried my best to get through it. Nintendo forced AlphaDream into a losing business strategy to push it out of business so they could take over the development of the Mario & Luigi franchise as part of their apparent plan to revive RPG Mario games. They even included M&L related questions on their recent survey.
