What does /vr/ think of flash cards for retro consoles?

I just ordered a SD2SNES, & I'm wondering if I should buy a mega everdrive too while I'm at it.

>> No.1082646

So no opinion? I've been emulating on my wii and wanted a more authentic experience.

>> No.1082645

Why didn't you get a Everdrive for SNES?

>> No.1082648

>>1082645

SD2SNES can do more, can't it? IT has MSU1 support & theoretical FX chip support in the future (it can already do custom chips like the ones in mega man x2 & x3)

>> No.1082719

Does anyone here own a flash cart for any retro system? What are your experiences with it?

>> No.1082972

Do people really not like flashcards? I know they're expensive, but damn, finding out nobody here has one is a real eye opener.

>> No.1082976

The only major thing holding me back is incompatibility with certain games

I'm waiting for full FXchip support before dropping dosh on a snes card

>> No.1083074

I'm gonna get one cos the prices for SNES games are ridiculous right now, and I can't be fucked to rebuild the collection I sold a few years ago

I think they're good for studying. I prefer to use my computer though. It always takes me too long to write everything out.

>> No.1083101

>>1082972

They're expensive as shit. If they cost as much as an R4 (maybe a little more) you can bet your ass I'd have one.

ESPECIALLY for the N64.

When you consider how much money you save by putting all the games on it, it's not that expensive

I have the N8
It works great. Every game I have tried works. Built in game genie can be turned on or off.

Works with FDS games as well and uses auto disk flipping.

You have to make sure you use roms with good dumps (!). I had a few megaman games which needed replacing.

Can organize roms into folders with a 250 something limit on roms per folder. Game names shown on screen can have many characters, None of my games are cut off, I also took the time to rename my roms so that there were no (U) (!) at the ends.

You can also toggle if you want the system to reset to the N8 menu or to the game you are playing when pressing the reset button.

You can also boot to the last game you played from he menu by pressing.. start.. I forget, I usually just navigate there.

It saves to SD card. There is no need to reset after a save EXCEPT when saving FDS games. FDS games require a reset after save.

forgot to mention, also works great with J translated games and hacks like FF7 and what ever else.

I got the everdrive 64. It is fucking amazing.

>> No.1083265

Flash carts cost considerably less than even a moderately expensive chase game for any particular system.

On my phone, so I won't type much but I have a mega everdrive and its great.

Oh and for the people complaining about price, bear in mind that r4 cards are mass produced and also use cheaper parts to begin with.

hey if you're renaming roms bro, download a free filename utility called d-fileMU. it uses checkboxes of rules to determine what to remove or add to a batch of filenames. Saved myself a fuckload of time. I also use it to rename scene-ripped mp3 albums to get all the underscores and tags off the filenames.

I use a program called "fezzik" which lets me edit the names of all the files in a directory as a textfile, which I can edit in a program that supports find and replace, regular expressions, etc., and when I save the changes to the file, all the files in the directory have their names changed to match the changes I made. The ability to use regular expressions by opening the textfile in notepad++ or whatever is very convenient, because it lets me handle even complex patterns that aren't always predictable. You could very easily use it to remove all the (!) and [U], [J], etc. from a list of files, even if there were unexpected patterns like [W].

Just picked up a basic Everdrive for my SNES. What with all the fan translations and overpriced common carts I feel like it's worth it. Ironically I enjoy the Genesis library more, but it seemed to make more sense to pick up the SNES flashcart first.

It's expensive when you're poor and live in a tiny apartment without much storage space.

Like me.

I just got an N8 and it is a great investment. Highly recommend it. Nothing like playing Ducktales 2 on your couch instead of hunched over a laptop. Anyone else make their own labels? I'd love to see how creative /vr/ is.

Dude thanks for this, it worked like a charm and really helped cut the clutter!

If you don't mind shipping times just get one from shop.retrogate.com

It tends to be cheaper and they're usually in stock.

I did this for EMS cart after putting it in a standard shell. I'd say it turned out pretty fucking good.

>> No.1085324

>>1083553
I was thinking the same thing when I first got my N8, the idea wore off quick. Assuming your using model 1 NES, chances are you will leave the cart in and never see the label to begin with. Save yourself some time and money on this.

But if you really want to go full retard art on your cart then go for it. I would also recommend buying a see through color shell as well. RetroZone sells them for $5 each.

>> No.1085779

Just did a group buy with the lads from Retro gamer, Jamma+ and Amibay on the TurboGrafx ones, got them for $60 each as 10+ discount.

But yeah Everdrives are awesome things

>> No.1085793

My N8 is in a Bayou Billy shell with the name crossed out and "Everdrive N8" written on.
You do need a shell for it in the normal NES as pressing it down and removing with out feels wrong

My N8 is in a reproduction case. Had to carve out a slot for the memory card with a knife, as my dremel tool's battery fucked off and no longer holds a charge, and buying a new tool (as the old battery is out of production) would be more than I can afford due to recent events, BUT WHATEVER.

>> No.1087860

I thought the SD2snes was backlogged for like 8 months and was 200$? I want one so bad but I got turned off when it would take that long, just in case my money got tied up and somehow he went out of business and I never got it. Correct me if I'm wrong and I will go buy one right now.

Apparently there was something holding up production (not sure, read it awhile ago) but retrogate has them in stock.
