The issue isn't playing PSX titles on a handheld but playing PSX titles exclusively with the RG35XX's d-pad. Most people experience the false diagonals when playing 2D titles that require them, like Street Fighter, Castlevania, and Metal Slug, but playing 3D titles with a shit d-pad is just going to be a shit experience.

I forced myself to be ambi with M&KB for aiming and it's not just a case of switching left/right click. Your brain has to deal with the total reversal of actions, UI & UX can also play a bit of a role when you look at the way menus are aligned.
A common way to align a mouse is to place it on the outside and drag inwards toward a keyboard but the arrow is reversed and it can fuck with you and so some people use flipped cursors.

I adore the idea of micro/nano handhelds so god damn much, but there are too many details with the GBAmicro that just makes it unappealing to me specifically. The glossy DSlite/DSi plastic, the screen being so teensy, the Start and Select button placement, and the one time I did actually hold and play one it felt like a more slippery version of the basic bitch US NES controller. So many aspects of gaming cross the arbitrary "consoles no later than 2001, games no later than 2007" barrier. Modern ports/re-releases of old games with significant changes, game series that span several years (I'm allowed to talk about Yakuza 1 and 2, but not 3 onwards) or were released on older and newer platforms at the same time (Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue and Red came out the exact same day, but only Red is /vr/ compliant). It also leads to scenarios where some of the allowed games are significantly older than not allowed games (God of War II (2007) is retro enough for /vr/ but New Super Mario Bros (2004) is not)

It would have made more sense to have one board for everything that's current-gen and another board for everything that's not instead of trying to just make up arbitrary lines for "so retro" oldfags

To be fair, for a long time we did, and we didn't even question it. N64 games were considered retro in the Wii's lifetime, PS1 was considered retro in PS3's lifetime.

I don't personally mind letterboxing that much or even "wasted space" as people call it, a screen at the right res would allow the handheld design a little more room to breathe not to worry, they'd still fuck up the other ergos.

Technically the PS3 super slim, a battery backpack and a small 20" TV balanced on top in your left arm with a split controller on the back (toasty) for the dpad and the right hand free for face buttons is a handheld and plays retro games.

It's close. The AMOLED doesn't seem like it shows up in the pics very well. I think it's slightly better, definitely better in person, but not monumentally so. I think it does get brighter on max brightness. If you were modding an original I'd take the AMOLED kit every time though because it has touch screen controls, vs the weird touch points you get with certain screen kits. The FPGBC has some QoL improvements that help even the score though.

I think someday I might buy a handheld; if I did it'd probably be the RP4 or one of them aluminum/metal shell anbernik products. Or maybe something small like a miyoo; but that urge has never overpowered me. My gaming handheld needs have been meet and I'm satisfied enough that I hardly post on here anymore.

I had an issue with a high pitched sound that would come thru the speaker or headphones regardless of volume level.

Support gave me a firmware update that fixed it, and it seems to have been fixed officially on the 1.08 firmware update.

I have no actual complaints and have not run into any other issues yet. It's pretty good and much cheaper than trying to mod an original. You can see my pic for a general screen comparison.

I bought the kit two weeksish ago and assembled it earlier in the week. Got the v1.11 variant of the board. The worst part of assembling the kit is simply having to thread the screws on the shell itself because they don't come prethreaded. Honestly took me like 20 minutes of just screwing them in as hard as I could and then backing them out and the middle-right screw is acting up on me by being firm but not coming out now.

When turning it on it functions exactly like any other legit GBC. With the newer firmwares they made their own OC boot logo so you need to get the modified one from

The volume slider is now this rocker thing you can push in to get to the OSD menu. It is much MUCH worse for turning sound down and you can't get it as low as the original GBC at all. It's always at like middle level on a real GBC even if you're one tick away from being mute.
If you play a GB or GBC game on the GBC core the graphics sometimes break. This is not handled automatically by the FPGBC yourself and you need to open up the OSD to tick "GBC fix" which fixes it. I think they said they're working to make this automatic.
The CPU speed is ever so slightly higher than a real GBC when you get it in the sweet spot which is like 3-4 ticks lower than max (It defaults to this on 1.08). I believe they're also working to fix this.
Real cartridges all seem to work based on the ones I own with no issues at all outside of the GBC fix thing.

Flashcarts are a mess in terms of compatibility.
Everdrives are officially supported now and work like they do on a real GBC. This should mean the clones on AliExpress (The Game Boy GB Pro+/Game Color ones) work as well.
EZ Flash JR requires the 1.5e patch (You need to Google it) and like 70% of games don't work. Some work by setting the CPU speed lower but crash when you put them back.

Ran out of room, but I should add I also have the speaker issue even at 1.08. Even if you have the thing at the lowest volume you will hear noise coming out of the speaker. Sometimes it stops, sometimes it doesn't. It's almost imperceivable unless the room is completely dead silent or you have the speakers up to your ears and I've never heard it at all when other noise is happening in any way.

I also don't know if it's the buttons I got or I'm remembering my years of growing up with the GBC wrong, but diagonals, especially down-right and up-right seem to get noticed way more than down-left and up-left. Left is properly rigid while right is ever so slightly dipped. Maybe the silicone contacts aren't on as great?

The only thing you should know is that it doesn't have IR function. It looks like there's spots on the board where you could solder IR LEDs but the spot isn't populated.

I will note support was pretty good and it sounded like if they couldn't get it fixed they'd replace the board.
