I honestly don't bother using the Sega CD itself. I have one that's broken, got it for free. I think it needs a new lens and probably new capacitors, but I don't have time to go through the trouble of fixing it (or trying to, not sure if its salvagable), and I hear loading times on the Sega CD are horrible... so I just use emulators with TV output and a USB pad. It's mostly the same thing, I even use the actual Sega CD games on my PC's cd-drive for more "autentic" experience... it's all a lie though, the good thing is that Sega CD emulation is good, as is Genesis. Kega Fusion must be my favorite emulator overall.

And honestly, in number of games still worth playing, SCD is fine. Combine with the truly bizarre shit on the console that's interesting just because it exists, there's nothing wrong with it. Plus, it requires a Genesis anyway, so you can just play Genesis games on it.

Bionic Commando. The game's plot involves a Neo-Nazi government reviving Hitler. At the end you make Hitler's head explode with a rocket to the face. I'm not exagerating anything, you fire a rocket right into his cockpit and hit Hitler square in the head making him explode. Extreme gore for an NES game.

>> No.1089028

>>1083806

Actually an underrated system.

Reason it wasn't more successful was because of high price tag ($299.99 US), not too mention it had to face competition from the SNES.

People like to blame its failure on the library of full motion video games, and while that was definitely a factor, it wasn't "the" factor.

Break out any old Gamepro, EGM, etc, and funny enough, many of those FMV games got good ratings. PC gaming in those days had a lot FMV games, as well.

It was the "hot new tech" of the early 90's and Sega gambled on it (as did 3DO and many PC game publishers, like Sierra).

Can't really blame them. At that time, FMV did seem to be "the future."

>> No.1089059

Looking at the movie-games of today and how often games take control away from you for "cinematic" scenes, and the prevalence of set pieces, it looks like they weren't exactly wrong.

>> No.1089075

>>1089059

Lol.

I joke about that myself.

Seems the industry has always had a stick up its ass about creating "cinematic experiences."

I also find it funny when people praise games like Heavy Rain, but shit on those old FMV games, as if they're that much different.

>> No.1089090

>>1089075
Because there's an illusion of interactivity to them, I think.

Then you get people praising Metal Gear Solid games with hour long cutscenes, and will hate on the Sega CD because as if every frame on the disc even came close to that long.

It's funny though, that everyone mocked the Sega CD, then only a few years later praising FF7 for nothing else but its cut scenes.

I think Sega always knew which way the wind was blowing, they just were really bad at getting there.

That's because Sony finally allowed developers to make movies with their super cheap and mega storage disks than those meanies at Nintendo who wanted GAMES! HAHAHA, they thought people wanted GAMES?

>> No.1111207

>>1111194
By all means, hate on developers like Squeenix who have it coming, but I don't understand the hate for technology, it seems a bit luddite. You haven't forgotten that PCs and the music industry also benefitted from CDs, right?

I don't know about you, but I found one CD a lot less aggravating than eight 3.5" floppy diskettes for games. (and yes, FF7 and FF8 had just as many CDs, which only proves that it's a problem with the developers and not the storage medium)

>> No.1111238

>>1111207
It wasn't the technology, they were just enablers in a trend that eventually rotted away the core concept of video games. Nintendo always was, and always will be, about games, not interactive movies.

In Wolf3D, you plain shoot at Hitler until his mech-armor breaks, then he breaks free with a pair of gatling machineguns, at which point you have to gun him down before he guns you down.

His death animation in Wolf3D has him bleeding from all sorts of wounds, his body ripping open and shit, and I think you can even spot his testicles dropping out on the ground in a pool of blood.

I personally think it's about as good as Ripper, except without the charm and the Christopher Walken. So I guess nothing like Ripper, but still.

Heavy Rain was like a fucking forlift simulator when it came to controls by the way, not that every FMV game was exactly stellar in the day.

That's all for now. Still need to go back to Mio's route and get some medal/coin to finish it, still not sure where to get it.
These new posting times are fucking bonkers by the way, makes it terrible to image dump, specially since I can't even cache the captchas because they become invalid in like two minutes.

Should I just create a YU-NO thread?
I don't want to seem like I'm shitting up the thread?

Create it. I was thinking about making just today, actually. Such an underrated game that seems to be properly appreciated by /vr/. The perfect mix of VN storytelling and adventure gaem interactivity.
