I am doing exactly that, just cleared out the first two chapters and am gonna do the rest after a good night's sleep. I miss SA's AK but this is still an absolute blast of a playthrough. HDN's increase in firepower and SA's enemies being way more lethal are like bread and butter. I'm really glad the comp patch exists because those two were unintentionally made for together.

Continuing the conversation about Marathon's anniversary from last thread, one of my pie-in-the-sky hopes is that someone manages to dig up unused/developmental assets and release them online, much like how John Romero did for DOOM a few years back.

There were a couple enemies that had gotten cut (pic related) and there were WAY more BoB lines recorded then what ended up in the games, among other things. Having this stuff released online would be useful for mod makers.

I generally prefer freelook for first person shooters, and that's what I use in GzDoom, but I'm also completely at peace with Doom's horizontally fixed turning with vertical auto aim, and I can play that with ease. Picked up Doom 64 on PS4 and it felt entirely natural after adjusting the controls (and turning off the blur).

The old DOS .exe? Maybe, but you could just as well get just get Raze or something and drop in Duke and the expansions.

IMO, half of the Sunstorm expansions are good, as in Nuclear Winter is goddamn terrible, Duke It Out In D.C is anywhere between 50% to 80% good depending on who you ask, and Life's A Beach is an absolute gemstone.
The new episode in the 20th Anniversary Edition is kinda good, some of the maps are a bit meh, but a bunch of them are some of the best official maps for Duke ever made.

Nah. In BYOC it's fine because it was always a tonal clusterfuck from day one. Though everyone involved has been doing a mostly good job of keeping characters reasonably powerful.
When people starting stacking more shit on Samsara, it suffered because the people adding shit were complete fucking idiots and halfassed their efforts, and there seemed to be no communication or quality control at play.

>No. It's intentional that the tomes are instantly picked up. Doing so would destroy the gameplay loop because people would find a tome they like and then never switch. Constantly switching tomes and being in situations where you have no choice but to switch tomes is a huge part of mod.
Then how about giving each tome a limited resource that is used up every time you use altfire, and also a dedicated button to "purge" or use an ultimate attack based on how much tome resource is left, in order to pick up a different tome? (also Miser tome should be a default infinite-resource starting tome that gets replaced by whatever limited-resource tome you get)

I totally agree. Samsara didn't need anything else. If memory serves right, this all started when a bunch of idiots came together and effectively badgered Term to make them an extra Samsara class, then they just kinda ran with it and more idiots joined in and turned into a fucking abomination.

Finished UV Maxing Stardate 20x7. I'm not a crazy expert player but it's nice to finally finish up beating the entire wad after the mental torture Map 05 was.

Playing through everything for Unreal 1 labelled Map Pack on UnrealArchive, in alphabetical order. Currently I'm up to Redeem Your Space.
So far the ones I'd say are worth playing are:
13 Mutants: Reasonably amateurish, but fun nonetheless. Nice use of MP bots as human enemies in the first map.
Dead Star: Well-made, but the author is not kidding when he says it's hard.
One Day in the Life Of...: OD6 is broken because the author forgot to put a PlayerStart in, but with a 10-second fix to add one it's a nice pack.
Redeem Your Space: I'm only partway through this because it's huge, but it's been good fun so far. Only issues I've spotted are janky English (pretty sure the author is some sort of Slav) and the Quad Shotgun is weirdly tiny because it doesn't scale for whatever reason.

Everything else I've played in the category is somewhere between meh and complete dogshit, or outright broken because the author forgot to include a critical file. Even including Triamid Ruins, which is very pretty but not actually that fun to play.
Common issues I'm noticing are ammo starvation beyond reasonable levels, fuck-all lighting so you have to use the Dispersion Pistol as a flashlight, and retreading the main game's campaign.

Not only is Otex a good texture pack, it is the only one of significant value ever created for doom. This is because it’s the only pack with a professional quality, comprehensiveness and originality sufficient to furnish one or several games on its own. Unlike Otex, the vast majority of other packs are made of simple edits of existing textures. The reason people do this instead of making them from scratch is because it's easier, not because it reliably makes for a better product. Editing existing textures often leaves ugly artifacts from chopping them up, colorizing them or lazily converting them to the Doom palette. It also frequently creates situations where the theme or the construction of the textures are visibly irrelevant to doom. In extreme cases, this results in something like: A texture from Quake that's stylistically unlike all those in Doom, with palettizing artifacts, irreverently scaled to be taller than it was meant to be on a wall, when it was designed for a floor... or something like that. Many mappers actually enjoy the task of creating visually consistent and attractive maps despite these inconsistencies, and sometimes with great success, but this behavior was still majorly born from a lack of original textures. Those successes are more a testament to the skills of the mappers overcoming limitations than to the quality of the textures.
The impressiveness of Otex is frequently overlooked by people with little interest in the art of 8-bit textures and by those who haven’t really considered it in the perspective of other sets. This impression is unfortunately compounded by the tendency for unskilled mappers to use it as an ineffective compensation for their own low visual chops. To elaborate: Otex has 2624 textures and 1309 flats compared to 286 and 106 in Doom or 1157 and 405 in CC4-tex. (1/3)

The majority of textures in Otex are also wide enough to fit multiple similarly themed textures from those examples within them, while being completely from scratch, better organized and more consciously constructed to accommodate the doom engine’s particular quirks. Things like orthogonality, divisions by powers of 2 map units, and flat/texture compatibility. The visual fidelity of those textures is another clear winning point, but it’s difficult to convey that in writing. Please consider again the attached images.
This should come as no surprise, Ola Björling has been working on Otex for decades. He’s been making Doom textures since his contributions to Mordeth in ‘97 or The Darkening and GothicDM in ‘98. He also naturally benefits from better image editing and digital photography technology compared to then. However, his works are not so modern in design that they were created using texture generating tools like Substance Designer. This gives them a distinct appearance with more pronounced shading and colors compared to the clean, slightly flat, monochromatic, modern looking textures like those in Makkon for Quake. This appearance is more suitable for the Doom engine specifically on account of its comparatively limited lighting capabilities. Effectively, baking more lighting detail into the textures that the engine can’t provide. This particular method of creation is ultimately liable to become a sort of lost artform as people move away from generic image editors to more dedicated tools for high quality texture work. Though I won’t say certainly one could never achieve the same effects with modern stuff.
The only remotely comparable doom texture resource would be from BTSX, but more so in terms of variety than quality. BTSX textures are numerous, but they don’t look as good as OTEX, especially beyond the techbase theme. Never mind how they’re currently unavailable for public use. (2/3)

Retail always had it at 25. The amount you get back is based on the health of the enemy, mine went up to 75 after that webm so it's not always back to full (before it starts ticking down).
Health stations are usually at 70% before you use them and the levels are flooded like crazy with health and ammo drops on vanilla.

Heretic, for the first time. It finally "clicked" with me.
E1 was fucking awesome (except M8), but E2 ice rink boogaloo made me drop this shit. It was like playing Sandy's D2 levels after his D1 levels, almost physically repulsive.
Picked it up after a break, finished E2 (still shit), but E3 got fun enough, and E4 is really damn nice so far, it got harder but in an enjoyable way.

Everything feels really weird in Heretic. The damage RNG range is fucking batshit crazy. The ammo balance is all over the place, and random drops make it even more fucked. Tome turns most of the weapons into AoE weapons, yet 99% of the times you just want a high single target damage, and there's none.
Crossbow is nice in both modes, because it's exactly like that, a huge single target damage. Raven just copied SSG and called it a day, and it just werks.
Not sure which one is my favorite enemy either, mostly because they're used strangely, like 3/4 of the times it feels like you're just grinding through the wall of meat, like half the times you don't have any space to make the encounter interesting, and for some reason the game doesn't like to mix enemies, so you have bunch of bats here, bunch of golems over there, a dozen claws in this room, 5 disciples in that room.
Yet the game is still fun somehow.

It's definitely a bit different from the vanilla Malice experience, but should be smoother around the edges... any bugs I've introduced aside, since this is very much a public test release.
I'm working on a hotfix right now for an issue I just found with the first of the secret levels, but it's generally recommended to avoid them if you're not a fan of extremely obtuse level design. The game makes it obvious when you come across them.

I think the reasoning is about intent. If you can assume the person making it is doing so for sexual gratification it's akin to them publicly exposing themselves. Making you unwittingly part of their fetish.
Not that I wholly agree with that, just that I think it's the reasoning. One issue that bothered me personally was when people jumped down BoA devs about Elsa's death, which was a direct reference to a soft core Nazi exploitation film from the 70s. They didn't know what they were talking about and made the wrong assumption.
Though I do think the assumption is right *sometimes*, getting uppity about it makes you look like an ass.

BTSX's E1 textures alone are phenomenal and easily good for a serious commercial game (E2 is fantastic itself in that department), and looking back at The Darkening, much of that is original work which has a consistent visual theme fairly distinct from Doom's own, but which otherwise fits the original graphic style.

GothicDM owes a lot of its textures to Quake 1, just adapted for Doom's palette, and this works out well as it's by the same artists originally and made for the same scales.
NME Corp 1 & 2 isn't 100% as finely put together in all areas as OTex, GothicTX, or The Darkening, but it's a very good texture set which I think could be used for a good commercial game, and Cage is one of the people I think has a good shot at matching Björling.

OTex is a very high quality resource, and I jive with your passion for it to an extent, but I don't think it's the only one, and much of its quality is owed to Björling having made many quality resources before, such as those previously mentioned. This is a guy who was already one of THE premier texture dudes for Doom two decades ago.
I also think you're vastly exaggerating the imperfections of some texture sets with you bringing up palette conversions, I would argue that most of GothicTX does an extremely good job adapting textures from Quake, Heretic, and Hexen, to Doom's palette.

It should be an overall much less janky experience than vanilla Malice, but you'll be a bit of a guinea pig since there's likely still issues to weed out.
The answer to your question also depends on how much you care about authenticity I suppose. While I've tried to keep gameplay changes respectful to the original, the differences are pretty noticeable. Of course, you can check the changelog under the first file to determine that, or just try both.

They’re both humbled by the explosive weapons in their respective games. Doom’s SSG deals roughly as much as a rocket but has roughly half the firing speed of the launcher.
Quake’s fires almost as fast as the grenade launcher but deals roughly half the damage of an explosive hit.
As always, Quake shotgun firerates play weird tricks on perception.

I've been using Scythe as kind of a way to track my advancement in skill as a newbie Doom player. The first time I played through it it took me at least a week or so playing on HMP (and in fact I think I didn't finish the last stage). Each time I've revisited it, I've gone a little further in comfort. Today I managed to get to map 22 on UV without much struggle, but this one's tough, so I may play a different wad and come back to it again later.

The impression I'm getting is that you're using the shareware demo .wad of Doom 1, and that GzDoom is just showing you the original shareware "ENDOOM" screen it comes with.

Now, GzDoom MIGHT have some special thing where it will then also tell you that you can buy the full .wad on Steam or something, but I have never tried using the shareware demo with GzDoom so I would never have seen it.

figuring out a good input method for this goddamn weapon has been giving me hell. But I'll be going forward with this current method and putting it through its paces.

So similar to the pistol and kick, when you first click you ready the weapon, and upon letting go you'll launch an attack. If you keep holding it and got enough heat for a charge attack, you'll start charging up. Having immediate visual feedback on how that charge is coming along helps.

Compared to soundfonts, it's a little bit more cpu intensive, but I haven't found any noticable performance differences. Presumably holds bigger authenticity credit, even over the official scva.
